Meanwhile, safe applications generally ran without a peep: in our false-positives test, Eset scored comfortably above average, achieving a 96% rating.Smart Security had minimal impact on system responsiveness. Its 91% performance score versus Microsoft Windows Defender represents a rating of 95% in the Explorer test, and 86% in our application benchmark: that's ahead of any other third-party software. If you aren't happy with the protection provided by Microsoft's built-in system, this is as good as you're going to get. Eset's 403MB disk footprint is more space-efficient than any of its commercial rivals, too.

Eset Smart Security 7 All that stands between Eset and an award this month is the price. Unlike most of its rivals, Eset doesn't offer big discounts through retailers, so a three-PC licence will cost almost double the price of Kaspersky's Internet Security 2014. That's hard to swallow when you realise the SysInspector and Social Media Scanner – two distinctive features – are offered as free, standalone downloads. Eset's anti-theft service isn't free, but it can be largely replicated by free services such as Prey.As such, we can give Eset Smart Security 7 only a qualified recommendation. If twenty quid here or there doesn't matter to you, by all means buy in: it's a superbly effective and low-impact security suite with convenient built-in extras. However, there are cheaper options that are almost as appealing.Dell has introduced a new "Hyperbaric" cooling system on its latest range of Vostro laptops.The Intel-designed system sucks cool air into the laptop instead of blowing hot air out, as is normally the case. The air is sucked in on the left-hand side of the laptop, passes over key components such as the CPU, and is then expelled from the right-hand side of the machine.

But with rumours of a larger iPad rife, the landscape could be about to change – and Samsung is staking a claim on this new sector with the Android 4.4-based Galaxy NotePRO 12.2.Inevitably, the NotePRO's dominating feature is its superb 12.2in display. It boasts a super-sharp resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 and bags of contrast: we measured maximum brightness at 328cd/m2 and contrast at 1,171:1.Unfortunately, a tablet this size will always feel significantly less portable than a regular 10.1in tablet, or an Apple iPad Air. Despite Samsung's efforts to keep the bulk down (the NotePRO 12.2 is a mere 8.7mm thick) it's more awkward to hold even than the hefty Nexus 10, especially one-handed – this is not a tablet you'll want to read while standing up on a train.Indeed, its 744g weight means you'll be looking to prop it up on a surface or your lap at every opportunity. It's surprising that Samsung hasn't seen fit to build in a kickstand.Aside from that oversight, there's little that this bear-sized tablet misses out on. Running the show is Samsung's top-of-the-line eight-core CPU, the Exynos Octa 5, effectively a pair of quad-core CPUs working in tandem.

The faster 1.9GHz cores are used for demanding apps and games, while the slower but more efficient 1.3GHz ones come into play for less-demanding jobs such as video playback.They're backed up with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of base storage, expandable via a microSD slot. The NotePRO supports all the latest wireless communications standards, including 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4 and NFC, plus Wi-Fi Direct support and AllShare Cast for mirroring to Miracast-compatible TVs and monitors.There is a 4G version (based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor instead of the Exynos), but it won't be available in the UK until 17 May. At the back there's an 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash, capturing photographs with plenty of detail and rich colour, with a second 2.2-megapixel camera at the front.As usual with the Note brand, the NotePRO 12.2 also comes with Samsung's S Pen pressure-sensitive stylus, which docks in a slot found in the top-right corner of the tablet. Pull it out and you can scribble notes, scrapbook parts of web pages and sketch out design ideas using the excellent SketchBook for Galaxy drawing app, which is free to download from the Samsung Hub store.

The NotePRO 12.2 runs on a base of Android 4.4, with Samsung's TouchWiz and "Advanced Magazine UX" optimisations on top. This adds tile-based homescreens to the Android desktop, which can be populated with news, app and social feeds.It's no different to the interface on the Samsung Galaxy TabPRO 8.4, and you get all the same professional applications preloaded.Acer is breaking new ground in the laptop market with the launch of dual-touchscreen PC.The Acer Iconia has a traditional laptop clamshell design, but replaces the keyboard with a second 14in touchscreen. The secondary screen has a software keyboard for typing duties, which is automatically activated when the user places both their palms on the screen.The Iconia runs Windows 7, although Acer is running its own touch software on top of the operating system to make finger-driven controls easier. There are touch-friendly versions of the web browser, as well as the music, video and photo players. Meanwhile, Acer's Gesture Editor allows users to launch applications or websites with customised gestures.The Iconia is more desktop replacement than ultraportable: the device weighs in at 2.8kg, which is more than twice the weight of the 11in MacBook Air. Neither does the main screen swivel and fold back into tablet orientation, with users forced to stick with the traditional laptop layout.

The laptop is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor (available in three variants up to the 2.66GHz i5-580M), which is complemented by 4GB of RAM and up to 750GB of hard disk space. The exact UK specification is yet to be confirmed.Intel's HD graphics power the two 1,366 x 768 touchscreens, but there's no built-in optical drive: DVD or Blu-ray will be supplied via optional external drives.When the IdeaPad Y510p arrived at the PC Pro office, it was clear its focus is high-performance gaming. With a pitch-black chassis and blood-red backlit keyboard, it’s reminiscent of Alienware’s intimidating range of dedicated gaming laptops, yet its price of £1,000 brings it more in line with mid-range desktop replacements such as the A-listed Asus N550JV.In fact, the similarities don’t end at the price. Like the N550JV, the Y510p has a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 Haswell processor, a 15.6in Full HD screen and discrete Nvidia graphics at its heart. The Lenovo has a slight edge, though, with a more advanced GeForce GT 755M GPU, 16GB of DDR3 RAM – twice the Asus’ capacity – and Condusiv's ExpressCache system, which utilises a 24GB SSD to accelerate the loading of commonly used applications.

This line-up of components led to a score of 0.9 in our Real World benchmarks, a 5% improvement on the Asus N550JV. The big advantage, however, came in the gaming tests, with the Y510p achieving an average of 39fps at native resolution at High quality settings in our Crysis benchmark. That’s very impressive for a desktop replacement – the N550JV scored 27fps.Clearly, it’s a quick performer, but Lenovo hasn’t neglected the basics. The Y510p’s keyboard is excellent, sharing the crispness of its ThinkPad cousins and giving a soft but palpable (and audible) snap with every keystroke. The intensity of the backlight can be adjusted easily by holding the function key and tapping the spacebar, although in standard office conditions we found it unobtrusive, even at its brightest setting. The only problem is the smaller-than-average backspace key, but in general the keyboard is ergonomically sound. The wide, buttonless touchpad works well, too, and its matte finish gives it a tactile texture that lends itself well to Windows 8’s gestures.As far as advertising spend goes, the Acer Aspire C720 has received more than its fair share since its launch.
