"HP didn’t content themselves with owning the minds and fingers of the top 5% of the banking profession." In those days, HP didn’t content themselves with owning the minds and fingers of the top 5% of the banking profession. Other versions of the same form factor and entry logic were available for scientists, engineers and programmers. The HP-16C would do bitwise logic operations and convert from hex to decimal to octal, at a single press of one of those obdurately hard, clicky buttons. This was anything but a disposable calculator – even the labels on the buttons were moulded all the way through, making them impossible to rub off.

Anyone who is familiar with these pre-PC, pre-smartphone devices can now content themselves by prodding away at a fully functional emulator on all manner of x86, iOS or Android devices. In the wake of the HP-12C, a whole slew of apps and software emulators took advantage of HP’s liberal outlook towards the “source code” of its calculator. The more I delved through Michael's website (www.swissmicros.com), the more I wanted to hear his story – why he chose to embark on this improbable project, where he gets the hardware from and how much interest he’s had. Several emails were exchanged, but once I found out that he was based in Zurich, a date was set. I knew I would be passing through on a forthcoming trip so there was simply no excuse.

To be clear, I really like Premiere Elements’ Guided Edits. While Photoshop Elements’ similarly named feature presents advanced functions with simplified controls, Premiere Elements’ implementation just points to the controls required to achieve various functions. This makes it much easier to go off on a different tangent, and apply the skills to other parts of the application. The disappointing thing is that they’re trickling out at a rate of two per year. Guided Edits are nothing more than an interactive manual, and there’s no excuse not to cover the whole application with a few dozen tutorials and be done with it.Audio View is another new feature that’s largely cosmetic. It reveals buttons on each audio track for recording a narration and for soloing the track, but, surprisingly, there’s no mute button. A master level meter and fader help you avoid distorting the audio output, but there’s no fader for individual channels, despite what the pop-up mixer suggests. Instead, levels are set per audio clip. When in Audio View mode, the Tools, Transitions and Effects buttons in the Action Bar show audio-related functions by default, but all this amounts to is an interface tweak and little more.

The new animated titles are more substantial. There are 32 preset templates to choose from, organised by genres such as Sports, Travel and Wedding. They’re unusually elegant for consumer-oriented software, with simple illustrative graphics that shimmy into view along with a few lines of editable text. The trouble with the more elaborate templates is that it’s trickier to give the user free reign to customise them. The total length of these animated titles is fixed, and inserting longer words than the template allows sometimes causes them to overlap. Text can be resized, reformatted and moved around, but it’s a little awkward. The presets are downloaded on demand, but doing so is painfully slow — 4MB downloads consistently took over a minute.

Another key new feature is 4K support, with Adobe making specific references to the Panasonic GH4, Sony AX100, GoPro Hero 4 and a few other cameras. We had no problems importing 4K footage from a variety of sources, but preview performance was predictably poor on our Core i7 3517U laptop. Sony Movie Studio Platinum was no better when handling 4K footage directly, although it has the significant advantage of proxy editing – where temporary 720p copies of footage are generated to speed up preview performance.A long-running complaint of mine is how tricky it is to maintain consistent frame rates and resolutions from import to export. This is much improved in version 14, with a revamped Export dialog box that automatically matches the frame rate to the source footage and offers various popular resolutions such as UHD 4K (in XAVC-S format), 1080p and 720p.

Meanwhile, the Advanced Settings panel gives options to adjust export settings manually, including detailed control over compression and the ability to save user presets. There are tick boxes to force the resolution, frame rate and compression profile to match the source footage. Frame rate mismatches should, therefore, be a thing of the past. There’s an opportunity to set the resolution and frame rate of the timeline when creating a new project, although you may as well ignore this since the software automatically changes these to match the first imported media. Confusingly, the timeline counts up to 30 frames for each second, regardless of the source footage. In fact, it does use the correct number of frames per second on the timeline. For lower and higher frame rates, it skips or duplicates the numbered frames as necessary to give the required number. There’s still no support for 2.7K resolutions on the timeline, but while this won’t be an issue for most people, it means the software refuses to apply its excellent Shake Stabilizer effect to 2.7K GoPro footage.

The revamped export facilities are the unlikely highlight of the Premiere Elements 14’s features, but as for the rest, it’s frighteningly slim pickings. This is not an update existing users will be queuing up to move to.Premiere Elements remains the best editor for newcomers who want a video editing package they can grow into. However, I prefer Sony Movie Studio Platinum with its streamlined efficiency and greater attention to detail.Encryption may not sound like an inviting topic. Investing in an encryption framework doesn’t do anything for your bottom line, and the implementation is associated with slow, intrusive processes that make employees and IT managers shudder alike. But using encryption could save your business from a lot of trouble. You might imagine that only organisations working on confidential projects need to worry about encrypting their data. Yet while your employees may not be carrying around top-secret blueprints, their systems may still hold data that needs protecting.

“Even if you’re a small business, you’re still subject to the Data Protection Act,” noted Sian John, security expert at Symantec. “The law requires that you protect personal data from being stolen, misused or shared. If you have customer details stored on your computer, then using encryption allows you to say: ‘I’ve taken precautions to ensure that personal data doesn’t get lost.’”“There are also European regulations,” she warned. “We have new, general data-protection regulations coming down the line, which will require that you notify of any breach to your system.”Legal considerations aside, protecting customer data is simply good business sense. “We all have an expectation of privacy,” noted Anthony Merry, director of data protection at Sophos. “We’ve all seen the reports of high-profile data breaches in the newspapers. Customers know that if you have a data breach, they might have their identity stolen as a result. You can increase customer satisfaction by ensuring you protect their data.”

Aside from accidental loss, encryption can also be a valuable defence against hacker attacks. “We’ve noticed an increasing amount of malware that attempts to steal data,” warned Merry. “A data breach isn’t just data leaving the organisation – it’s data leaving in a form that’s usable to an attacker. If a hacker gets at your files, but only in encrypted form, they can’t do any harm.”Without a doubt, the most important data security measure you can take is to apply full-disk encryption on all mobile devices. “Let’s say somebody steals your encrypted laptop,” Merry explained: “If they don’t have the username and password, they simply can’t access the data on it. They can’t boot it. They can’t even access the files if they take out the disk and try to mount it from another system.”

File-level encryption has a role to play too. “We attach files to emails, copy data to USB sticks and pass them around – there are lots of ways to share data, and as end users we do it instinctively,” Merry said. “For example, let’s say I copy an Excel spreadsheet from work onto my USB stick so I can work on it at home. A USB stick is easy to lose – you pull your keys out of your pocket and the USB stick falls out. As far as the law is concerned, if someone can pick up that USB stick and potentially make use of the data contained on it, that’s a data breach. It’s the same type of situation if you’re storing potentially secret or proprietary information on Dropbox, because you don’t know who might access it.”

“While your employees may not be carrying around top-secret blueprints, their systems may still hold data that needs protecting” It’s worth thinking about tablets and smartphones too. “With company devices, you may choose to manage all aspects of security, including the apps users install,” noted Merry. “Or, you can have a BYOD scenario. In that case you can say: ‘It might be your device, but if you’re going to have company data on it then you need to protect it.’ Devices such as mobile phones have built-in encryption that you can activate.”Desktops and servers are rather less likely to fall out of pockets, but if you’re unlucky enough to be the victim of a burglary, you could be looking at a data-loss disaster. “You do get thefts from businesses – even large companies with big data centres,” warned Sian John. “And encryption is so easy to turn on now that it’s worth doing.”

Encryption can also provide a secondary benefit when it’s time to retire old hardware. “When you go to recycle your computers at the end of their life, make sure you’ve destroyed data on them,” added John. “If you’re using encryption, it’s easy to wipe that drive so that it isn’t recoverable.”The design is a two part construction, which you should be careful not to lose or break the upper part, although you shouldn't need to take it apart very often as you can both charge and sync the phone in the case. Unlike the Apple Smart Battery Case it does feature an on/off button and four LED lights to indicate remaining case power. The case is backup power, as the iPhone uses its own battery first, and then relies on the case for a recharge. In some ways we prefer this method as it's nice to know you have a full backup in the case while the phone runs down. That said, we do prefer it when charging both case and phone at the same time for the phone to be charged first and battery case second. The PEMOTech iPhone 7 battery case is supposed to charge itself first, then the phone. In practice we found that it often charged itself, but then forgot to charge the phone afterwards. That means you either have to immediately use the case to charge the phone, or charge the phone seaparately when near a power source. It's a pain but it works.
