The prices of those battery packs for people ordering extra batteries have gone up," Dell spokesman Jess Blackburn told Reuters. "The industry is experiencing battery supply constraints because of these problems, therefore pricing is being impacted by current availability. But we are working with our partners throughout our supply chain to reduce the impact on our customers."It will take two to three months for the LG Chem plant to get back up to speed, which may be good news for competing battery manufacturers, such as Samsung and Sony.Now that the format war is over, with Blu-ray lording over the stinking corpse that was HD-DVD, some of you might be eager to upgrade your laptop drive to the winning technology.

Wired, however, strongly advises against this. The power consumption of a Blu-ray drive running at full-tilt while playing a movie is so draining that you can barely make it halfway through the show. To overcome this, you need to be close to a power outlet, or buy a laptop with extended cell option.We feel the same way, too. Moreover, there is the added complication that Blu-ray v1.0 does not play nice with the upcoming Blu-ray v2.0. This means the oh-so-expensive drive you are getting for your portable could be obsolete even before you take it out of its packaging. So put that wallet back in your pants and wait just a little longer.HP's Netbooks have traditionally come in two versions: consumer 10-inch models such as the Mini 210, and pro-level Netbooks such as the Mini 5103. The $299 Mini 1103 is both and neither. An affordable business/education-targeted Netbook, it has a bare-bones design while offering better bells and whistles under the hood than similarly priced competitors: Bluetooth, a 7,200rpm hard drive, and mobile broadband antennas all come standard. An excellent battery life only adds to its appeal. In the end, the Mini 1103 is still a 10-inch single-core Atom Netbook, but it's one of the better budget Netbooks you can buy.

With a 2.53GHz Intel Core i3 processor, this is a good example of a mainstream laptop that will suffice for everyday use, from Web surfing to Photoshop to watching HD videos online. While that Core i3 CPU is usually found in systems that cost a little less, in our benchmark testing the U41JF matched up well against systems with the step-up Intel Core i5 processor. Our takeaway is that you shouldn't dismiss this model, even if you had a Core i5 on your must-have list of laptop specs.There's also some very positive performance to be found in the Nvidia GeForce 425M GPU. It's controlled by Nvidia's Optimus switching system, which means the discrete GPU turns itself off and on as needed, and won't run down your battery when you're not, for example, playing a video game. Intel's new Sandy Bridge CPUs, with improved integrated graphics, may make mainstream graphics cards pointless for many casual gamers, but those systems are still some ways off from being widely available.As an example, we ran Street Fighter IV in the default mode, which automatically turned on the Nvidia graphics. At the native resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, the game ran at an excellent 68.4 frames per second. When we manually disabled the GPU, running instead on the integrated Intel HD graphics, the same test ran at only 14.9fps.

The biggest story in laptops over the past few years has been the incredibly popular Netbook. These 10- and 11-inch (and originally 7- and 9-inch) laptops came out of nowhere to capture the attention of a public tired of paying for too much computing power. After a couple of good years, however, Netbooks are being replaced by new systems that offer a little more performance for a little more money, first in the form of dual-core premium Netbooks and now in systems such as the HP Pavilion dm1z with AMD's new Fusion platform.The trade-up makes sense for two reasons. First, Netbooks, though great for specific tasks such as basic Web surfing and e-mail, simply aren't suited to being full-time PCs, which is something many users discovered after buying one. Second, the PC makers who only begrudgingly released many of these Netbooks in the first place knew selling a low-power $299 laptop wasn't exactly a money-making proposition.AMD has been promising a hybrid platform for years now, combining a workhorse CPU with better-than-integrated graphics in a single package. It's called Fusion, although confusingly, AMD doesn't play up that name or the processor model number, instead choosing to label laptops outfitted with the technology with a sticker that says "AMD Vision."

As the first of these systems to cross our desk, the $450 HP Pavilion dm1z is an interesting test case. It's an 11-inch laptop with a decent design, but one that doesn't hide its budget origins. It's about $100 more than an entry-level Netbook and $50 to $100 less than previous premium Netbooks that had AMD's previous low-end dual-core CPU.In practice, it gets the job done, and it certainly feels a world away from Atom Netbooks. At the same time, there's no mistaking the experience of this computer for a high-end 11-inch, such as Apple's MacBook Air (except when it comes to battery life, where the Pavilion dm1z was easily one of the best performers we've seen).The biggest needle-mover may be the AMD graphics, which aren't meant for serious gamers, but still offer a solid alternative to low-end solutions such as Nvidia's underused Ion GPU. We played some basic games and full-screen HD videos with no problems, which is something Netbooks typically can't do.

With Intel lacking a halfway point between its Atom processors and the mainstream Core-i-series (except for the too-expensive and underpowered ultralow voltage Core i3 ULV), there may finally be a spot at the table for AMD, which has been seriously underrepresented in laptops of late. Based on this one initial review unit, AMD-shy shoppers should at least give Fusion laptops such as this one a serious look.The designs of 11-inch laptops run the gamut from plastic cheapies to brushed aluminum works of art, but the HP Pavilion dm1z is clearly more focused on what's going on under the hood. The body is made of plastic, and looks and feels it, although it has a nicely curved shape and patterned lid that fits in with HP's current design aesthetic. A large battery bump protrudes upward right at the hinge between the chassis and screen, and the entire package is thick and bulky. It isn't actually ugly at all; it just feels a bit unwieldy. But perhaps we've been spoiled by thin ultraportables from Lenovo, Apple, and others.

The available space is put to good use, however, with a large island-style keyboard that goes all the way to the left and right edges of the keyboard tray and an oversize clickpad. The keys are firm and well-spaced, with large Shift keys and no keyboard flex. Some keys, however, get slightly lost in the shuffle. The page-up and page-down keys, for example, are completely unlabeled (they're mapped to the Fn+up-arrow and the Fn+down-arrow).The touch pad is of the same large clickpad-style seen on many recent HP laptops, and the design has its fans and detractors. We like the large surface area, but the built-in mouse buttons can be tricky to use, and the multitouch gestures don't come close to Apple's, although that's a complaint we can level at every PC maker.The desktop is crowded with links to bloatware and HP-branded services, from Snapfish to HP's music store. After a few years of reduced screen clutter, it's disappointing to see these icons starting to crowd the display again.

The 11-inch screen has a native resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, exactly what we'd expect for a laptop this size. The display gets bright enough and off-axis viewing is decent, but the glossy screen coating causes a good bit of glare, especially near windows. A thick gray screen bezel adds to the budget look, but at least the speakers are loud enough to make headphone use optional for movie-watching.There's a basic set of ports and connections here. HP sticks to its single audio jack standard for smaller laptops, and there do not seem to be any mobile broadband options available on HPs Web site right now, although that seems like a natural fit for such a portable system.The Pavilion dm1z represents our first shot at AMD's new Fusion platform. Launched at CES 2011, the Fusion APU (or "accelerated processing unit") uses a single die to contain, according to AMD, "a multicore CPU, a powerful DirectX 11-capable discrete-level graphics and parallel processing engine, a dedicated high-definition video acceleration block, and a high-speed bus that speeds data across the differing types of processor cores within the design." In plain English, it's a CPU combined with better-than-integrated graphics.

In our CNET Labs benchmark tests, the 1.6GHz AMD E-350 CPU performed well, beating lower-end Intel Atom CPUs, but falling behind high-end 11-inch systems such as the MacBook Air and Acer TimelineX, which have Intel Core 2 Duo and Core i7 ULV processors. The E-350 in the dm1z was slightly slower than AMD's previously comparable (but more expensive) low-end dual-core chip, the Neo X2 L625, as seen in the Lenovo X100.In practical use, the system felt much more responsive than even high-end Netbooks, and we ran into only occasional slowdown and sluggishness. At the same time, it wasn't as smooth an overall experience as one gets with the 11-inch MacBook Air (which also costs twice as much).When it comes to design in ultraportables, it's hard to top Apple's MacBook Air. That doesn't stop competitors from trying, though. The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is a bold, high-design 12.5-inch laptop that's thin, light, and very easy on the eye. What it isn't, however, is affordable: at a starting price of $899, the IdeaPad U260 qualifies as high end for most consumers, although it is a bit more affordable than Apple's 11-inch Air. It's undeniably well-designed, too, but whether the IdeaPad U260 is for you depends on if design matters more than performance and battery life.

A very light chassis, beautifully textured surfaces, a great keyboard, and other quality finishing touches come with some solid, though not overwhelming, specs: a Core i5 ULV processor, 320GB hard drive, and 4GB of RAM, along with a couple of USB ports and HDMI. If its unimpressive battery life were better, we would have considered the U260 to be one of the best ultraportables we've ever used; as it is, consider the IdeaPad U260 a fascinating, if flawed, experiment in high-end Lenovo design.The IdeaPad U260 is one of the first laptops to feature a 12.5-inch screen, making this ultraportable feel like a very svelte 13-inch laptop in everyday use. The design of the U260 is its biggest win: from its compact jewel-box-like packaging down to the colors, clean lines, and textured surfaces throughout, the U260 looks and feels like a luxury laptop.Available in either brown or orange (we chose orange for our review sample), the wider-than-normal U260 caught the attention of many casual eyes around the CNET offices. Flush lines and an integrated battery give the U260 a pleasing wafer-thin look, though it's hardly as thin as a MacBook Air. The colored wrap-around magnesium lid covers the top and bottom of the U260, sandwiching the black interior inside.

As good as the U260 looks, it feels even better to the touch: a rubberized outer surface offers great grip and hides fingerprints, and a leather-like textured palm rest area is one of the comfiest we've ever felt against our wrists. Inset in the middle is a full raised keyboard similar to the design we've seen in the ThinkPad Edge series. Slightly concave keys cradle fingertips perfectly, and the keys are well spaced. A column of page up/down keys on the right side mar the experience slightly, forcing the Enter/Shift keys into the middle of the keyboard, and the keyboard exhibited a bit more flex than the standard ThinkPad, but it's better than any other ultraportable outside of the MacBook Air.A single power button above the keyboard lies between small stereo speaker grilles, and a few status indicator icons light up stylishly in small grids of white LED lights. Framed by the glossy black-bezeled screen above, the U260 has a pleasingly restrained, composed look. Volume and brightness controls are relegated to function-combination buttons on the d-arrow pad. Unfortunately, there are no function-reversed control keys.
