Sommige delen van de Computex zijn het podium voor allerhande vage Taiwanese, Chinese of andere Aziatische bedrijven die halffabrikaten uitstallen in een poging inkopers van bedrijven te strikken. De gebruikelijke incarnatie van onze lithium-ion-accu's, die in bijna alle apparatuur van smartphones tot laptops zit, stamt uit 1985. Een lithium-kobaltoxide-elektrode vormt de positieve elektrode en de negatieve elektrode is meestal een vorm van grafiet. Wie wel eens een batterij heeft gemaakt met een strip koper en een strip zink, weet dat je ook een geleidend materiaal ertussen nodig hebt, bijvoorbeeld een aardappel, een citroen of zout water.

Dat geldt voor een lithium-ion-accu evengoed en juist daar zit het gevaar. Het goedje dat als geleidend materiaal, of elektrolyt, dienstdoet, is nogal gevaarlijk. Het betreft opnieuw lithiumionen, maar dan in een oplosmiddel. Normaal is dat geen problem, maar als er water bij dat lithium komt, ontstaat er een heftige reactie. Wie wil weten hoe heftig, kan op YouTube filmpjes genoeg vinden van bijna exploderende accu's en ook de broekzakbranden van telefoons of bolstaande laptops getuigen van de reacties van lithium met vocht, bijvoorbeeld bij een doorboorde accu.

Om langer op je accu door te werken, is het aan te raden om de energie-instellingen van Windows na te lopen. Deze vind je in het configuratiescherm. Het beeldscherm is één van de grootste stroomverbruikers van je laptop. Zorg er voor dat je je beeldscherm snel uitschakelt. Schakel ook je schermbeveiliging uit.

Als je accu nauwelijks meer oplaadt of extreem snel leeg is, is vervangen de enige optie. De garantie op de accu is meestal slechts enkele maanden. De aanschaf van een compatibele accu is de voordeligste optie. Deze zijn niet alleen goedkoper, maar hebben vaak meer capaciteit dan de standaard accu van je laptopfabrikant.

The ThinkPad E560 doesn't offer the same level of durability as some competing laptops, and its screen could be more vibrant. But overall, it's a pretty good business notebook. If you've seen one ThinkPad, you've seen them all -- and the E560 is no exception. It's a large, smooth, black-plastic rectangle with rounded edges. The lid features Lenovo's logo on the lower left and the ThinkPad emblem on the top right. Unlike some of Lenovo's other recent machines, the E560 only comes in the company's trademark black.

Dell's Latitude E5570 is just the slightest bit smaller than the E560, at 14.8 x 9.9 x 0.9 inches but is heavier, at 5.6 pounds.

Lenovo ThinkPad E560The ThinkPad E560 has a port for just about everything. The left side features a lock slot, an Ethernet jack, a VGA port, an HDMI port and two USB 3.0 ports. On the right, you'll find a headphone/mic jack, a CD/DVD drive, a USB 3.0 port and a power jack. A SD card reader is located on the bottom lip on the front of the laptop.

Durability and Security Other than a spill-resistant keyboard, the ThinkPad E560 doesn't have any special durability features. It lacks the MIL-SPEC testing you'll find on competing systems or even Lenovo's other offerings. That means no protection against shocks, vibrations and extreme temperatures. The affordable ThinkPad 13, by comparison, is MIL-SPEC tested.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear loud, clear audio emanating from the E560's speakers. Given that the E560 is targeted at small and medium-size businesses, it makes sense that it doesn't support vPro for remote management. What you do get, though, is a Trusted Platform Module for encrypting biometric data and other sensitive information. There's also an optional fingerprint reader, which I found was easy to set up and use with Windows Hello for quick logins.
