Clearly, 2GB of RAM is teetering on the borderline of acceptability for a Windows machine running at 1080p; however, running Photoshop on such a system is an edge case anyway. There are other, more practical concerns. Although there’s a surprising amount of connectivity here – around the edges you’ll find a full-sized USB 2 port and a microSD slot that will accept up to a stated maximum of 64GB – in practices, you may need to work around the Micro PC’s limitations. For instance, you’ll want to keep a USB keyboard and mouse handy for use in emergencies (or if you put the machine into flight mode by accident), and you’ll certainly need these to hand when setting up the Micro PC initially.A powered USB hub will come in hand, too, if you want to add an external disk for storage or backup – and with only single-band, single-stream 802.11n on board, wireless speeds will be limited, so it may be a good idea to invest in a USB Ethernet adapter as well.
The big question concerns the target market for the Micro PC. The manufacturer was vague when asked about this, at first saying merely that the device is “for anyone who needs to save space” – or who wants an ultra-portable PC to carry around with them. One practical suggestion was that customers might want to team the Micro PC with one of Hannspree’s touchscreen monitors. Plug it into the 23in HT231HPB touchscreen (around £150 inc VAT), and it turns into an ultra-cheap, sub-£300 all-in-one machine. And we can certainly see the appeal for other fields of work, too, as a backup machine for when you’re working on the road, for instance. In a modern office it could serve as the ultimate hot-desking tool. IT suport workers might also find a use for it, and teamed with something such as XBMC, it could serve as an ultra-low-profile media centre PC.
Ultimately, while we love the idea of the Hannspree Micro PC, it’s a bit of a niche product. Most people won’t need a PC they can fit in their pocket, and anyone for whom this might be tempting would do well to first consider either a Windows with Bing laptop such as the Toshiba CL10-B – or one of the wave of ultra-cheap Windows tablets that’s emerging onto the market. While you could never accuse the Micro PC of being overpriced, these devices represent even better value for money.Toshiba, it turns out, is like one of those kids that sits back and waits, checking to see who and what’s popular before joining the gang. Only now that sales of devices are starting to pick up has it signed up to Google’s Chromebook vision, and its first entry looks great on paper: a 13in display, full-width keyboard, nine-hour battery life and a design that looks precisely like a MacBook from afar.

To emphasise this last point, just take a look at one of Toshiba's official photos - such as the one we've used above.Once you look closer, both physical and metaphorically, it’s clear that this is no MacBook and that compromises have been made to hit the £249 inc VAT price. As can be seen if you click on our photo - left - the material is 100% plastic and feels it. Likewise it’s clear that this is a cheap keyboard with a very average touch and feel. If you’re working on that novel, you’ll probably want to move onto another laptop. We’re delighted to say, though, that Toshiba has made no such compromise when it comes to the screen. And this, for most people, is far more important. It can’t match the vibrancy of the top-end Toshiba Kira, of course, but it’s impressive for a budget machine. The Toshiba Chromebook is also pretty light at 1.5kg, and one positive of a cheap laptop such as this is that you don’t care quite so much if it gets a little bashed. There is obvious picture distortion if you press on the back of the screen, but we’d actually be happy to sling this into any bag without a sleeve for protection.
You might be concerned about using Chrome when you travel because of the perceived need for an internet connection, but the key apps - email and Google Docs - keep working when you’re offline. Plus, Samsung claims a nine-hour battery life. That’s a fine time for such a light machine, and one reason is the ultra-low voltage Celeron processor, and supported by 2GB of RAM it proved fine for the lightweight demands of Chrome OS.There’s a 16GB SSD inside but Toshiba is heavily promoting the 100GB of free cloud storage on offer via Google Drive. Note that only lasts for two years, though. There’s an SD card slot for some local expansion, along with two USB 3 ports and an HDMI port.We only found one real annoyance when playing around with the Toshiba Chromebook and that was a jumpy mouse. While this is probably a bug that will be ironed out on final release, it’s something we’ll look out for when final production units arrive in our Labs.
So – as you can tell if you compare this first-look review with that of the Toshiba Kira – we can’t rustle up enormous amounts of enthusiasm for this machine. But then we come back to the question asked by a visitor to Toshiba’s stall while we were typing up this blog: “What’s the biggest selling point of the Chromebook?” he asked.Tablets and other Android devices are found on plenty of students' desks in the UK already, but now Google is looking to make it official with new classroom tools to make it easier to use Google Play apps and tablets when teaching. See also: How to survive Bett 2015 Google has an existing education platform – Google for Education – that's available free for schools, giving them unlimited Google Drive storage, classroom management tools, and its suite of cloud-based apps. Plus, Google Chromebooks have found most of their success in classrooms, with the cheap, cheerful and easy to manage cloud-based laptops nabbing as much as a fifth of the schools market in the UK, according to Futuresource Consulting stats.

Now, Google is pushing into tablets, with two new products: Tablets for Education and Google Play for Education. Unveiled at the Bett education technology show in London today, Tablets for Education makes tablets more like Chromebooks, particularly making them easier to manage. For example, they've been designed to be easier to do initial set up. If a teacher is handing out tablets to a class, they only need to set up a single device, and then use NFC to “tap” it to each of the other devices to get the same apps and settings.“We know it's been really difficult to set up tablets and use them in the classroom,” Liz Sproat, Google's head of education for EMEA, told Bett attendees in a presentation. So far, only two devices are available for Tablets for Education: the Nexus 7 and the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Education. Schools that already have the Nexus 7 can pay to get the Tablets for Education management tools from Google, but it's so far not available on any other devices. The Nexus 7 will cost £189 and is available immediately with the Tablets for Education platform, while the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Education will be available in March.
Google Play for Education is a dedicated store for educator-approved apps, with software designed specifically for the UK curriculum. It's divided into sections by student ages and includes primary-school content as well as apps for older classes, including GCSE revision tools. Teachers can select a free or paid-for app and have it automatically sent to the device of every student in the class – whether that's an Android tablet or a Chromebook. The goal behind pushing more mobile devices into education, Sproat said, is to make it easier to create classrooms where children can work collaboratively or independently, accessing the tools they need as they require. She showed an image of such a class, with happy students sprawled out with books, tablets and laptops – and no teacher to be seen. “Behind every classroom that looks like this, there's a network manager in the background up to their eyeballs in USB cables trying desperately to manage all the hardware, software and content and make it available in just the right format to every student and teacher,” she said, adding that's why so many schools are stuck with traditional classrooms. “It's kind of no wonder.” http://www.dearbattery.co.uk/acer.html http://www.dearbattery.co.uk/acer.html
Digital content is great for education, but many teachers around the world can't depend on electricity, let alone a wireless connection. To help, Intel has created its catchily-named Education Content Access Point. Looking a bit like a flattened router, this device holds a teacher's class materials, letting up to 50 students connect at once to download videos, presentations and other learning tools to their devices. It works with any file type, Intel said, and can be accessed with any laptop or tablet. If there's power and internet, it's similar to any cloud-based teaching platform. But, if the power goes out, it has a five-hour battery life, enough to continue the class and get around rolling blackouts. And, if the internet goes down - or a school simply doesn't have a connection - students can still access the content. The Education Content Access Point has its own built-in connectivity, so teachers can upload content via USB and share it out to students even without the internet. Because the device is light and portable, teachers can use it outdoors, in different classrooms and take it home with them for lesson planning.
