IBM ThinkPad X60s Battery

The T200TA’s 11.6in display has a low resolution of 1,366 x 768, but Asus has spent the cash where it really matters, shelling out for a good-quality IPS panel. Although brightness tops out at a modest 215cd/m[sup]2[/sup], a contrast ratio of 836:1 ensures that images have plenty of detail, from the darkest shadows to the brightest highlights, and viewing angles are wide too. If we had to make a criticism, we’d note that the panel fails to reproduce the richest, most saturated colours, as it covers only 63.9% of the sRGB colour gamut, but overall it’s still an attractive display. With one of Intel’s quad-core Bay Trail CPUs powering the whole show, the T200TA feels pretty spritely most of the time, and an Overall score of 0.37 in our Real World Benchmarks reflects more than enough poke for everyday office and internet applications. However, if you were hoping to use that 11.6in screen for multitasking, you may be disappointed. Asus has trimmed costs by partnering a 32-bit installation of Windows 8.1 with a frugal 2GB of RAM, and there’s no way to add extra memory. As a result, the system can easily get bogged down, resulting in performance that’s sluggish even by Atom standards.

On the upside, battery life is as good as you’d expect for an Atom-powered device. With the screen dimmed to 75cd/m[sup]2[/sup] and the Wi-Fi turned off, the T200TA flicked through a variety of web pages and documents for 10hrs 40mins before needing a trip back to the mains. Unlike the T100, the T200TA charges only via the supplied mains charger – charging over USB isn’t supported. At this price, we never expected the T200TA to be the last word in ergonomic design, but it’s a great little hybrid that does a cracking impression of a budget 11.6in laptop, and doesn’t make a bad tablet either. The display in particular is significantly better than the screens you’ll find on most budget laptops. The Atom processor and 2GB of RAM may not provide enough headroom for everyone’s needs, but as a cheap and versatile Windows device, the Transformer Book T200TA takes some beating.Launched alongside the Venue 11 Pro Windows 8.1 tablet, the XPS 11 is the first hybrid of that size to feature what Dell calls a "quad-HD display", with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution.

The Dell XPS 11 is similar to the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, with the keyboard folding back to let the device be used as a tablet or in presentation mode. The XPS 11 weighs 1.1kg and is 15mm thick, features a Haswell Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, and runs Windows 8.1. It's avvaialble with 80GB, 128GB or 256GB SSD, and supports dual-band Wi-Fi. The XPS 13 and XPS 15 also feature high definition displays, with the 13.3in featuring a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 and the 15.6in offering 3,200 x 1,800.The XPS 15 weighs 2kg, features a fourth-generation Intel Core i5 chip with an option to upgrade to an i7, 16GB of RAM and Nvidia graphics. It's available with a 500GB or 1TB hard drive, or a 512GB SSD. The XPS 13, meanwhile, weighs 1.3kg, features a range of Intel Haswell chips and Intel HD 4400 graphics, 4GB or 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB or 256GB SSD.The XPS 15 will be available from 18 October in the US from $1,500, while the XPS 11 and XPS 13 will arrive in November, both from $1,000. UK availability and pricing is yet to be confirmed.

In this age of mobility, few things are more important to us than Internet access. Getting online when you’re out and about is paramount, and while there’s no shortage of wireless hotspots available, connecting to them isn’t always as easy as it should be.Wouldn’t it be great if you could just open up your laptop and get connected quickly and easily, no matter where you might be? With the latest HP mobile devices running Windows 8, you can do just that. The aluminium device follows the lead of the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11, by converting from a laptop, to a flat tablet slate, or a "viewer mode" by flipping the display backwards. The top of the lid has a hinge which folds flat when the device is in tablet mode, and is used as a stand in viewing mode. The hybrid device runs Windows 8 on an Intel Core processor (up to an i7), and features Nvidia graphics and up to 8GB of RAM. For storage, models offer up to 512GB of SSD or up to 1TB of hard disk space.

The Sony VAIO Fit comes in three sizes - 13.3in, 14in, and 15.5in - and the largest has the option for a display with 2,880 x 1,620 resolution, while the others offer 1,920 by 1,080. All three have backlit keyboards and come with front-facing cameras, while the smaller model also features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera - clearly Sony doesn't think anyone wants to snap photos with a 15.5in tablet. The hybrids also come with 802.11abgn wireless, two USB 3 ports, Bluetooth 4, an SD card slot and NFC, and the 13.3in version comes with a stylus. The smallest model weighs 1.2kg, while the largest weighs in at 2kg. Prices weren't immediately available, but Sony said the hybrid devices would be available in Europe this autumn. In this age of BYOD, cloud and flexible working, you might think that people in the UK would jump at the chance to work from home – but you would be wrong. New research from Dell and Intel, released today, has shown we would rather come into the office than stay at home, even though the technology to do so is already available.Less than half of respondents said they felt equally or more productive at home as in the office, and 80% said they felt home working was a perk, rather than a standard expectation. This is reflected by the fact that 96% of people who responded said they spent at least some of their working time in the office, while nearly three quarters said they spent more than 75% of their time there. Margaret Franco of Dell told PC Pro the company was surprised by the results.

"There were a lot of things that stood out and we thought 'that can't be right?' - but that's why we do these surveys, to understand what end users really need," she said. Amid possible explanations such as cultural norms and traditions, as well as perceptions of home workers, one key point raised by respondents was the importance of “real”, rather than virtual communication. “The notion of collaboration in person is important [to the UK],” Franco said. “People want to communicate.” Stuart Dommett of Intel added: "People, being people, naturally want to find [ways to] talk to people and that collaboration will always spark ideas." Even when it’s not possible to carry out a face-to-face interaction, people in this country would prefer to pick up the phone and talk to someone, rather than send a message over IM. However, Dommett argued that even face-to-face collaboration is becoming increasingly "technology enabled", through current technologies like interactive whiteboards and screens, as well as whatever replaces them in the future. We’re also rather enamoured of desktop computers – or at least our employers’ IT departments are. 71% said they normally use a desktop at work, and indeed that they prefer them to alternatives like laptops or hybrids. The research also shows that, for 46% of the UK working population, this is the only device they use for work.

However, Dommett said this doesn’t necessarily go against the idea of working “anywhere, any time, from any device”. “Mobility isn’t about remote working,” said Dommett. “Cloud computing and different devices are there to give a different experience.”Indeed, good provision of technology and a wide breadth of devices available will make us more likely to stay in a job, according to 40% of respondents. Despite our love for the office, UK workers recognise there are certain benefits to working from home, including reduced stress (40%), less time spent behind the wheel (52%) and more time spent in bed (22%). But while spiritual and mental wellbeing may benefit from us not being in the office, our bodily fitness may not do so well. Home workers in the UK are more likely to snack during the day and, perhaps surprisingly, less likely to exercise as well. Breaking the specs down, as a laptop it features a full Qwerty keyboard and touchpad, 12.5in HD IPS display, touchscreen support, an Intel Core processor and up to 1TB of internal storage.

It also features a dedicated button that lets it switch between Windows 8.1 and Android 4.4 KitKat, providing the smartphone is docked.Un-docking it from the keyboard turns it into an 800g tablet with 128GB of storage. Once again, users can move between the two operating systems, although this time it's via a tap on the screen. The 5in, 140g phone, which is only 11mm thick, also runs Android 4.4 KitKat and is, according to Asus, the first 4G smartphone to be powered by an Intel Atom quad-core processor. It also comes with a 2,500mAh battery that provides up to ten hours of web browsing time. There is no word yet on when the device will be available outside of Taiwan or how much it will cost. The Transformer Book T300 Chi is another laptop/tablet hybrid device, which the company claimed has the "world's thinnest 12.5in detachable tablet display" at 7.3mm thick. http://www.batteries-pc.com/acer.html http://www.batteries-pc.com/acer.html

The Transformer Book Flip is Asus' answer to the Lenovo Yoga. Running Windows 8.1, users can position the laptop's screen at any angle from zero and 360 degrees, the company claimed. However, in order to avoid unwanted input, the keyboard and touchpad are locked when the device is in tablet mode, it added. The Transformer Book Flip comes in two screen sizes - 13.3in and 15.6in. Both models have two processor options, Core i3 and Core i5 for the 13.3in, and Core i5 and Core i7 for the 15.6in. The devices also feature up to Full HD 1920 x 1080 touchscreen displays. Both models of the Transformer Book Flip will be available from the end of June. Prices start at £449 for the 13.3in Core i3 model and £499 for the Core i5. The 15.6in Core i5 starts at £599 and the Core i7 starts at £699.Asus also revealed two new models of its Transformer Pad hybrid, the TF103C and the TF303CL. Both run on Intel's 64-bit Atom Z3745 quad-core processor and measure 257.4 x 178.4 x 9.9mm.

The TFC103C, which is available in black or white, has 1,280 x 800 HD display with IPS technology. It also features dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and integrated GPS and GLONASS receivers. The TF303CL, which is available in blue or gold, has a Full HD 1,920 x 1,200 IPS display. Unlike the TFC103C, it has 4G connectivity. It also has an HDMI output and support for Miracast, meaning it can be linked to a larger, external display if desired. The TF103C will be available online from 19 June and in-store from mid-July. It will retail for £239 when bundled with the keyboard dock, or £199 for the pad only.A third mobile device revealed by Shih was the Fonepad 8, an 8in tablet with built-in 3G connectivity and the ability to make and receive phone calls. It has a 5.06mm bezel and HD 1,280 x 800 IPS display. It runs on a 64-bit Intel Atom Z3560 1.8GHz quad-core processor and has dual SonicMaster front speakers.
