Visually, Samsung hasn’t changed a thing, and with good reason: the Series 9 remains one of the swankiest laptops money can buy. The main alteration is the colour: the previous model we reviewed came in a dark, lustrous blue; the Series 9 900X3D is finished in sparkly, matte silver.Squint and you could mistake it for an Apple MacBook Air, but the Series 9 has a look of its own. Unlike the Dell XPS 13, which grabs attention via flashy carbon fibre and shiny chamfered edges, its smooth curves and simple lines create a more understated figure. It’s beautifully constructed, too. Despite weighing only 1.11kg, it feels rock-solid throughout. The lid is only 4mm thick, yet barely moves when you try to yank it to and fro, and we almost hurt our wrists trying to find any give in the base. No other Ultrabook, the MacBook Air included, can match the standard of its build.

The Series 9 oozes quality. The keyboard backlight smoothly comes to life when the lights go down, and, while we’d like more feedback from the short-travel keys, the spacious, Scrabble-tile layout and grippy, matte keycaps make amends. The glass touchpad is top class: Windows 8’s edge-swipe gestures feel slick and activate reliably; zooming, pinching and two-fingered clicks all work with zero effort.Pushing such refined design below the £1,000 mark clearly hasn’t been easy, and the main compromise is performance. Samsung has, in fact, downgraded the CPU from the last model to a 1.4GHz Core i5-2537M, and, with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, the 900X3D is anything but top of the range. Its overall score of 0.52 in our Real World Benchmarks is a long way behind the XPS 13’s 0.73.The Acer Iconia has a traditional laptop clamshell design, but replaces the keyboard with a second 14in touchscreen. The secondary screen has a software keyboard for typing duties, which is automatically activated when the user places both their palms on the screen.

The Iconia runs Windows 7, although Acer is running its own touch software on top of the operating system to make finger-driven controls easier. There are touch-friendly versions of the web browser, as well as the music, video and photo players. Meanwhile, Acer's Gesture Editor allows users to launch applications or websites with customised gestures. The Iconia is more desktop replacement than ultraportable: the device weighs in at 2.8kg, which is more than twice the weight of the 11in MacBook Air. Neither does the main screen swivel and fold back into tablet orientation, with users forced to stick with the traditional laptop layout. The laptop is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor (available in three variants up to the 2.66GHz i5-580M), which is complemented by 4GB of RAM and up to 750GB of hard disk space. The exact UK specification is yet to be confirmed.

Intel's HD graphics power the two 1,366 x 768 touchscreens, but there's no built-in optical drive: DVD or Blu-ray will be supplied via optional external drives. It's been some time in the making, but Sony has finally found its answer to Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga range of hybrid Windows 8 devices. The VAIO Fit 13A multi-flip marries a handsome Ultrabook-class figure with an ingenious, concealed hinge that allows it to transform into a 13.3in tablet. The only clue to the VAIO Fit 13A's twin identities is the fissure running along the centre of its lid – it's here that the hinge for the laptop's dual-position display hides.Release the latch above the keyboard and the screen spins through 180 degrees, strong magnets snapping it into place. That done, you can fold the screen flat against the laptop's body and use it as a tablet, or tilt it up and use the keyboard base as a stand. It's a party trick we've seen before in the Sony 14in VAIO Fit 14A multi-flip, but the VAIO Fit 13A multi-flip is far lighter and more portable, measuring 18mm thick and weighing a mere 1.29kg.The 13.3in touchscreen is justifiably the centre of attention. It's an IPS panel providing a pin-sharp Full HD resolution, and its 313cd/m[sup]2[/sup] maximum brightness and 826:1 contrast ratio are matched by a vivid palette of colour. This is one of the few laptop displays to cover the entire sRGB gamut.

It's very accurate: we measured an impressive average Delta E of 3.1, ensuring photos and video will look as they're meant to. There's a stylus supplied in the box, which provides pressure-sensitive inking and handwriting support. The only negative point is that the faint grid pattern of the digitising layer is visible, but given the quality elsewhere, this is forgivable. No Ultrabook possesses an abundance of ports, but the Sony is comparatively well appointed. There are two USB 3 ports, an HDMI output, an SD card reader and a 3.5mm headset jack scattered around its slender edges, and the provision of dual-band 802.11abgn wireless, Bluetooth 4 and NFC nails most of the essentials.Spend a little longer with the Sony, however, and its flaws bubble to the surface. Performance is the first to suffer. In our tests, the Sony's cooling fans struggled to keep the Haswell CPU in check: the fans ran almost constantly in everyday use, and spun up noisily during benchmarking sessions. It was only once we engaged the Sony's silent mode that the fans went quiet, but this had a deleterious effect on performance, throttling the CPU to a maximum of 800MHz.

Even with the Sony's Performance mode enabled, we noted slightly lower performance than with similarly specified rivals: the VAIO Fit 13A multi-flip scored 0.57 in our Real World Benchmarks. We suspect this result is down to the CPU running too hot to use Turbo Boost effectively. By comparison, the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus all possess the same i5 Haswell processor and hit benchmark scores of 0.59, 0.61 and 0.64 respectively.Intel's Haswell does its best to swell the Sony's reserves of stamina, however. With screen brightness dimmed to 75cd/m2, and Wi-Fi toggled off, the VAIO Fit 13A multi-flip lasted 7hrs 25mins in our light-use battery test. That's acceptable, but not the best we've seen.Sadly – and just as we found with its big brother – the overall design leaves much to be desired. The sharp edges of the metal keyboard surround occasionally catch the wrists, and since the metal layer slightly overhangs the Sony's sides, it can obstruct chunkier USB devices or 3.5mm headphone jacks.

Build quality could be improved upon. The base flexes readily to and fro, and the noticeable give in the keyboard panel leaves each keystroke feeling deadened and lacking in feel. The buttonless touchpad is unimpressive, too, and we often found ourselves dabbing it multiple times to register left- and right-clicks – a driver may rectify matters in time, but for now it's frustrating. The VAIO Fit 13A multi-flip is attractive, both visually and physically, but it puts in an inconsistent showing. The elegant hinge design and glorious display are soured by negatives such as the noisy cooling fans and patchy build quality. There's promise here, but if you're in the market for a hybrid device, the Dell XPS 12 is a far better buy.The man credited with designing the first laptop computer has been honoured with the 2010 Prince Philip Designers Prize.Bill Moggridge designed the GRiD Compass laptop during the late 70s and early 80s, after heading West from his London design consultancy and ending up in Silicon Valley, where GRiD boss John Ellenby was hoping to take advantage of ongoing component miniaturisation.Although Moggridge's Compass now looks archaic, its laptop lineage remains clear, as modern machines continue to use the same clamshell design. The flat 320 x 240-pixel electroluminescent display, the low-profile keyboard and the die-cast magnesium enclosure are all recognisable in the Compass's descendants, even if the 5kg payload is not.Featuring an Intel 8086 processor, its own GriD-OS operating system and a modem for connecting to central servers, the Compass used a General Purpose Instrumentation Bus for connecting external storage devices. The revolutionary laptop didn't come cheap, however, and early adopters had to pay almost £5,000 for the novelty when it was launched in 1982.Early customers included NASA, which used the computer to help with navigation on its Space Shuttle missions once they were out of range of Earth-bound navigation tools.“His phenomenal success is emblematic of the industrial designer’s skill in visualising and giving form to intangible data and human sensations,” said the Royal Society of Arts, which nominated Moggridge for the award.Moggridge – descibed by the BBC as “astonished" with the prize - continues his work as free thinker as director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.Researchers have proven that laptop webcams can be remotely activated without the warning light being switched on, giving rise to yet more snooping fears.A research paper published by a team from John Hopkins University shows how the webcam on previous generation MacBooks can be switched on independently of the warning light, although the researchers warn that the same method could likely be used on other laptop models.

MacBooks are designed to prevent software activating the webcam without first switching on the LED. However, the researchers devised a way to reprogram me the microcontroller within the webcam so that it didn't activate the LED, using a Remote Administration Tool (RAT).The flaw would allow malware "to covertly capture video, either for spying purposes or as part of a broader scheme to break facial recognition authentication," the research paper concludes.Indeed, there have been several cases of people caught hacking into webcams, such as 19-year-old Jared Abrahams, who earlier this year pleaded guilty to attempting to extort money from women whom he'd managed to take naked photos of using their laptop webcam. The victims included a Miss Teen USA, who identified herself on Twitter as one of a dozen women who had been targeted by Abrahams.

Several laptop makers now install manual sliders on their webcams that allow users to physically cover the lens when not in use.For those who own laptops without sliders, the solution is a little more rudimentary: apply a piece of tape over the webcam when it's not in action.Lenovo has unveiled a ream of new convertibles and laptops at CES, including the third generation of its ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook. The core specs of the X1 Carbon have been given a respectable bump. The touchscreen version of the 14in business laptop now sports a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 - an improvement on the 1,690 x 900 of its predecessor. Non-touch variants are available at both 2,560 x 1,440 and 1,690 x 900.On the inside, the laptop benefits from the Haswell treatment, configurable up to Core i7, with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of SSD storage. There are now two USB 3 ports, compared to the single USB 3 and USB 2 on its predecessor, and a full-sized HDMI instead of the micro-HDMI used before.Other new features include a new context-aware keyboard strip, replacing the row of Function buttons at the top of the keyboard. According to Lenovo, the keyboard highlights controls that are relevant to the app being used at the time - volume controls during movie playback, for example - "simplyfiying the user interface".The company has also made the bizarre decision to replace the Caps Lock button with Home and End keys, and has also removed the dedicated buttons for the TrackPoint, which are now integrated into the TrackPad.

The Ultrabook also features a new "Rapid Charge" battery, which Lenovo claims can recharge 80% of the battery within 50 minutes.UK prices weren't available at the time of publication, but will start from $1,299 in the US.Lenovo's Miix 2 hybrid has also been refreshed with a 1,920 x 1,200 display and Windows 8.1. The 10in version comes with an Intel Bay Trail chip, while the 11in model will pack a more powerful Haswell processor. There's an SD card reader, HDMI, and microSD memory expansion to boot. The smaller model will cost $499, and the 11in model will cost $699.Furthermore, Lenovo has delivered follow-ups to the Yoga 11 and Yoga 13, both now called the Yoga 2. The 11.6in model should arrive later this month in the US, and comes with a quad-core Intel Bay Trail chip and runs full Windows 8.1 rather than RT. There's also up to 500GB of storage, up to 4GB of RAM and up to six hours' battery life. The laptop features a 1,366 x 768 IPS display. The 13in model comes with a Full HD screen, up to a Core i5 processor and a 500GB hard disk or hybrid hard drive. Battery life is promised at eight hours. That starts from $999 in the US, while the 11in model will cost $529. UK pricing wasn't immediately available. Intel recently updated the reference designs for its Classmate PC series -- small, tough laptops designed for students.

British PC maker Stone was one of the first to show off hardware based on the updated designs with the Classmate 3 – a "semi-rugged" 10in hybrid device that runs Intel’s Bay Trail T processor and Windows 8.1 Pro. Since it’s aimed at students, Stone debuted the new laptop at educational technology show BETT, where we took a look at the device.Given the growing number of low-cost, compact Windows 8.1 tablets now on the market, the Classmate 3 feels surprisingly pricey. The convertibles will cost a "ballpark" £350 when they arrive in the UK in March but that figure could go up or down, depending on the quantity ordered and the configuration. Explaining the price, a Stone rep told us the device is positioned between a budget PC and a high-end tablet.Like its predecessors, the Classmate 3 features a chunky, plastic design and round edges. It's light at 750g (without the keyboard) and folds up neatly like a briefcase, making it easy to carry on field trips or around school. Pressing the blue, plastic button at the hinge detaches the screen and converts the device into a fully functioning 10in Windows tablet with stylus – although we're not sure a detachable keyboard is a wise feature for potentially forgetful students. The HD, IPS touchscreen features a 1,366 x 768 resolution and looked sharp and bright even under the bright lights at BETT, while Bay Trail kept Windows 8.1 Pro running smoothly. The main drawback in tablet mode was using the stylus which, for practical reasons, was attached to the keyboard with an elastic string, making usage cumbersome and imprecise.
