Microsoft denies that, and has said that it only hands over customer data when properly requested by intelligence agencies, but an air of mistrust has remained, especially in Europe and China. If Microsoft follows through on Smith's suggestion, it would mark a departure from US technology companies' largely unified response to the NSA scandal, which has so far steered away from the idea of offering non-US data storage for overseas users.Microsoft, along with Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter and others jointly called in December for reforms in the way governments use internet surveillance, lobbying for more transparency and a ban on bulk data collection. But the companies also backed free access to data and demanded that "governments should not require service providers to locate infrastructure within a country's borders or operate locally."Offering customers the choice of data centres would be easier for Microsoft than some smaller companies, as it already has a number of storage facilities across the globe.Smith has in the past written about Microsoft's desire to protect customer data from cross-border snooping by governments, in earlier attempts to soothe overseas concerns.

"We'll assert available jurisdictional objections to legal demands when governments seek this type of customer content that is stored in another country," Smith wrote in a blog on Microsoft's site in December.Companies spend only 12% of IT security budgets on physical protection, and even the safeguards in place are rarely used, according to security accessories company Kensington. The lock-making company recently commissioned a report looking into security measures designed to stop laptop theft and came to the frank conclusion that they were often left at home or in laptop cases.“People aren't using them very much at all,” admitted Kensington business development director Stephen Hoare.According to Hoare, although half of companies issue locks for their staff to use when on the road or in the office, only 40% of those locks are actually used, with end users complaining that existing locks were too fiddly.

This despite the fact that nine out of ten companies interviewed in the research - conducted by IDC - had suffered laptop theft “on epidemic levels” in the last year.Organisations lost, on average, 11 laptops a year, and 58% of thefts took place in the office. The figures came out to coincide with the launch of a Kensington lock that the company says is easier to deploy and should improve compliance with company security policies. The £60 ClickSafe system involves a swivelling anchor unit that users attach semi-permanently to the Kensington slot found on most laptops. The 5mm-thick security loop cable then clips directly into the anchor unit, streamlining what Kensington admitted was previously a fiddly five-step locking process. However, a key is required to unlock the cable from the anchor point, so beware snapping the lock into place at, say, an airport before checking you have the means to unlock your laptop.

Two years after its launch, there’s still a surprising amount of confusion surrounding Office 365. Many people equate it with Office 2013, assuming it’s simply the latest version of the desktop productivity suite.Others think it’s a straight rival to Google Drive. However, as regular PC Pro readers will know, it’s far more than either of those definitions. It doesn’t help that there are so many incarnations of Office 365 available. For home use, however, it’s relatively simple: £8 per month (or £80 per year) buys you the latest version of the desktop Office suite, 20GB of online storage via Microsoft OneDrive and an hour’s worth of free Skype calls. When it comes to businesses, Office 365 is as much about offering a service as it is about productivity software. Its first ace card is hosted email, with small businesses – up to 25 users – able to buy email, shared calendars and 50GB of email storage per user from £3 per month. Also, employees can share “presence” information – for example, the fact they’re in a meeting – send instant messages and conduct web conferences. Every user is allocated 25GB of storage on OneDrive Pro, too.

If you shell out £8 per user per month, employees also gain access to the main Office 2013 apps – including Access and Outlook – and a licence to use them on up to five PCs or Macs. This is backed up by 24/7 phone support for “critical issues”, although you may well choose to buy Office 365 through a partner and build support into that contract.Larger businesses have a similar set of options, varying from a straight hosted email plan for £3 per month to the full-fat Enterprise E3 option for £15. But do the features merit the monthly payment? In Excel and Word, Microsoft has the two undisputed heavyweights of the productivity division. Word lets anyone create professional-looking documents and, despite its detractors, the ribbon interface is key to this: all the most popular commands sit on the Home ribbon, meaning a few clicks can turn a dull page of text into something you’d be happy to hand out at a board meeting.Excel is another brilliantly polished tool, with lots of built-in intelligence to speed up work. For example, if you import a load of data and need to tidy it up, Excel will examine your columns and rows for patterns, so that when you start typing into an adjacent empty cell, the rest of the column will auto-fill.

Let’s say you have a column containing the full names of your employees; if you start typing someone’s surname in an adjacent column, Excel will “Flash Fill” it with the surnames of all the employees. Its charts are also in a different league to those of most of its rivals – they look more professional, and Excel is better at recommending the right chart for your data.PowerPoint is constantly improving, too. Again, Microsoft has made it easy to quickly achieve professional-looking results. That said, it lacks the glitz and slick inter-slide animations of Apple’s Keynote. Also, while fewer people will use Access (or Publisher, the desktop publishing software that’s part of Office 365 Home), it’s capable of producing complex databases in the right hands.Subscribing to Office 365 ensures you’ll always have the most up-to-date version of the desktop suite. Office 365 Home buyers receive five desktop licences, which will work across Windows and Macs. What’s more, if you need to do some work on someone else’s PC, you can stream Office to that machine. Thanks to incredibly clever technology, you can be working in your customised version of PowerPoint in a matter of minutes.

It wasn’t long ago that Office’s mobility features were limited to installing it on a laptop, but Office 365 turned this on its head. The central tenet is that documents are stored locally, then mirrored on the cloud via OneDrive. This means you can access them wherever you are – and on whichever device you choose. This vision isn’t yet perfect, but it’s improving. We used to criticise OneDrive for ponderous synchronisation, but this problem seems to have been fixed. That said, Microsoft is still dragging its heels as far as creating a tablet version of Office is concerned.A report from the British Educational Supplies Association (BESA) showed there are 2.54 million computers in use across UK state schools, an increase of half a million over the past five years.Of those, the vast majority – some 1.75 million – are desktops, but this year will mark the first time primary schools will buy more laptops than desktops, while secondary schools will split evenly between the form factors.Using computers to learn is no longer about being fixed in a single classroomUsing computers to learn is no longer about being fixed in a single classroom“Laptops are more versatile than desktops,” BESA’s director Ray Barker told PC Pro. “Using computers to learn is no longer about being fixed in a single classroom.”Laptops and netbooks allow teachers to bring IT into the classroom as and when it’s needed, rather than have it limited to specific computing classes, he noted.

But there are challenges, as using laptops requires keeping them charged and secure, and means schools need to move closer to a one-to-one ratio of computer to student.Such a goal could become more difficult as budgets get tighter. “In the past, schools used to get more funding for tech every year, when it was a Government priority,” he said. “We’re going to find the money isn’t there anymore.”As school budgets have tightened, computer replacement cycles have stretched out, leaving students with ageing machines.“Replacement is going to be a problem,” Barker said. “But a five-year-old computer can still be fit for purpose… it’s not as much of a problem as it used to be.”New techWhile some forms of mobile computing have taken off, tablets and eBook readers remain rare in classrooms.“Tablets haven’t really taken off,” he said. “I think that’s more to do with the price. Traditional laptops have really come down in price and schools are using more things like netbooks.”

Barker doesn’t see eBooks taking over from standard books anytime soon, as most publishers still aren’t willing to put the money into developing textbooks. “eBook readers are not really taking off in education yet,” he added. “But that’s not to say they won’t.”When it comes to broadband, the study found that primary schools have, on average, a 9Mbits/sec connection, while secondary schools have an average 31Mbits/sec. However, secondary schools say they need twice that bandwidth to keep up with student needs.“Generally, schools demand more and more internet access,” Barker said, “which shows they want to do more and more online.”The vast majority of schools are deploying wireless networks, with three-quarters of primary schools and 92% of secondary schools losing the cables. The Raspberry Pi 3 is one of the best microcomputers around, because it combines impressive speed with good value in a tiny form factor. It’s also versatile too, so it can be used for loads of projects – from making a cat feeder, to a local FM Radio transmitter. However, you can also use a Raspberry Pi 3 with Kodi, one of the best bits of streaming software around, and you’ll end up with a speedy, dedicated media dongle on the cheap. With nothing more than a Raspberry Pi, a few cables and an open-source Linux distribution, you can network all your media together and display it on your big, shiny flat screen. Interested? Here’s how to do it.

If you want to use your Raspberry Pi as a media centre, there are a number of purpose-built OSes to help you get started. Our favourite is OSMC, a version of Kodi (formerly XBMC) optimised for the Pi. Luckily for those unfamiliar with microSD card flashing, disk images and Linux distros, Raspbmc is one of the default OS options pre-packaged with the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s NOOBS installer. Simply follow our beginner’s guide to setting up a Raspberry Pi, but when prompted to select a distro package to install, select Raspbmc from the list rather than Raspbian. Once it’s installed and booted up, the first thing you’ll want to do is connect to your Wi-Fi network. Head over to the Programs tab, and go into the Raspbmc Settings menu. The Network tab of this menu will allow you to edit your wireless configuration by entering your network name and password, after which you should be fully connected. However, as the Pi Zero doesn’t have onboard Wi-Fi, for this model you’ll need a USB adapter/dongle. Linux, and the Raspberry Pi in particular, can be very fussy about which adapters it works with, so make sure to check out this list of compatible models and purchase a new one if necessary.
