Nicole Kobie, news and features editor: “There’s one aspect of Windows 8.1 that makes me want to cry out in frustration: when a Windows Store app opens in full-screen mode, yanking me away from my work. Whatever happened to multitasking? If Microsoft wants me to use the Facebook app rather than open Facebook in a browser tab, it must let such apps run in their own window on the desktop.“Leaked builds of Update 1 suggest Microsoft’s moving in this direction, making it easier to use apps with a mouse and placing app icons on the taskbar, for example. But it needs to go a step further: in Windows 9, they must run directly on the desktop. That will not only make Windows less frustrating on the desktop, but it will encourage us to use such apps – good news for users and developers.”The Roku Streaming Stick arrives in the UK mere weeks after Google's Chromecast, and not only does it look similar to Google's device, it hooks up in much the same way too. It's designed to plug directly into a free HDMI socket on your TV, and draws power from the TV (or the mains) via a micro-USB socket on its end.

The Roku Streaming Stick is more of a traditional streamer than the Chromecast, however, offering a user interface of its own and a dedicated remote control supplied in the box. Arguably that's an advantage over the Chromecast, which can be controlled only from a smartphone, tablet or laptop. To get started, simply plug in the Roku, connect it to your Wi-Fi network and set up a Roku account. Content can then be accessed by installing channels and apps from the Roku store: the packaging claims there are more than 500 to choose from (both free and subscription-based); in the UK this includes BBC iPlayer, 4oD and Demand5 – although oddly no ITV Player – as well as Sky Now and Sky Store channels, providing paid-for access to on-demand TV, movie and sports content. Streaming stalwarts YouTube and Netflix get a look in too, while Spotify, Rdio and TuneIn Radio cover your music streaming needs, among others.

There are also apps on offer to support streaming from local media servers, such as Plex, Twonky and Roku's own Media Player, while others allow you to connect to photo sites such as Flickr, Picasa and SmugMug. There's a host of niche-interest channels, both free and premium. All told, there's far more content on offer than you'll find with the Chromecast, and it all works seamlessly. The Roku streams video smoothly at up to 1080p, in as much detail as each service allows, and supports dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, so you should have no problem with local network throughput. The Chromecast, by comparison, is limited to single-band 802.11n.The Roku also gives you a better range of control options. You'll find yourself using the remote control most of the time, but it's also possible to mimic the Chromecast's casting abilities with the Netflix and YouTube apps on your phone/tablet, or to control things via Roku's own iOS and Android apps. The latter duplicates the remote control buttons, allowing you to navigate the UI, and can also display photos and videos stored locally on your mobile device. The apps and casting abilities aren't exactly slick, however. The iOS app is designed for the iPhone, and looks pixellated on the iPad; video-sharing on the Android app works on only five devices (the Samsung Galaxy S III and 4, HTC One, Nexus 4 and original Nexus 7); and while we had no problem casting shows from Netflix, we couldn't get the feature to work from YouTube.

We also found it frustrating to have to wait more than 30 seconds for the device to boot every time we switched on our TV. The front-end itself, once it appears, is perfectly clear and responsive, but some apps took an age to open after we'd selected them – around 30 seconds for Netflix and 15 seconds for BBC iPlayer.Despite these rough edges, the Roku Streaming Stick is well worth considering as an alternative to the Google Chromecast. Although it doesn't match its rival's simplicity or low price, it provides access to far more content, and its dual-band Wi-Fi capability means you're less likely to suffer from wireless interference. The Dell Latitude E7440 is the larger of Dell’s recently announced duo of Latitude 7000 Series business-oriented Ultrabooks, the other being the 12.5in Latitude E7240. Boasting a higher-resolution screen than the E7240, a Haswell CPU and plenty of upgradability, the Latitude E7440 makes an aggressive play for the business laptop crown. It’s certainly an attractively crafted machine. It measures 21mm thick at the bulkier, battery-housing end of the chassis, and weighs 1.63kg – which is admittedly rather portly by ultrabook standards. The design is tasteful, though, if rather plain and understated, and there isn’t a sharp edge to be found; every corner of the E7440’s chassis is carefully rounded off. The aluminium lid is honed to a brushed, matte finish, and the rest of the chassis is supported and strengthened by a metal skeleton and reinforced steel hinges, lending the Latitude E7440 a pleasingly sturdy-feeling exterior. For the most part, the ergonomics are sound. The backlit keyboard’s chunky, well-spaced keys are concave and grip your fingers, giving way to each keystroke with a satisfying, tactile click. There’s a wide shift key and dedicated page up and page down keys, and the responsive trackpoint is married to a pair of large, dedicated buttons beneath the space bar. The touchpad has an ever-so-slightly textured matte finish and discrete left and right buttons that feel substantial and responsive. Our only criticism is that there’s a little flex in the centre of the keyboard, but this is barely noticeable in normal usage.

The E7440’s Full HD screen is impressive. It’s easily as good as the ThinkPad X1 Carbon’s 1600 x 900 display: its maximum brightness of 342cd/m² is almost identical to that of the X1 Carbon, and its colour accuracy is the same (both scored an average Delta E of 4). However, its contrast ratio of 1038:1 blows the X1 Carbon’s score of 647:1 out of the water. Image quality is excellent, boasting saturated colours and pin-sharp images. The only niggle is that the panel crushes the darkest greys into black to give images an artificially bold, stark look.Inside, the Latitude boasts an attractive array of components. The base model is well equipped for its price of £839 inc VAT, with a 1.9GHz Core i5-4300U CPU, 4GB of DDR3L RAM and a 500GB SATA HDD. Our review unit, which sat at the top end of the range at £1,269, had a 2.1GHz Core i7-4600U, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB Toshiba SSD.Mohamed Hassan, an IT security consultant, claims keylogging software was preinstalled on two different models of Samsung's laptops, according to a report on Network World.

Our findings indicate that the person mentioned in the article used a security program called VIPRE that mistook a folder created by Microsoft Live Application for keylogging softwareOur findings indicate that the person mentioned in the article used a security program called VIPRE that mistook a folder created by Microsoft Live Application for keylogging softwareHassan claims he first spotted the Starlogger software installed on a Samsung R525 laptop in early February. After the laptop developed a fault with its video card, Hassan claims he returned the R525 and purchased another Samsung laptop - the R540 - from another store, which also contained the Starlogger software.Hassan claims the keylogger was detected by an unnamed utility, which he used to scan both systems. "The fact that on both models the same files were found in the same location supported the suspicion that the hardware manufacturer, Samsung, must know about this software on its brand-new laptops," Hassan claims. The Starlogger software claims to "records every keystroke made on your computer on every window, even on password protected boxes".It purports to be "completely undetectable" and offers the facility to "email its results at specified intervals to any email address undetected, so you don't even have to be at the computer your are monitoring to get the information".

Samsung claims Hassan's security software has delivered a false positive. "Reports that a keylogger was installed in Samsung laptops are not true," the company claims in a statement sent to PC Pro."Our findings indicate that the person mentioned in the article used a security program called VIPRE that mistook a folder created by Microsoft Live Application for keylogging software, during a virus scan.”Samsung's denial is vindicated by a blog post from security firm F-Secure, which shows that the VIPRE software falsely detects the StarLogger keylogger when a directory called "SL" is created in the root of the Windows directory.Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon 810, a next-gen mobile chip that features faster download speeds as well as 64-bit technology.Due to appear in smartphones in 2015, the Snapdragon 810 is Qualcomm's latest bid to use its edge in wireless technology to maintain its marketshare lead in semiconductors for mobile devices. The 810 chip includes new, faster Wi-Fi features as well as a 4G modem that Qualcomm says downloads data at twice the speed of chips made with its previous technology. The chip also allows for video recording and playback at 4K ultra-high resolution.Following Apple's launch last year of its first iPhone made with a 64-bit processor, Qualcomm and other chipmakers have been rushing to roll out their own 64-bit technology, which reduces the gap between low-power mobile processors and punchier chips used in laptops, desktop PCs and servers.

Qualcomm is announcing its newest chip before the preceding chip in its high-end lineup, the 805, has even begun to appear in smartphones. The 805 is due to appear in smartphones around mid-2014.Current smartphones, including Apple's, do not have enough memory to give 64-bit processors an advantage over more widely used 32-bit chips, but future phones will be made with enough memory to give the 64-bit processors a performance boost. Before 64-bit features can be taken advantage of in phones, the software and operating systems they rely on will also have to be overhauled, a major undertaking for the industry.

Qualcomm in December announced its first 64-bit chip, part of its low-end lineup and aimed for use this year in inexpensive smartphones in the fast-growing Chinese market."We're basically saying it's difficult to call exactly when 64-bit operating systems and applications will become mainstream, but by integrating them now we're future-proofing all of our platforms going forward for the benefit of our [customers]," executive vice-president Murthy Renduchintala told Reuters.Qualcomm dominates the market for advanced 4G wireless technology and its Snapdragon chips are widely used in smartphones made by Samsung, Motorola, HTC and other manufacturers.Anyone who delivers presentations regularly will know how much of a pain connecting to the projector or boardroom flatscreen can be. ViewSonic's ViewSync WPG-370 aims to make life easier by allowing you to connect your chosen presentation device wirelessly. It connects to your projector or boardroom flatscreen via HDMI or VGA, at resolutions of up to 1080p. However, the really interesting part is the broad range of incoming wireless protocols that it supports. Over an 802.11n Wi-Fi link, you can transmit visuals via Intel WiDi, Miracast and DLNA, or use ViewSonic's own software.
