If you can't make that jump to a Windows machine, you should also consider last year's MacBook Pro. While the specs are 2015 (which in computer years is old), a top-of-the-line model costs $2,899 and comes with a 2.8GHz quad-core Intel i7 processor, 16GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and all the ports you're used to (USB-3, SD card reader and Thunderbolt 2).Wireless charging company WiTricity may not be a household name, but that could change once Dell laptops start launching with its technology.Dell laptops that started charging wirelessly the moment they were placed on a charging mat made an appearance at WiTricity's show suite at Computex 2016 here in Taipei. WiTricity declined to comment on when these Dell laptops will be available.Unlike other current wireless charging standards, such as Qi which requires you to accurately place charging coils on top of another, WiTricity's tech generates a very safe magnetic field (using a smartphone is supposedly 100 times more dangerous) that transmits the electricity wirelessly.
In the case of the above mentioned Dell laptops, WiTricity says about 30W of power were being transmitted to the laptops, allowing you to quickly charge the battery.WiTricity CEO Alex Gruzen told CNET the company's tech allows it to accurately shape the magnetic field, which is capable of going through materials such as wood or marble, allowing its wireless charging technology to be used in kitchen table tops and letting more than one device to be charged at a time.Another use of WiTricity can be found in the military. Batteries that used to be on soldier's helmets for night vision goggles have been removed and WiTricity tech in backpacks are used to power the helmets wirelessly. The backpacks' batteries are then charged when soldiers sit in down in a Humvee while being transported. This sounds pretty cool, and similar commercial applications of the tech could be forthcoming too. Unless battery technology improves in the near future, WiTricity's wireless charging could be the new normal to easily top up your devices without having to bother about wires each time.
What do you really need from a computer processor? AMD is thinking you want to "work faster, play longer" with its newest range of processors.AMD has launched its 7th Generation A-Series APUs at Computex in Taiwan, claiming that it's gaining ground on rival Intel, and that this year it is delivering a lot more power at lower price points. For those out of the loop, 'APU' is AMD's name for its processors, starting five years ago. These 'Advanced Processor Units' aim to combine genuine graphics processing right alongside the traditional CPU to deliver best possible performance on a single chip.AMD is particularly pleased with its lower-end chip improvements (its A9, A6 and E2 series), delivering a 52% improvement in CPU performance over the past generation. This is thanks to introducing its higher-end CPU designs into the lower-end models this time around.According to AMD, its previous generation of processors offered certain performance levels at a lower price, while this year they will offer a lot more performance at the same price. At the higher end of the range (FX, A12 and A10 series) there's plenty of improvement too and some genuine competition for Intel. AMD says they're delivering 56% higher CPU performance since 2014, and on graphics performance claiming 53% better performance than Intel's current Core i7 line.

One of the big claims for this generation of processors is its efficiency when watching videos. AMD's Kevin Lensing, Corporate Vice President and General Manager, Client Business Unit, said the new processors see up to a 41% reduction in energy use during local 1080p video playback over the previous generation. Compared to a three year old system, that improvement is a massive one-third of the power consumption.Pointing to HD video being 70% of all internet traffic by 2019, AMD is building out deeper video playback support. The 7th Generation APUs feature hardware support for HDMI 2.0, UHD H.264, 4K H.265/HEVC, and 1080p VP9. That's essentially all the key flavours of video encoding people will bump into online, and this hardware all plays a role in reducing energy needs so battery life lasts longer while watching video. While the wider industry is spending more time talking about processing beyond the PC, Lensing affirmed AMD's focus on the desktop and notebook market."We're extremely focused on the PC," says Lensing. "We're not interested in drones and we're not pushing hard on auto. We're really big on PC."
If Apple had introduced a new MacBook Air last week, the company wouldn't be facing down a mob of angry creative professionals. It might not have Apple software developers questioning whether the company has lost its way.Because the new MacBook Pro basically is a MacBook Air -- the most impressive Air ever made.Let's rewind time for a moment. It's Thursday, October 27, and Apple's event is under way.Imagine that instead of introducing the new MacBook Pro, Apple unveiled a new MacBook Air. One that's 12 percent lighter, 13 percent smaller by volume and practically the same weight -- but manages to cram in a faster Intel processor, faster graphics, plus the far sharper, brighter and more colorful Retina Display the MacBook Air so desperately needed.Sure, it starts at $1,500 rather than $1,000, but you get twice the solid-state storage for the price -- and you can double the RAM, quadruple the storage and get the awesome new Touch Bar secondary screen with Touch ID fingerprint sensor if you're willing to pay even more.
How long has your MacBook Air had a 1.6GHz processor? This new one is 2.0GHz or 2.9GHz; there's even a 3.3GHz option. And sure, it's got a thinner keyboard and only two (or four) general-purpose Thunderbolt 3 ports instead of handy full-size USB ports and SD card slots. But we, Apple, figured you'd rather have a more accurate keyboard and amazing single-cable Thunderbolt 3 docking options to go with your mobile MacBook Air lifestyle. Now, you can pull your MacBook Air right out of your manila envelope and plug in a single cable to charge it, dock with your peripherals and power multiple monitors all at the same time.Oh, and one more thing: we knew you'd like the MacBook Air so much, we built a 15-inch model. You won't believe how fast it is -- this Air has a quad-core CPU that's 50 percent faster than last year's MacBook Pro! The graphics are over twice as fast, and yet we've kept the same 10 hour battery life as the 13-inch version. If you've ever wanted to edit photos or home videos on a MacBook Air, this computer's for you. Oh, and it comes standard with the Touch Bar and Touch ID, too.

We think you're going to love the new MacBook Air. It's the best MacBook we've ever made.Everything I just said is true of Apple's new laptops. But all of it describes the new MacBook Pro, not the MacBook Air.Apple chose to market a thinner Pro instead of a faster Air, even though they're basically the same thing. And that's not lost on Apple -- it was Apple marketing VP Phil Schiller who suggested the 13-inch MacBook Pro (the one without the Touch Bar) was designed for MacBook Air buyers. (That's him in the pictures above.)"We think that a lot of potential MacBook Air customers are going to be very excited by this product, too," said Schiller.Microsoft and Apple faced off with different ideas of the creative computing future last week, and in many ways Microsoft looked like more of the innovator. The new wheel-like Surface Dial, a larger Surface Studio touchscreen computer, an improved Surface Book, and a bold attack strategy regarding affordable virtual-reality headsets as a patient build-up to a broader mixed reality future -- in which users can see virtual digital objects overlying real-world space -- gave Microsoft a unique angle compared to Apple.
In Cupertino, the big news was a smaller, thinner MacBook Pro with a tiny "Touch Bar" above the keyboard -- but with a main screen that's still decidedly touch-free. A nice laptop, to be sure, but ultimately a fairly conservative upgrade to an existing product line.CNET sat down with Panos Panay, head of Microsoft's device business, and the person directly responsible for launching the Surface, to discuss the new Surface devices and where the Dial and other accessories potentially fit in. (Our conversation took place after Microsoft's event, but a day before Apple's news became official -- though plenty of leaks were floating around that turned out to be accurate.)Surface Dial might be a hint at where Surface could evolve with new, affordable and transformative accessories. I asked Panay about the excited reactions to the Surface Dial, and even he seemed surprised. But Dial, which costs $99 (about £80 or AU$130), looks like it's a big part of where Surface is going down the road."Accessories can somewhat be undervalued in the sense that sometimes they're too easy to talk about, but we have a couple of accessories that, without them, the experience can't be completed," he said. "If I took away your keyboard right now. Or if I took away your trackpad right now, or when you learn to use the dial and we end up taking that away, your entire flow changes."
Despite the name, Surface Dial isn't just relegated to its own products. It will work on any Windows PC that's upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition.Panay hinted there could be more accessories beyond, which is a possible indicator of where Microsoft wants to innovate and stand out from competitors like Apple.Panay was excited to talk about Surface Book, which is really about a large enhancement to the performance base of last year's product -- Microsoft's first-ever laptop, which had a tablet-like screen that detached from the keyboard base, which in turn housed the main battery and extra graphics processor."When we made Surface Book we were super clear that the base was the innovation," he said. "The idea, though, when we built the product was this base can live separately. Meaning, if I wanted to create an LTE base, or if we wanted to create three times the battery, or if you wanted to create two times the power.""The thing I was most scared about with the new book is we were able to present it in a way where it didn't just look like, 'we updated the processor,'" Panay said.
The funny thing about the new Surface Book is that, even though you could swap out last year's Surface Book top into a new base, the base isn't being sold separately yet. "We talk about that all the time, what the options are," Panay said. But at some point, it seems, swapping new parts is the idea. "It's not as simplistic as something like Legos," he joked, "but it is modular because the OS allows so much to happen. So the truth of the matter is the OS is going to allow us to be extensible, and that's the beauty of the hardware and software working together. That's a big deal."Even so, Panay is confident that the products being made now won't be instantly outdated. At least, that's the plan. "We wanna know that, for four to five years, you have everything you need," he said. "That you're not buying a product that you're trying to replace in 12 months."Microsoft still sees itself as leading the way by example for third-party manufacturers of Windows computers like Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer and others -- though, at times, the Surface line may look like its own path."We are doing the thing we want to do," Panay said. "We want to create these categories, and it's super lovely that the partners are coming. It's humbling."
