On the right-hand side of the keyboard are a few dedicated buttons for controlling the volume or muting the laptop altogether. That's a handy touch if you quickly need to mute the sound during a presentation or hide the fact that you're playing games during the quarterly meeting. The trackpad is pretty small but its texture makes it easy to use. The trackpad buttons -- also rubberised -- are big and easy to press. If you don't want to use the trackpad, then a track point -- a little rubber nodule in the centre of the keyboard -- allows you to skim the cursor across the page with reckless abandon. A duplicate set of buttons have been placed above the trackpad to allow you to navigate with one hand.Dell reckons the keyboard is spill-proof. Maybe it is, but the USB ports aren't. There's no webcam as standard on the E6420, so, if you want to enjoy the delights of video conferencing, you'll have to add one as an optional extra. The same goes for the fingerprint reader if you want to add an extra layer of security. While the E6420 packs a 14-inch screen, it seems somewhat smaller due to the massive plastic bezel. We don't like bezels here at CNET UK and this one's a humdinger. While bright and clear, the screen definitely doesn't deliver the contrast levels and deep blacks we like to see, but it will handle spreadsheets and presentations just fine.
With a 1,366x768-pixel resolution, the screen falls short of 1080p support, but you'll have no problem reading small text on Web pages, or viewing documents side by side.Around the edge of the laptop, you'll find an Ethernet port, three USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA/USB 2.0 combo, an integrated headphone/mic jack, a 54mm ExpressCard slot, and a smart card reader. The smart card reader will go down well with your IT department -- it allows you to use a key card to access your computer, as well as a password. That makes for double the security. There are VGA and HDMI ports too, which is great news if you want to hook the machine up to a projector so that you can give a presentation about crisps or something. The E6420 isn't a machine designed for high-performance media editing, or for chewing its way through the meatiest of games. Instead, it's better suited to handling spreadsheets, running presentations and all kinds of other business stuff we don't understand. Our sample ran on a 2.1GHz, dual-core Intel Core i3-2310M processor with 4GB of RAM. Annoyingly, it used the 32-bit version of Windows 7, so the machine could only actually take advantage of about 3GB of RAM. If you're thinking that the additional 1GB of RAM is therefore money wasted, you'd be absolutely right.
Those extra buttons above the trackpad are meant to be used in conjunction with the pointer in the middle of the keyboard. We fired up the PCMark05 benchmark test and the E6420 returned a score of 5,978, which is acceptable at best. The laptop will handle all the office-type stuff without breaking much of a sweat, but, if you were hoping to fire up Photoshop and tweak those high-res holiday snaps, you may find yourself turning as red as you looked on that beach in Spain. We trotted over to YouTube and fired up some 1080p video, which the E6420 handled fine. We didn't notice any freezing or jumping in the video and it only started to slow down when we tried opening more browser tabs. The screen's resolution means it can't actually display 1080p content, but it's good to know that the laptop can at least cope with playing it back, since you might want to output 1080p footage to a bigger display via the HDMI port.We didn't expect the E6420 to welcome much in the way of gaming challenges, but that sure didn't stop us from busting out the 3DMark06 benchmark test to see how it handled the polygons. The E6420 delivered a rather unimpressive score of 4,588, which means you aren't going to be busting out demanding 3D games on this guy.

When we ran our battery benchmark test, the laptop managed to hold out for 1 hour and 52 minutes. The test runs the CPU at a constant 100 per cent, so it's incredibly demanding. You'll get better performance with more cautious usage. If you're mostly performing office tasks on the go, you should be able to get 3 or 4 hours of life out of the battery, which isn't too bad for this type of machine. If you think you're going to be playing plenty of video, make sure you keep the plug nearby. The Dell Latitude E6420 may satisfy your business needs with its configurable security options and sturdy shell, but our sample's underwhelming design and performance mean it won't impress anyone in conference room B. Unless you're forced to by company policy, we wouldn't recommend you splash your cash on this machine.Hewlett-Packard says it has achieved a mobile-computing milestone by getting the HP EliteBook 6930p to operate continuously for 24 hours on a single battery charge. The laptop used in the test is, however, rather different from those consumers would pick up at the store, at least for now.
The machine's equipped with high-end components including Intel solid-state hard drives (SSDs), a mercury-free LED display, and an optional ultra-capacity battery. The cream-of-the-crop components played a crucial role in making the 24-hour battery life possible. HP says the Illumi-Lite LED display, by itself, boosts battery run time by up to four hours compared with traditional LCD displays, and the Intel SSD provides up to a 7 percent increase in battery life compared with traditional hard drives. In addition to helping achieve outstanding battery life, Intel's SSDs provide greater durability and reliability as well as faster system responsiveness. HP claims its benchmarks show overall performance boosts of up to 57 percent on industry benchmarks, and data transfer rates almost six times faster than traditional hard disks. While these numbers and the claimed battery life haven't been confirmed by CNET Labs' independent tests, they'd better be true as the components used in the test unit can easily dig a big hole in your wallet. Take the new SSDs, for example. They cost about 6 to 10 times more than regular hard drives.
Starting in October, you'll be able to purchase an HP EliteBook with the new Intel high-performance SSDs, if you can afford it, as HP is one of Intel's partners for its launch of the new Intel X25-M and X18-M Mainstream SATA SSDs.A 640GB hard drive and 6GB of RAM are more than you're likely to get elsewhere for the same price, but otherwise this $629 laptop is the picture of decently made mediocrity. Get it if you're desperate for an all-around laptop with some better-than-average graphics at the lowest price possible. Just be aware that even at its reasonable price, there are other options out there.Glossy white plastic is the order of the day on the Gateway NV55S05u. The back lid is patterned with subtle beige dots, a theme that's repeated on the silver plastic inner palm rest. Glossy, creamy white surrounds the wide keyboard/number pad and the upper screen bezel, almost giving this Gateway a white MacBook/Sony E-series look. This 1.3-inch-thick laptop is heavy at 5.8 pounds, but it's compact enough to slip into a large backpack or messenger bag.

The NV55S05u's power brick isn't as large as those on some similarly sized laptops; it isn't much bigger than an Altoids tin. The AC adapter plugs into the rear left side of the Gateway, behind heat vents and an Ethernet port. The wide, island-style recessed keyboard is a plus compared with the last generation of Gateway laptops we reviewed. The keys are a little mushy, but they're large and well-spaced, and a full number pad on the right side is welcome. Media-control, volume, and brightness keys share room with the number keys. Meanwhile, the too-small touch pad underneath shares the same smooth plastic as its palm-rest surroundings, recessed a bit, with a single flush button-bar beneath that felt a little loose on our model. Finger gestures were hard to pull off in such a small space. The big 15.6-inch, 1,366x768-pixel-resolution glossy screen on this Gateway actually looks pretty bright and crisp for a budget laptop, especially when viewed head-on, but at any other angle the image quality deteriorated fast. Text and pictures looked better than movies, although the lack of a higher-resolution screen results in a pixelated look to some content when viewed up close.
A speaker-bar grille above the keyboard only offered weak sound, tinny and unsatisfying for music or movie watching. This laptop cries out for headphones.Meanwhile, the built-in Webcam captures 1,280x720-pixel movies and 1,280x1,024-pixel pictures, with a picture quality and contrast that's good for most video chatting. On a laptop this inexpensive, the Webcam's better than average. You probably weren't expecting lots of bells and whistles on a $600-range laptop, and you were right. No USB 3.0, no Bluetooth; just three USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, and the DVD drive. The best features this Gateway fronts are its better-than-average hard drive and RAM allotments, at 640GB and 6GB apiece. This is the first laptop we've reviewed featuring AMD's A8 processor. The 1.5GHz quad-core A8-3500 APU is a system-on-a-chip that combines a CPU and graphics, with the aim of offering better graphics punch than Intel integrated graphics. We found Street Fighter IV ran at 29.9 frames per second at 1,366x768-pixel native resolution and 2x anti-aliasing, a very playable result, but far from stellar. We loaded Activision's Blur and played at full-screen native resolution with graphics at medium and 2x antialiasing, and got a playable result with a notably choppy frame rate. This Gateway is capable of running mainstream games, but it's far from the capabilities of a "gamer" laptop. The Asus U31SD-A1, equipped with Nvidia GeForce 520M graphics, ran the same Street Fighter IV test at 44.4fps.
In terms of CPU processing power, the A8 is distinctly less powerful than the Intel Core i5-2410M, and even fared worse than Intel Core i3-2310M-equipped laptops. The Core i3-packing Asus U31SD-A1, Core i5-equipped Dell Inspiron 15R, and Core i3 Toshiba Satellite L755-S5214 all were faster at both single and multitasking tests. We had no problems with this Gateway when doing everyday computing, and many users might not notice the speed difference; performance was more comparable to a last-generation Core i-series processor, which is certainly more than enough for most users. Some tasks such as software installation felt noticeably more sluggish. The extra graphics boost, even if middling, helps the overall experience a bit.The AMD A8-3500 APU is meant to be a competitive budget processor, and it is, but Gateway's pricing on other NV models with different processors doesn't reflect the savings, and therein lies our disconnect with this configuration. According to Gateway's Web site, another NV model features a 2.3GHz Core i3 CPU, the same size hard drive, and 2GB less RAM for only $499, and there's a model with a 2.3GHz Core i5-2410M processor, 500GB hard drive, and 4GB of RAM for $529. At these prices, the A8 processor doesn't feel like a bargain, even with its relatively better graphics--but, we did see this identical model on sale on Web sites for as low as $549.
