HP Envy X2 13 - top-down view of keyboard The keyboard itself is pretty good. We’re not fans of the vertical strip of Page Up, Page Down, Home and End buttons on the far-right edge – the arrangement makes it far too easy to press these buttons by mistake – but the widely spaced, backlit keys provide just the right amount of feedback, and the soft leather wristrest makes for comfy typing. The touchpad, however, made us glad there’s a touchscreen to use; it’s far too sensitive to taps, yet feels oddly laggy and unresponsive to cursor movements, and it often registered left-clicks when we were simply trying to scroll the mouse cursor across the screen. We can only hope that a driver update might improve matters.Otherwise, the Envy x2 suffers from several of the same usability issues as Microsoft’s Surface Pro tablets. The x2 is fine on a desk: the kickstand provides an excellent range of movement, and the large keyboard and screen make for a workable laptop substitute. However, things go downhill rapidly once you try to use the Envy x2 in other situations. The heavy tablet and lightweight keyboard make for an unstable combination on your lap, and the sheer size of the Envy x2 makes it a poor travelling companion.
Thankfully, there are glimmers of quality here and there. The Envy x2’s display is great. This stretches a Full HD resolution across a 13in IPS panel, and it bursts with dynamic, punchy images. Brightness tops out at 392cd/m2, contrast reaches 1,095:1, and the panel covers a very respectable 93% of the sRGB colour gamut. It’s by far the HP’s strongest suit.Behind the scenes, Intel’s Core M-5Y10 CPU provides the Envy x2’s processing power, a chip that sounds rather frugal on paper. It runs at a base frequency of only 800MHz, boosts up to 2GHz and has a TDP of a mere 4.5W. In truth, we were primed for disappointment since the faster-clocked Core M-5Y70 in the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro turned in some very mediocre numbers.
HP Envy X2 13 - Front head-on Happily, the x2 confounded our expectations. In our Real World Benchmarks, the combination of the Core M, 4GB of memory and 128GB SSD turned in an Overall score of 0.59, which is well ahead of the Yoga 3 Pro’s 0.45 and not far off the performance of Ultrabooks and rival hybrids with Core i5 Haswell hardware. It’s clear that, with the right hardware design, Intel’s Core M has a surprisingly healthy performance kick. What’s more, the fanless design means there isn’t a whisper of noise, even when the Envy x2 is working flat out.Battery life is more limited by the demands of the Envy x2’s display than the power-frugal CPU, but the HP acquitted itself reasonably well in our tests. With the display brightness set to 120cd/m2, our looping video test saw the Envy x2 chew through its capacity in a reasonable 6hrs 8mins. We were hoping for more, however: given the Core M CPU, this is by no means a record-breaking performance.

The Envy x2 wants for little when it comes to connectivity. There are two full-sized USB 3 ports, one on either edge of the tablet, a full-sized HDMI output and a microSD slot. Speedy 802.11ac wireless networking is the order of the day, and Bluetooth 4 is included, too. The front-facing 2-megapixel webcam isn’t stunning, but there’s detail enough for video chats over Skype. The final disappointment here is the Envy x2’s speakers: despite taking up a sizable chunk of space either side of the display, sound quality is middle of the road. There’s plenty of volume, and enough energy to make music and movie soundtracks listenable, but there’s a harsh quality to the sound that made several of our test tracks sound far too edgy and thin, and the lack of low-end and mid-range warmth sees basslines disappear almost completely. We expected far better. After a few days with the Envy x2, we kept returning to one question: what’s it actually good at? It’s too big and unwieldy to make for a tablet we’d want to use with any regularity, and the clip-on keyboard is borderline impossible to use on your lap or in most situations when you’re travelling. The Envy x2 is most at home when it’s sitting on a desk, but even in this scenario we found the touchpad to be a regular aggravation.
Lenovo has packed the N20p with a superb array of features and core hardware – you couldn’t ask for more. Wireless connectivity includes both superfast 802.11ac and energy-efficient Bluetooth 4, while physical connections include one USB 2 and one USB 3 port, an SD card reader, and a micro-HDMI output. Only the webcam is a little disappointing: the over-eager noise reduction leaves images starved of detail and looking like the lens has been smeared with Vaseline.Meanwhile, the 2.16GHz Intel Celeron N2830, 16GB of storage and generous 4GB of RAM are a solid combination and provide enough power for the lightweight demands of Chrome OS. It’s no speed demon, mind. Since the Celeron processor uses a dual-core Bay Trail-M architecture, it’s a little slower than rival Chromebooks that use the Haswell-based Celeron 2955U chip, such as the Toshiba Chromebook 13.3in or the Acer Aspire C720. Battery life is good, however, and with the screen calibrated to a brightness of 120cd/m2 and with Wi-Fi turned off, the N20p lasted 7hrs 8mins in our 720p movie-playback test.
Sadly, the Lenovo’s middling build quality does impact upon usability. The keyboard looks identical to every other Chromebook, but there’s some flex in the keyboard panel, and the short-travel keys lack feel and responsiveness. The spacious layout minimises serious issues, but we’ve certainly typed on better. The buttonless touchpad works just fine, however, depressing with a solid, muffled click and responding reliably to two-fingered scrolling gestures.Flip the N20p around into stand mode and you’ll need to rely on Chrome OS’s onscreen keyboard. This takes a few seconds to fire up the first time you use it, but it works well enough to make light work of typing in web searches and the like – thankfully, Lenovo has dotted rubber feet around the N20p’s keyboard to stop it sliding around while you’re prodding the touchscreen. The Lenovo’s 11.6in touchscreen functions work without fuss, and there are no issues with responsiveness or lag. Sadly, though, the TN panel serves up distinctly mediocre image quality.

The narrow vertical viewing angles are the most obvious flaw, requiring the display to be positioned just so to stop images darkening or washing out completely. Brightness hits a usable 210cd/m2, but contrast peaks at an unimpressive 298:1; colour accuracy is poor, too, with images lacking in vibrancy and tainted with a bluish cast. Even by the low standards of rival Chromebooks, it’s nothing to get excited about. In all fairness to the N20p, there aren’t many Chromebooks with genuinely good displays – the only model we’ve tested with a quality IPS display is the HP Chromebook 11, and that isn’t as fast as this machine. With that in mind, there are reasons to warm to the Lenovo. The design is attractive, the flexible hinge and responsive touchscreen are a great pairing, and the array of features and connectivity is excellent. Sadly, though, the middling keyboard and iffy display mean that we’d have to think long and hard about choosing it over the HP Chromebook 11; with a few tweaks, though, it could have been a real contender.
Portable, powerful and affordable are three words that rarely go together when one thinks of gaming laptops, but that’s exactly what Chillblast has served up with the Defiant 2 Mini. Like squeezing the engine of a supercar into a hatchback, the Defiant 2 Mini unites a quad-core Intel CPU with Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 860M and shoehorns the pair into a compact 13.3in laptop that costs only £899 inc VAT.The Defiant 2 Mini isn’t technically one of Chillblast’s own creations. Instead, Chillblast has employed a barebones laptop chassis from Clevo – the 13.3in W230SS – and outfitted it with a gaming-capable specification and a two-year collect-and-return warranty. As is so often the case with generic laptop designs, the W230SS’s plastic shell doesn’t thrill like the best of the big brands. However, the chassis’ aggressively contoured figure is definitely more stealth bomber than supermarket special. Although the lid flexes rather too easily, the base feels sturdy and, best of all, the whole package is eminently portable by the standards of most gaming laptops – weighing 2.1kg and measuring 34mm thick, this isn’t a laptop that requires a suitcase-sized bag to be transported to and fro. http://www.batteries-pc.com/dell.html http://www.batteries-pc.com/dell.html
What really excites, though, is what’s on the inside. The CPU in question, an Intel Core i7-4710MQ, is one of Intel’s tweaked “Haswell Refresh” chips, which trumps its predecessor (the Core i7-4700MQ) by bumping the stock and Turbo Boost speeds up by 100MHz. Alongside it, Nvidia’s top-of-the-range GeForce GTX 860M makes a perfect ally for the Intel quad-core CPU, and to round off the specification Chillblast has employed 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a 1TB hybrid SSHD.The Chillblast’s specification is almost identical to other recent gaming laptops that have passed through the PC Pro labs, but that small clock-speed increase helps push it out in front of the rest. In our Real World Benchmarks, the Defiant 2 Mini scored an impressive 1.02; enough to put it just ahead of its closest rival, the Gigabyte P34G v2. Gaming performance is startlingly quick for a 13.3in laptop. Even with our Crysis benchmark cranked right up to Full HD resolution and Very High detail settings, the Chillblast turned in a smooth average frame rate of 42fps. It was only once we started playing more demanding titles, such as Crysis 3, that we needed to nudge the detail settings down or drop below the laptop’s native Full HD resolution.
Regardless of whether you’re working or gaming, though, that Full HD display provides sumptuous image quality. Brightness peaks at a gleaming 352cd/m[sup]2[/sup], contrast tops out at 895:1 and, since the IPS panel covers 86.2% of the sRGB gamut, images drip with rich, saturated colours. The satin anti-glare finish is great, too, giving images a similar punchiness to a gloss panel without the aggravating reflectivity. The only thing that isn’t exceptional is colour accuracy. The panel’s average Delta E of 3.7 is perfectly acceptable, but the maximum Delta E of 7.8 testifies to the panel’s tendency to darken colours and crush the very darkest tones into black. Is your computer running slowly, crashing frequently and generally behaving a little oddly?
