The final novelty is Lenovo's OneLink connector, which takes the form of an extended power socket on the left-hand edge of the laptop. It's Lenovo's take on the old-style docking port found on the bottom of many business laptops, and it supports charging, data and video across a single cable. The forthcoming Lenovo OneLink Dock will use this port to add three USB 3 ports, a pair of USB 2 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, DVI and full-size DisplayPort.Ultrabooks are all about luxury, and Samsung’s Series 7 Ultra is no exception to the rule: the brushed aluminium chassis looks every inch the stylish ultraportable. Scratch the surface, however, and Samsung’s latest offering ups the ante with a Full-HD touchscreen and, most unusual of all, dedicated AMD graphics. It’s the screen that gets the Series 7 Ultra off to a flying start – the 13.3in Full-HD panel is superb. There isn’t even the tiniest hint of grain introduced by the touch layer, and the silky-feeling, gloss finish makes it a pleasure to flick, pinch and tap your way through Windows 8.
The image quality is deliciously vibrant, too. Photographs and movies flourish with natural skin tones and lifelike, saturated colours; the average Delta E of 3.1 also proves that colour accuracy is well up to par. The IPS panel’s brightness level of 322cd/m[sup]2[/sup] helps it to remain legible in bright conditions, and although the contrast ratio of 786:1 is a little behind the best Ultrabooks – the non-touch, Full-HD panel of Dell’s XPS 13 reached a stunning 1,034:1 – most people will be unlikely to be able to tell the difference. It’s a cracking all-round display.Even before you dab the Samsung’s power button, it looks every inch the high-end Ultrabook. The brushed metal finish is honed to a silky-smooth sheen, and we love the minimalist, unfussy styling. Burly build quality extends all around, and the Series 7 Ultra feels flex-free and amazingly sturdy no matter how much you twist and press on the chassis. That hefty build adds a few hundred grams to the overall weight, though – at 1.6kg, the Samsung is considerably heavier than stick-thin laptops such as Sony’s 1.05kg VAIO Pro 13.The Samsung also excels on a practical level. The Scrabble-tile keyboard is backlit, and quality is superb: the solid base and snappy action make up for the slight lack of travel, and we were quickly up to speed thanks to the full-sized, widely spaced keys. The sizeable trackpad is great, too – it feels lovely under the finger, and responds quickly to Windows 8’s variety of gestures.
On the inside, Samsung has included something that few of its Ultrabook rivals can match – a discrete GPU. The chip used here is a Radeon HD 8570M, but it isn’t exactly a high-end part: its architecture is based on last year’s HD 7000-series, and it has only 384 stream processors clocked to a modest 650MHz.Android is set to increase its dominance of the global operating system market over the next couple of years, according to analysts Gartner. The research firm predicts that device shipments of Android, iOS/Mac and Windows will all continue to grow over the next few years, when including sales of phones, tablets and PCs.Tablet substitution of notebooks will start to dissipate from this year onwardsTablet substitution of notebooks will start to dissipate from this year onwardsHowever, Android will far outstrip its rivals, increasing its shipments from 800 million in 2013 to 1.4 billon in 2015, a growth rate of 55%.

Windows will record growth of only 16% over that period, according to Gartner, while combined sales of iOS/Mac devices will show 34% growth. There is some good news for Microsoft in Gartner's tea leaves. Although sales of traditional PCs - defined as desktops and laptops - are predicted to fall by 6.6% this year, Gartner sees things starting to level out, as the novelty of tablets begin to wear off."Tablet substitution of notebooks will start to dissipate from this year onwards as consumers and businesses align the right device with the right usage pattern," said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner."As they do this, we will see where dedicated devices (such as tablets), or hybrid devices (detachable or convertible devices), fit in the overall portfolio of devices."The House of Lords will allow iPads and other tablets in official proceedings - but not laptops, over fears typing would be distracting. The Lords approved a one-year trial of "electronic handheld devices" to access documents related to official business, but preserved a ban on laptops.
The trial will only let devices be used to read documents, not to search the web for more information.Baroness Harris said an iPad would be more "proper" than noisy laptops. "The point about an iPad is that it is silent; there are no clicking noises. It is quite small and can be held easily in one hand," she claimed.Asked whether netbooks would be allowed, Committee chairman Lord Brabazon admitting he wasn't sure he knew what a netbook was, and the Lords eventually decided the rules came down to "whether they click or not" when being used. The point about an iPad is that it is silent; there are no clicking noisesThe point about an iPad is that it is silent; there are no clicking noisesThe chairman stressed that the frequent use of the iPad in the report was not due to any favouritism of the Apple device. "I use the expression 'iPad' in the same way that one uses the expressions 'Hoover' or 'fridge'," he noted.Admitted Apple fan Baroness Harris added that laptops were "old fashioned", but said the Lords' current lack of technology was worse."Our devolved Parliaments and Assemblies use laptops, although they are old-fashioned now," she said. "While watching them use that technology, I felt that we were very disadvantaged."
While the motion was passed, a few Lords shared concerns tablets would distract peers. "I must confess that I do not Google, Twitter, tweet or blog, nor do I have any particular desire to do any of those things, but it seems to me that to have handheld devices in the Chamber is not conducive to good debate and intelligent participation in it," argued Lord Cormack. He raised concerns it would be impossible to enforce rules around web access. "Therefore, anybody sitting in this Chamber with a handheld device could do anything from Googling facts to getting in touch with his bookmaker."We hear some speeches made in this noble House where perhaps playing Scrabble on our devices would be a better alternativeWe hear some speeches made in this noble House where perhaps playing Scrabble on our devices would be a better alternativeLord Deben countered: "We hear some speeches made in this noble House where perhaps playing Scrabble on our devices would be a better alternative."Others were worried Lords would appear to those watching on television to not be paying attention while fiddling with gadgets. "At least it would prove that those noble Lords were awake and not asleep," answered Lord Brabazon. "It would look no worse than that."
Baroness Harris said she would still make her speeches from paper. "I am a bit old-fashioned and the thought of standing up and referring to notes on my iPad is not very encouraging," she added. "I am old-fashioned enough to say that I will still be using paper, as many of your Lordships do in any case."Lord Deben disagreed: "Perhaps I may suggest also that making a virtue of being out of date is really not helpful for this House."While arguing in favour of better use of technology, Lord Lucas summed the whole debate up nicely, saying: "I am grateful to my noble friends for making me feel, for the first time in a while, that I am a member of the younger generation."A gaze-tracking technology - described as "Kinect for your eyes" - has been built into a laptop for the first time.Using eye motion to control computers has long been used to give the physically disabled a means of interacting with their PCs. However, it's previously required awkward and expensive headgear. Now, UI developer Tobii Technology has worked with Lenovo to build an eye-tracking system directly into a laptop. John Elvesjö, founder and CTO, told PC Pro that the Lenovo prototype laptop - on display at CeBIT this week - was the first to fully integrate his firm's technology, and a "first step toward the mass market".

It works very much like a Kinect for your eyesIt works very much like a Kinect for your eyesThe Tobii system uses infrared sensors to track a user's gaze across the screen. "It works very much like a Kinect for your eyes," Elvesjö said, explaining that it watches where your eyes look and how long they focus on a certain spot. The user doesn't need to wear any special equipment or alter their normal behaviour for the system to work. "As long as you're roughly in front of your computer, the screen will actually know your exact gaze point all of the time," he said. "It works like a touchscreen, but it feels your gaze point."Instead of pointing and clicking with a mouse, a user looks at the spot on the screen and clicks a button on the keyboard. "Instead of dragging around a mouse cursor, you can point with your gaze," he said."Pointing with your eyes is something you do all the time," he added. "If you want to click a folder on your desktop, the first thing you do is search with your gaze to find this folder."
There are other uses, beyond replacing the mouse. In a Word document, when your eyes hit the end of the screen, it automatically scrolls down. The system can also help users understand what they're reading, offering a synonym or translation for a word. "The human eye dwells a little bit longer on that difficult word, and we can pick this up, we know what you're looking at," said Elvesjö.And if your eyes leave the screen for more than 30 seconds, it shuts off, turning back on as your gaze returns. The technology hasn't made it into mainstream applications because it's been too expensive, too large for consumer machines, and too error prone. "The technology has matured," Elvesjö claimed.Tobii's system is currently being looked at by operating system developers, screen manufacturers, gaming companies and other PC companies aside from Lenovo, although Elvesjö admits it's still too expensive.Aside from the disabled, Elvesjö claims eye-tracking PCs could also be useful for those with repetitive strain injuries, computer-aided design and gaming. He expects it to become mainstream over the next few years. "The interest is pretty wide," he said. "What a computer can do when it knows what you have seen and what you've not seen is pretty enormous."
