The Satellite Pro NB10-A’s removable battery, connectivity and build quality are all big plus points, but the identically priced Asus VivoBook X200CA serves up better ergonomics and faster performance in a much prettier package.Thankfully, this isn't how most of my telephone conversations end, but the call I received last Friday was different. Just after lunch, my house phone rang and on the other end was a gentleman in a call centre asking about my computer: was I the owner of the computer in my home? Yes. And was I responsible for the maintenance of it? Once again, I told him I was. "Ok, hello madam. I'm calling from Microsoft Windows Security. We've received a report from your computer that it's infected with a virus that can steal your details and even spread to your mobile phone, iPad or other computers." This is the standard opening gambit for a particularly cruel ruse that allows the caller, who is actually a malicious actor, to take control of your computer and steal your data. I say it's cruel, because it's reliant on the person not knowing much about computers or security, and abuses their trust to actually make them the gateway for the whole attack.
While I've known about this scam for a few years, this was the first time I'd actually come across it first hand. One of the groups vulnerable to this type of scam is the elderly, especially as they're more likely to be at home during the day when the calls tend to come. Taking advantage of this, and knowing I'd only said two words so far, I put on my best old lady voice and made myself the ideal victim. "Oh dear, this sounds very serious - I'm rather worried," said my new persona, Scam Gran. The caller assured me it was indeed very serious and that I needed to go to my computer immediately. It wasn't and Scam Gran wasn't quite sure how to turn it on either. The young man helpfully talked me through powering up my PC and determining whether I had a laptop or a desktop. Having turned on my computer, the caller paused to ask me if I used Microsoft Windows - I assured him I did (this may not have been entirely true) - and how old my computer was.
"Oh, I'm not sure, I think it's three years old. Yes, because that's when I got it for my birthday," said Scam Gran. I imagine it must be quite tiresome for scammers who have to deal with people vulnerable to this kind of attack, as the sense of urgency in his voice was now tinged with an edge of irritability. After explaining to Scam Gran what a browser was ("I'm not very good with technology") and how to open Internet Explorer, he gave me a URL to visit that, he said, would allow him to disinfect my computer. "In the address bar at the top, type in www.teamviewer.com," he said. It's worth noting at this point that TeamViewer is a legitimate piece of software, used by both consumers and businesses as a support tool. What happened next isn't the fault of the company but, rather, a corruption of the way the company's software is intended to be used.

"What can you see now on the page?" asked the scammer. "There's picture of a lady with a box," replied Scam Gran. The scammer wasn't impressed. Having established I was actually supposed to be looking at the words in the top right hand corner, I was guided to the "previous versions" download page and told to download version 7 of TeamViewer Quick Support. I'm not quite sure why version 7 in particular was required - possibly because of the age of my fictional computer. However, I do know why I was told to download Quick Support. The software is a lightweight version of TeamViewer, intended for quick customer support, and is a temporary file. The full version, by contrast, remains permanently installed on the person's computer and also allows two-way communication. Dutifully, Scam Gran downloaded TeamViewer Quick Share to her computer, and, as instructed, clicked "yes" to run the programme and "yes" to allow it to make changes to my computer.
I was then presented with a randomly generated nine-digit ID number and four-digit password, and the real fun began. The first time the scammer tried to get the details, Scam Gran had accidentally closed the window. On re-opening it, she handed over her ID and password, but got confused and got the first two numbers mixed up (she didn't have her glasses on). This number mixing went on for another two attempts, before the scammer sternly reprimanded Scam Gran. The Pavilion X360 isn’t just another boring me-too laptop. This £349 Windows 8 hybrid bravely takes on Lenovo’s double-jointed Yoga range with a twin-hinge convertible design and one of Intel's Bay Trail Celeron CPUs. See also: what's the best laptop you can buy in 2014?It’s certainly a distinctive-looking hybrid, and it feels like a high-quality piece of kit. Available in eye-popping red or a more subdued silver, the Pavilion X360’s soft-touch plastics have a pleasantly rubbery feel, and the sturdy base and lid are connected by a strong-feeling hinge. HP’s done a grand job of squeezing in a fine keyboard and usable touchpad, too.
Push the display backwards and – as with Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga 2 – it’s possible to use the HP in a variety of positions. The display can swivel all the way back into tablet mode, or fold around to turn the base into a makeshift stand. It works well, but it feels unwieldy in tablet mode – it’s 22mm thick, and, at 1.48kg, it’s immensely heavy by tablet standards. An Intel Celeron N2820 CPU joins forces with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD. This low-power, dual-core processor provides a usable level of performance – in our Real World Benchmarks, the HP scored 0.36 – but in combination with a mechanical hard disk it suffers the occasional bout of hiccuping and grinding. Battery life is poor, too: the Pavilion X360 lasted only 4hrs 25mins in our light-use test. It’s the X360’s touchscreen that really lets the side down. To keep the budget in check, HP has used a low-quality TN panel, and it shows. The maximum brightness of 202cd/m2 is mediocre, and the contrast ratio of 217:1 is disappointing even by budget standards. For a display designed to be viewed from every angle, the washed-out colours, low brightness and narrow viewing angles are a terrible combination.

Even though the price is appealing, the HP Pavilion X360 suffers from too many compromises. The Asus VivoBook X200CA offers similar performance and battery life for £50 less, while the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 2 11in shows exactly how a hybrid should be made for £500. It is a promising effort, though, and a better quality screen would transform the HP’s appeal. The world's biggest PC maker, Lenovo, has recorded a 19% jump in second quarter profits, in a market where making a profit at all is an achievement.Lenovo, which overtook HP as the world's biggest PC manufacturer last year, posted net income of $262 million in Q2, beating most analysts' estimates. However, revenue fell short of expectations, knocking the company's share price down a little.Nevertheless, Lenovo remains the biggest success story in the PC industry. HP's slim profits continue to decline quarter on quarter, after a couple years of multi-billion dollar losses. The company recently announced it was spinning off its PC and printers division to give more focus to its profitable enterprise business. http://www.batteries-pc.com/hp.html http://www.batteries-pc.com/hp.html
Dell recently returned to private hands, after years of financial bloodshed. Michael Dell said earlier this week that the company had been reinvigorated since going private last autumn, and has recently posted an increase in PC shipments. The other members of the top five are Asian manufacturers Acer and Asus. Acer recorded a small profit in the last quarter, after suffering heavy losses in 2013, which prompted the company to reorganise and shed 7% of its staff.Asus remains profitable, but reported its lowest sales figures in five quarters earlier this summer, blaming weak demand for laptops and tablets.Apple, which sits just outside the top five, is hugely profitable, but most of its income is derived from iPhones and iPads, rather than Macs.Lenovo's success is all the more remarkable for the way it has bucked the trend in desktop PC sales, not only laptops and hybrids.
Lenovo’s desktop PC shipments grew 6.4% worldwide year-on-year, compared to an overall industry decrease of 2.3%. The company now claims to have 18% of the desktop PC market, while desktops account for more than a quarter of the company's overall revenue.Budget laptops rarely set the pulse racing, but the Acer Aspire E1 excites purely by virtue of its price. For a mere £350, this 15.6in laptop touts a Core i3 CPU, 750GB hard disk and all the essential trimmings. See also: what's the best laptop you can buy in 2014?Physically, it’s unmistakably a low-cost laptop. The plain, plastic chassis is finished in matte black, and every edge softens into an inoffensive curve, without a sharp edge in sight. It isn’t completely devoid of style, however: the black plastics are enlivened by the sparkle of tiny flecks of silver beneath the surface. And despite the plastic construction, build quality is solid throughout. There’s a little flex and creak in the 2.2kg chassis if you manhandle it, but it’s pretty sturdy by budget standards.
