Lenovo’s engineers haven’t just tweaked the design for the sake of it. The new model not only looks prettier, but it’s also lighter and much more solid-feeling than before. The Yoga 2 now weighs a relatively dainty 1.39kg – 140g less than the IdeaPad Yoga 13 – a mere 60g heavier than Apple’s MacBook Air 13in, and only 100g heavier than Sony’s featherweight hybrid, the VAIO Fit 13A multi-flip. It’s also a millimetre thinner than last year’s Yoga 13.Yet where the Yoga 13 felt a little flexible in places, the new model’s build is rock-solid. Granted, it’s still no match for the Apple MacBook Air 13in, but it isn’t a million miles off. The base is super-stiff, and the lid feels capable of protecting the high-DPI display secreted within. In contrast with so many hybrid designs, the Yoga 2 Pro is refreshingly free from compromises when used as a laptop. Tilt back the sturdy-feeling lid, and you’re greeted by a full-sized, Scrabble-tile keyboard (which, incidentally, is now backlit), and a buttonless touchpad. There are minor niggles – the half-height Enter key, and the strip of navigation keys on its right edge take a little getting used to – but, most importantly, there’s just the right amount of resistance to each keystroke to make for comfortable typing, and the touchpad works well, responding reliably to everything from simple left-clicks to edge-swipes.
It’s the double-jointed hinge that allows the Yoga 2 to be so much more than a laptop, however. Push the display backwards, and it smoothly rotates backwards through 360 degrees, making it possible to flatten it against the back and use the Yoga 2 as a tablet. And although the keyboard and touchpad are left exposed when you do this, they’re disabled as soon as the screen passes the 180-degree mark. That’s not all, though. Tilt the screen part of the way back, and the Yoga 2 can be up-ended and used in “Tent” mode, which is perfect for achieving a comfortable screen angle on the fold-out tray of a train or plane seat. Alternatively, placing the keyboard face down and tilting the display backwards turns the Yoga 2’s base into a stable stand, while giving plenty of forward- and backward-tilt adjustment. It’s an ingenious design.Toshiba has issued a recall for T130 Satellite laptops after some melted, burning two people.A flaw with the power adaptor is causing overheating across three lines - the Satellite T135, Satellite T135D or Satellite ProT130."The defective harness may, in some circumstances, overheat to the point of melting the computer's base at the location where the AC adaptor plugs into the unit," Toshiba said.
The heat has lead to 129 complaints and reports of two minor burns and property damage, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said.Worldwide, 41,000 laptops are affected, but Toshiba wouldn't say how many were sold in the UK.The action is being referred to as a recall by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Health Canada, and Toshiba in North America.A spokesperson for the company in the UK said customers simply need to install a BIOS update to check for the flaw. "Should the BIOS determine that a harness failure is occurring, external power will immediately be disabled eliminating the possibility of the overheating," Toshiba said. "You will then need to contact the Toshiba call center to set up a warranty repair."Toshiba said anyone noticing an overheating laptop should unplug it, save any work while battery power remains, and take it in for repair.
Solar panels might not always be enough to fully power a laptop, but they could be used to help offset some of its energy demands. That’s the idea behind Intel Labs’ research into hybrid power supplies, which looks to use whatever sources of energy are available to reduce the draw on batteries. At the moment, laptops and other devices draw power from one source at a time. While solar power systems can be used to recharge a device, they usually aren't enough to power it - especially in cloud-strewn Britain. But researchers at Intel believe that even if solar panel adds only a few watts, it can still help extend battery life.If you’re stuck, you don’t care if it’s a car battery, so long as you get chargedIf you’re stuck, you don’t care if it’s a car battery, so long as you get charged The demo on the show floor at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco featured a sun lamp and solar panels, which contributed a few watts to powering the research team’s test laptop. The rest was drawn simultaneously from the mains. That might not sound impressive, but take the $80 solar panels used by Intel outside on a sunny day, and they could easily add ten watts, potentially extending a laptop’s charge time by hours. "You should be able to supplement power" by adding any available source of energy, said Intel researcher John Thompkins.

The system doesn’t only work with solar panels: Thompkins said the system was “power agnostic” and could work with hydrogen batteries or kinetic charging systems – even a hand crank. “If you’re stuck, you don’t care if it’s a car battery, so long as you get charged,” he said.“We’re so lucky to have power anywhere,” he said, gesturing to the strip of power sockets beneath the display table. “Many places in the world don’t have that, so to have another option could be a very big thing.”While the hybrid power system is fully functional, the project is still in its early days, and Thompkins couldn’t say when it might hit the market.Another project currently in the works at Intel Labs looks to better manage cooling systems in data centres - but started as research to make them quieter. "It started focusing on acoustics, but we found real, bigger impact in power savings," said Intel researcher Sati Banerjee.
Researchers developed an algorithm that could eventually be embedded in Intel systems to automatically adjust fans in servers, so they're only running at full blast when necessary, flipping on and off as needed. As cooling systems account for as much as 20% of the power use in a data centre, the savings could be big, with Banerjee saying the innovation could cut the energy used by fans by 10%.Shutting down fans more often also makes servers up to five times quieter. "For folks manning a data centre, it can be terrible to work there if the data centre always sounds like an aircraft taking off," she noted.PCs running Windows XP will no longer receive updates after 8 April, when Microsoft pulls the plug on support.Though the deadline is only two months off, one in three PCs still run the operating system, according to NetMarketShare stats. With millions of PCs at risk after the deadline, Microsoft and its manufacturing partners have offered a range of discounts and cashback offers to try and persuade small businesses to upgrade. We've rounded them up here - drop us a line in the comments if you've seen one we've missed.Microsoft is currently offering sweeteners on software upgrades for businesses. Those who upgrade an existing Windows Pro PC to Windows 8.1 and Office 365 Midsize Business will get up to 20% off licenses.
A second deal is also available to users who buy a Windows 8 Pro device, with 20% off Office 365 Midsize Business licenses. It isn't clear with either deal whether there's a limit on the number of licenses.Microsoft hasn't said how long the deal runs for in the UK, but the equivalent offer in the US runs until 30 April.Toshiba has launched a cashback programme for business users, offering up to £100 for certain laptops traded for new Toshiba models. While the marketing materials stress the deal is for XP computers, the terms don't appear to have that limit - which is true of some of the other programmes described here, so check the fine print if you're on a different OS and still want to take advantage of the discount. The programme runs until 30 March, but Toshiba will only accept laptops from specific brands, such as Acer and Samsung. The full terms are here. Customers must choose their replacement devices from Toshiba's business line-up.Lenovo customers can also trade in old PCs for cash. Unlike Toshiba, there's no restriction on brand, age or condition of PCs, though the older the device, the less cash customers will get back.
Business users can also replace the traded device with any Lenovo PC, including convertibles, desktops, all-in-ones and tablets, as well as Lenovo's new ThinkPad Yoga convertible for businesses.Dell is offering a speedy migration service for XP users who still haven't made the switch. The Windows Migration Fast Forward Service offers migration in 16 weeks - though at this point, that would still miss the April deadline. Dell hasn't said how much the service will cost, and it likely varies depending on your situation. It's also running a trade-in programme, offering up to £200 for old PCs or £250 for servers. The programme technically ended last week, according to Dell's terms and conditions, but the deals still appear to be valid on its site. The cashback amount will depend on what the customer buys, rather than the value of the traded PC. For example, buying a Dell Venue 11 Pro nets customers £200 cashback, while the 8in model gets £100.

HP is offering cashback of up to £100 on four G2 notebook models up until 30 April. Users may have to buy their new device from a specific reseller, such as Misco, in order to qualify for the cashback. Customers can also only submit cashback claims from 3 March. The problem with passwords can usually be summed up in three words: simplicity, memory and reuse.People tend to choose less secure passwords since they’re easier to remember, and this is often compounded by the habit of reusing the same insecure password for every site and service. Without doubt, this is seriously concerning.Sometimes, however, an unorthodox password problem hits you from left-field and leaves you reeling, which is exactly what happened to PC Pro reader Roger P when he purchased a new MacBook Pro with Retina display from his local Apple Store.Roger isn’t your typical security noob; in fact, he takes this data-protection stuff very seriously and follows industry advice, such as employing a password vault. This is why his experience is so surprising.Roger installed his usual password – a complex one that contains the euro symbol (€) in several places – to restrict access to his account on the MacBook Pro.
He then downloaded 1Password v4 from the App Store and copied his 1Password keychain file from his previous MacBook Air onto the new machine. At this point, things took a turn. When the 1Password login screen appeared and Roger entered his password, it was rejected. After spending a good while troubleshooting the problem, Roger realised the Apple Store had sold him a machine with a US keyboard layout. This meant that hitting Alt+2 didn’t produce the € character, as it would on a UK keyboard. The problem wasn’t immediately obvious to Roger, since all his previous MacBooks purchased from Apple Stores in the UK had UK keyboard layouts. Not being able to see your password by default as you enter it doesn’t help, although this option can be configured to display the input if you need to troubleshoot.I wouldn’t recommend disabling the asterisk option permanently, however, since you never know who may be watching you type.I’m glad Roger got to the bottom of this issue, and I can sympathise, since I’ve been in a similar position myself. I recall being in a hotel room in Seattle without my laptop, since I’d opted to travel light on this occasion.
The only “smart” device I had with me was a Palm Pilot 1000 (which should date this anecdote fairly precisely). I’d decided I could keep in touch with my email via that internet thingy and the awfully clever connected TV in my hi-tech hotel room. The trouble was, my password included a pound sign, and the keyboard I had was a US one. Worse still, there was no way of changing this on the system in use in that room, not even by an experienced hacker such as me.The lesson I learned was to avoid using in my passwords non-alphanumeric symbols that are keyboard-layout dependent.SSD sales for PCs almost doubled last year, but the overall computer storage industry still shrunk, reflecting the struggling PC market.Storage sales for computers fell 5% last year across hard disk drives, solid-state drives and optical disk drives, according to IHS iSuppli stats, with total shipments of 755 million globally in 2013 down from 794 million in 2012.SSD shipments grew by 82%, while HDDs fell 7% and optical drives slid 12%; solid-state drives continue to make up a small portion of the total, however, with only 57 million units sold.
