Fortunately, 3D Touch is due an upgrade soon, and although the current tranche of features is pretty slim, iOS 10 will bring more ways to use it. You can read our first impressions of iOS 10 here, but to summarise, the reach of 3D Touch is going to be significantly extended come September, when the next OS upgrade hits consumers’ smartphones.One example of this is the newly redesigned Control Center. As well as being divided up into panels, it’s now 3D Touch enabled. Press down on the flashlight button, for instance, and you’ll see a popup menu offering you three different levels of brightness:low, medium and high. The camera icon offers options to take a photo, capture a slow-mo video, take a selfie or record a normal video.
Push down on the calculator button and you’re presented with the option to copy your last result to the clipboard. Finally, if you hard press the timer icon you’ll see four preset options: one minute, five minutes, 20 minutes or one hour.3D Touch, even nearly a year after the launch of the iPhone 6s remains a work in progress, but Apple continues to back it, and soon it’ll become part of the fabric of the OS - something you can’t imagine you could ever do without.With Windows 10, Microsoft has managed to claw itself back from the clustercuss that was Windows 8.1, and since then its Windows Store has started to build up steam. It's already clear to see that there's been a rise in the number of apps available on the Windows Store and with Universal apps that catalogue is only going to grow.That's not to say the store is lacking apps right now though. It's an impressive piece of engineering, too. The long strips of metal concertina together to pivot the display back and forth, and while you can’t push the display all the way back flat, this does at least mean that there’s no danger of the Surface Book toppling backwards. Oh, and it looks great, too – just check out the photographs.Dab the undocking button on the top-right of the keyboard, or the onscreen icon in the Windows 10 taskbar, and the undocking procedure is accompanied by a tiny LED flitting from red to green, and the quiet whirr of the “muscle wire” mechanism releasing the tablet section. No, that’s not a typo: it really does use “muscle wire”. The Surface Book’s ingenious locking mechanism is actually made possible with strands of thin nitinol wire that contract when an electric current is applied. Once those strands release their grip, magnets still hold the tablet firmly in place, meaning it doesn’t fall backwards – you still have to make an effort to separate the two.
That done, you can either grab the tablet and wander off as you please, or you can spin it around 180 degrees and re-dock it to use the Surface Book in what Microsoft rather confusingly calls “tablet” mode. This latter scenario has two benefits: the first is you get the benefit of the discrete Nvidia GPU, secondary battery and connectivity in the keyboard; the second is you can choose whether to use the Surface Book as an on-desk graphics tablet or just a super-powerful Windows tablet that you can carry around. It’s worth mentioning, too, that in this mode, the Surface Book’s wide, rounded hinge is actually a good thing because it makes it easy to hold in one hand and simultaneously scribble with the other.

There are other reasons to choose this over the 4.7in iPhone 7, though, despite the fact that internally it's largely the same.It has a bigger battery, which in turn is larger than in last year's iPhone 6s Plus, and a bigger screen, although 5.5in has become a common screen size these days.The 5.5in screen is still "only" Full HD – which might not sound like much compared to the Quad HD displays on rival Android phones – but with that many pixels crammed into such a small space, it still looks fantastically sharp. And with Apple's new "Wide color" technology in place, it looks better than ever, with colour more vibrant and lush than ever before, but without sacrificing colour accuracy or overall quality. The Apple A10 Fusion processor still delivers fantastic performance in everything from Safari to games, but it's the combination of its two extra low-power cores and that bigger battery that makes the difference here, pushing battery life well beyond the single day of most smartphones.
The downside is that, thanks to the weak pound, the iPhone 7 Plus is more expensive than ever, and that's likely to put it out of reach for many, but make no mistake, the iPhone 7 Plus is one fabulous smartphone. There’s more to building a great laptop than you might imagine. You can combine cutting-edge materials and the fastest hardware, but it all means nothing if those elements don't gel together just so. That, ultimately, was the undoing of the original XPS 13. Undeterred, Dell has made some subtle tweaks to the formula, and it's these incremental improvements which have recast the XPS 13 as the best Windows ultraportable yet.When you’re spending a four-figure sum on a laptop, you want to feel you’re getting something special. Cool, gently curved slices of metal span the lid and underside, neatly sandwiching the soft-touch expanse of carbon fibre that pools around the backlit keyboard. The design of the XPS 13 is understated, modern and elegant in all the right ways.It’s solid, too, with not a hint of flex in its body, and it’s also surprisingly small for a 13.3in laptop. In fact, it’s a touch more compact even than HP’s 12.5in EliteBook Folio 1020, which is already pretty tiny as Ultrabooks go, and dramatically more slender and portable than Microsoft's exotic Surface Book. It’s not the very lightest ultraportable out there. At 1.2kg in its non-touch incarnation, and 1.29kg with the touchscreen, the XPS 13 isn’t as light as the Apple MacBook. However, those extra couple of hundred grams have been put to good use, and it’s safe to say that it knocks the MacBook and the Folio 1020 – and much of the competition, for that matter – flat in almost every other area.

It will also soon take in consumer devices such as wearables and the Xbox One, as well as interesting one-offs such as the Surface Hub – a whiteboard-sized conferencing system and display – and the HoloLens, Microsoft’s forthcoming augmented-reality headset.
