Toshiba claims the technology will find a variety of home entertainment and business uses, including virtual 3D tours of houses in estate agents' windows. The full implementation won't arrive in Toshiba products until the beginning of next year. But when it does arrive in a saleable form, and perhaps with infrared sensors included, it could deal a deft blow to devices such as the Sony VAIO VPCF21Z1E, which remain dependent on the awkward specs. With the market for desktop PCs shrinking every year, more and more people are abandoning their PCs in favour of laptops. It's easy to see why: with Intel's Core architecture cramming desktop levels of power into affordable portables, even a budget laptop is often all anyone will ever need. Now, with the advent of Intel's latest microarchitecture, Sandy Bridge, its mobile Core processors promise to soar yet further into the performance stratosphere.Sandy Bridge is set to take pride of place in everything from affordable budget notebooks to premium mobile workstations, and Intel's gone back to the drawing board for the 15-strong range of Core-i3, i5 and i7 processors. The first flush of models are built on a 32nm process, with Intel's integrated HD graphics squeezed onto the same silicon die as the CPU, and support for DDR3 memory of up to 1600MHz. In addition, Intel's Turbo Boost technology has reached its second generation, and a new instruction set, Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX), serves to accelerate repetitive operations such as those required by media conversion software.
There's a baffling array of options too, with dual-core, four-threaded Core i3, i5 and i7 processors aimed at the mainstream audience, plus Performance and Extreme Edition models sporting quad-core, eight-thread architecture. It's perhaps fitting that our first sight of a Sandy Bridge laptop didn't exactly bowl us over. Indeed, those expecting visual fireworks will be seriously disappointed. Acer's Aspire 5750G is shod in an understated dark grey chassis and, were it not for the specification sticker ruining the surprise, we could have mistaken it for any mid-range 15.6in notebook.Beneath that mild-mannered exterior, however, lies Intel's Core i7-2630QM processor. Sat squarely in the upper echelons of Intel's newly revamped line-up of Core i7 processors (see table for full details), the Q in the processor's name denotes that the 2GHz i7-2630QM is one of the four-core, eight-thread models, and with a 45W TDP it's a processor you can expect to see making its debut across many manufacturers' desktop replacements and mobile workstations in the coming months.
While that base clock of 2GHz might not sound particularly quick, Intel's Turbo Boost 2 technology is now capable of pushing clock speeds much higher than previously; up to a maximum of 2.9GHz in the case of the i7-2630QM. As ever, the maximum speed increase is reserved for single threaded applications, but Turbo Boost 2 now allows for the CPU speed to be increased while all four of the processor's cores are working flat out.Microsoft is supplying Surface Pro 2 tablets with older processors, despite having promised customers upgraded components.Microsoft quietly upgraded the Surface 2 in January, replacing the a 1.6GHz Core i5-4200U processor with a 1.9GHz Core i5-4300U.However, the Microsoft Store is non-committal as to the processor current customers will receive, merely referring to the Surface Pro 2's CPU as a "4th generation Intel Core i5 Processor" - a description which could refer to either model.Given the lack of clarity on the website, PC Pro reader Jo Halfacre rang Microsoft in early January to confirm that the tablet would ship with the upgraded chip. "Having been assured that it was indeed the i5-4300 and no longer the i5-4200 processor, I proceeded to order a Surface Pro 2 128GB," she told us.

Yet when the tablet arrived it contained the older processor. She contacted Microsoft, and was told that the sales advisor she had spoken to previously had been mistaken, and that models using the i5-4300U weren't yet in stock."It was suggested to me that I wait a week or so and then call back, as they were expecting the tablets with the new processors to be available very soon," Halfacre said."So, on 6 February, I made the venture again and called Microsoft. Again I asked which processor was in the Surface Pro 2, and again I was absolutely assured that it was the i5-4300. I purchased one, and you already know the outcome of this: I received another Surface Pro 2 with an i5-4200 processor!"When Halfacre complained to Microsoft for the second time, she learnt that the company had received "multiple complaints throughout the previous week that customers were receiving i5-4200 instead of i5-4300 processors".
"I now feel like I’m in limbo because I don’t feel that I can trust what I am told by anyone from Microsoft," she added. "I need a new tablet/laptop and I am two months done the line and still waiting!"As might be expected of a business Ultrabook, Toshiba has prioritised practicality over attractive design. Mating an 11.6in tablet with a keyboard dock, the Portégé Z10t is finished in a frumpy grey, textured plastic, which, while unattractive, is designed to mask the wear and tear of office use and survive the horrors of a daily commute. At 794g, the tablet portion of the Portégé Z10t is substantially lighter than Microsoft's Surface Pro 2 . It doesn't match Microsoft's tablet for stout build quality, but despite some noticeable flex in the chassis if you grapple it to and fro, the tough plastics feel solid enough to fend off knocks and bumps. The tablet docks home securely into the supplied keyboard dock, and is held in place by a pair of chunky-looking catches. With the tablet in place, the Portégé snaps shut to make a stocky, 11.6in clamshell laptop. Thankfully, there's no danger of the tablet unexpectedly coming away from the keyboard dock – the recessed latch below the screen is impossible to disengage by accident. Together with the dock, the Z10t weighs 1.38kg.
Despite its compact size, the Z10t still manages to pack ample connectivity. Dotted around the tablet's chassis are a micro-HDMI output, a full-sized SD card slot, a single USB 3 port and a 3.5mm headset jack, while the keyboard dock adds full-sized HDMI and D-SUB video outputs, Gigabit Ethernet and a USB 2 port.Like several of its rivals here, the Toshiba touts 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and a Core i5 CPU. Unlike its peers, however, the Z10t employs one of Intel's Y-class Ivy Bridge processors, which has a lower power draw than the other Ivy Bridge U-class processors here. This results in lower system performance – the Toshiba achieved a modest 0.48 in our Real World Benchmarks – but keeps battery life competitive. In our light-use battery test, the Portégé Z10t lasted 7hrs 35mins, ten minutes longer than Sony's Haswell-powered VAIO Tap 11.The Toshiba's Full HD touchscreen also puts in a solid performance. Brightness peaks at 272cd/m2, contrast reaches an excellent 939:1, and only colour accuracy is significantly off the pace. Despite the IPS panel's wide viewing angles, it struggles to reproduce the most vibrant extremes of colour.
Unfortunately, the Z10t's ergonomics are a mess. Indeed, while the tablet portion works perfectly well thanks to its responsive touchscreen and light weight, the keyboard dock is an unmitigated disaster. As there's no battery in the base to counterbalance the tablet, the hinge barely allows the screen to tilt back past the 90-degree mark before toppling over. As a result, it's impossible to set the screen at a comfortable angle, regardless of whether you're using the Z10t on a desk or on your lap.Worse still, the keyboard's squat, flat keys barely give any feedback, and the decision to place the PageUp and PageDown buttons next to the right-Shift key is aggravating – it's all too easy to dab them by mistake. The touchpad is its main failing, however, and while the touchpoint gets a pair of dedicated, physical buttons, the touchpad is stuck with a pair of touch-sensitive zones beneath, which often required multiple taps to activate. The Portégé Z10t tells a cautionary tale: it's a solid, capable tablet ruined by a terrible keyboard dock. If you're looking for a true do-it-all business hybrid, we have one piece of advice: save up for Lenovo's ThinkPad Helix, it's well worth the extra outlay.

The Nvidia Tegra-based smartphone boasts a dual-core processor (each core running at 1GHz), 1GB of RAM, and up to 48GB of storage (16GB built-in with the option to add an additional 32GB via the MicroSD card slot). It has a so-called qHD display offering a resolution of 960 x 540.However, the smartphone really comes into its own when paired with the optional Motorola Laptop Dock. The smartphone slots into the back of the laptop chassis, behind the screen.
