German newspaper Handelsblatt, which has often produced reliable insider reports on the German auto industry, now cites insider sources saying that Volkswagen is about to present to its board of directors a plan to build a ‘multi-billion euro battery factory’.The publication suggests that the plan is likely to be approved.Just as annoyingly, the screen can only be positioned at two different screen angles but the second one, which leans farthest back, proved to be especially unstable. Neither will be comfortable for everyone. The keyboard lies flat and can’t be angled upwards like the Surface Pro 4’s keyboard – another limitation that will annoy many.At least the touchpad is better. It’s accurate and smooth, although its relatively small size makes pulling off some multitouch gestures more awkward than it should be. Plus, the keyboard cover does attach and pair magnetically with no need for Bluetooth.

Performance and battery life The TabPro S is fanless, and thus completely silent when in use, due to its Intel Core m3 processor which is power efficient and thus less prone to belching out excess heat. The m3-6Y30 chip can turbo boost from 900MHz to 2.2GHz when necessary. Paired with 4GB of memory, it fared well for a tablet in our benchmarks. It won’t completely replace your Core i5/i7 desktop or laptop if you also need to handle demanding jobs such as editing 4K video, manipulating RAW images and manhandling huge databases, but it’s fast enough for everything else.

Battery life was merely okay, lasting just under seven hours in our tablet video playback test. While respectable, both the 12.9in iPad Pro and the Surface Pro 4 managed to last a couple hours longer. The Galaxy TabPro S is a decent Windows 10 tablet, as long as you’re happy to live with the need for adapters if you want to use any wired peripherals. Its potential is somewhat hobbled though by the merely okay battery life and the absence of a stylus in the box.The real kicker, however, is the keyboard cover. It’s so bad that we wouldn’t want to use the TabPro S as a laptop unless we literally had no other choice. This hybrid is therefore best seen as a tablet that can be used for very occasional typing. If you’re hoping for Samsung’s triumphant re-entry into the UK laptop market, then this deformed hybrid will dash those hopes. What a lot of people don’t realise is that the Chromebook works offline. The operating system lets you manage files, move things from one computer to another, and save pictures from your digital camera just like any other laptop does. The offline functionality goes beyond the native OS features; the “web apps” are built with offline functionality now.

Unfortunately, we don't have the capability to measure power consumption in-house, and each manufacturer has its own way to present its numbers in the best light so we can't give a meaningful rundown of which has the best power economy. However, laptop users should take note of the rated power consumption of the SSDs in our group test, so that you know how much additional battery power you'll be using with an SSD. Do look out for manufacturers that provide accessible support with firmware updates possible on the platform of your choice. Most storage brands are still firmly routed in the Wintel world although with the decline of that platform more drive makers are making cross-platform upgrade tools available, in the form of bootable ISO images you can download from their support sites.

For laptop users specifically, you'll want to also know the exact dimensions of an SSD, as it might not fit into your laptop. All SSDs have a 2.5in form factor, and often have 69.9x100.1x7mm dimensions – ensure it will fit in your laptop before purchasing it. Best SSD 2016: how we test The PNY CS2211 240GB, Kingston KC400 SSDNow 512GB, Crucial BX200 480GB and Samsung 850 Evo 500GB were tested on the same Intel-based Windows 10 test rig. In addition, we ran the same benchmarks on our AMD-based rig and were shocked by the difference in performance. This budget system has an ASRock 970 Extreme3 Rev2.0 motherboard, with an AMD 970 Northbridge and AMD SB950 Southbridge.

We found the Samsung 850 Evo could only manage 405.3MB/s sequential read speed and 387.8MB/s write speed compared to 550.8 and 505.8MB/s on the Intel rig fitted with an Asus Sabertooth motherboard and the Intel Z77 chipset. This doesn’t mean you’ll see that performance on all AMD systems: we can only speak to our experience of this one PC. We also found that even on our Intel test rig, the ASMedia SATA 6Gb/s ports performed considerably worse than the Intel Z77 SATA 6Gb/s ports. Also, bear in mind that a 3Gb/s port will perform even slower, so you should ensure you’re your laptop or PC’s motherboard has a decent SATA controller in order for you to achieve the fastest possible speeds.

We would recommend benchmarking your SSD upon receiving it and making sure it's connected to the fastest SATA port available. Also check that all your motherboard drivers are up to date. When we tested the Crucial M550 last year it had a price/storage quotient of 37 pence per gigabyte. The latest MX200 is today available for around 30p/GB but other than that little has changed, except the newer drive has smaller process 16 nm flash and it measured slightly poorer in some tests. It's still a good drive but it's lost a little headway against higher performing or better value competitors like Samsung, SanDisk and OCZ. The Kingston HyperX Savage turned in a solid performance among the leaders of the current SSD pack, and the flashy looks may appeal to gamers and PC enthusiasts wishing to pimp up their rig. Its overall performance is just behind the best of Samsung and SanDisk, and with a price that exceeds these drives it just loses out on any overall recommendation. But it is a good SSD. This may be only OCZ's budget drive but it offers great performance with plenty of all-important support to provide peace of mind to anyone concerned about moving to solid-state storage. With its attractive warranty terms and great performance for the price it's easy to recommend.

The battery cell supply chain is close to the number one priority of any automaker looking to manufacture electric vehicles in high volume. Ever since the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal, VW has been under pressure to introduce more electric vehicles to its lineup and earlier this year, it announced plans to introduce 20 new electric vehicles through the group’s brands by the end of the decade. Tesla figured out the importance of being involved in the supply chain down to cell manufacturing after it first started discussing the ideal end-consumer with battery cell manufacturers and they were talking about ~7 cells per consumer; maybe a few cells in a laptop and a few more in other mobile devices.

But in Tesla’s view, the average battery cell consumer would not own 7 cells, but thousands which would almost all end up in the battery pack of an electric vehicle. It became clear that something drastic would need to happen with the battery industry in order for electric vehicles to be produced in high volumes.Through its mobile devices, Apple is one of the world’s biggest consumer of li-ion battery cells, but despite producing millions of units per year, it doesn’t consume anywhere close to Tesla’s battery cell needs even though Tesla only manufactures a few thousands vehicles per year.In order to make a battery pack for one of Tesla’s cars, you need the equivalent of about 4,000 iPhone 6 Plus batteries – meaning that to produce just 50,000 cars, which was about Tesla’s production in 2015, the automaker consumes more batteries than Apple did for the 170 million iPhones it sold during the last fiscal year.

This undeniable need to increase battery cell production in order to achieve higher electric vehicle production volume led to Tesla going ahead with its own manufacturing effort, in partnership with Panasonic, through the Gigafactory in Nevada.Tesla named the plant “Gigafactory” because it aims to produce gigawatt-hours worth of battery capacity per year. Full capacity is predicted to be achieved in 2020 and would see 35 GWh of battery cell production and 50 GWh of battery pack output with the difference in battery cells being imported from outside the plant.CTO JB Straubel recently hinted that these figures could be updated now that Tesla accelerated its Model 3 production ramp plans following higher than expected demand.

Considering Handelsblatt’s report mentions a “multi-billion euro battery factory” for VW, it would be safe to assume that the plant would aim to also have an output calculated in gigawatt-hours.So it seems we're left looking towards the next model, the Galaxy Note 6, and there's already evidence that Samsung may have flipped things back around and is intent on launching the next edition globally this time.In 2016 the Galaxy S7 EDGE+ is allegedly being ditched in favour of the Galaxy Note 6 which reports suggest is coming to the UK in August. Here’s an extract from the source of the news, Tech Radar: “Samsung has no plans to launch a Galaxy S7 Edge+ handset and will instead reinstate the Galaxy Note 6 as the brand's chief phablet in the UK. That’s according to a source high up at one of the UK's major networks who cited a ‘backlash from loyal Note fans’ as one of the chief reasons for the reverse decision.”

The Galaxy S6 EDGE+ has also apparently been a bit of a disappointment sales-wise as well in the UK since it went on sale last year. The Galaxy Note series has always been a huge banker for Samsung, so the decision not to bring the Note 5 here last year was likely one the company SERIOUSLY regrets.

As of May 13, more information has emerged from a VERY reliable source regarding the August launch of the Galaxy Note 6. According to Twitter tipster @evleaks, aka Evan Blass, the handset will arrive in the US on the week of August 15 specifically, although exactly which day within that week remains up-in-the-air. There isn't any info regarding a wider launch or a UK release, but considering earlier rumours have been pretty hot on the idea that it WILL land in the UK this time, and considering Samsung usually does pretty unified global rollouts when it launches major handsets internationally, we're expecting the UK date to be in a similar ballpark.

According to leaked details from Dutch website GSMHelpdesk's allegedly reliable sources, Samsung has been testing TWO Galaxy Note 6 prototypes and will be choosing between them with regard to which one will go forward as the production model. That's an important point, because the two differ on design. You may recall when Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 4 it also launched the Galaxy Note EDGE, a similarly specced handset with a limited distribution, and which was the first Samsung handset to feature the firm's now familiar curved edge Super AMOLED display.

The leaked info says that one of the prototypes for the Note 6 has a curved edge display, while the other is a regular flat screen, meaning that Samsung is trying to decide whether to make the Note 6 with curvy display edges or not, but it will NOT launch two variants one with and one without, as it did with the Note 4 generation and with the last two generations of Galaxy S flagship (S6/S7).

Reports inside 2016 following the launch of the Galaxy S7 series have shown that in terms of sales, shipments and pre-orders, the Galaxy S7 edge appears to be the far more popular of the two. In other words, edge displays are appreciated by Samsung's consumer base, so it's not a shock to find out that Samsung has taken action with this information. Introducing the edge variant to the Galaxy Note series once again certainly makes a lot of sense, particularly as it's a phone concept with added-functionality at the heart of its design ethos.

And Now We Look Forward To The Galaxy Note 6 Thankfully, this madness seems to now be behind Samsung. The company is making BIG plans for the future of its Note line and with the return of the Galaxy Note 6 to the UK in 2016 we couldn’t be happier. The Note is ALWAYS one of our most looked-forward-to releases.

The latest snippet of info emerging from the rumour mill isn't exactly earth-shattering, a minor detail truth be told, but still something worth commenting on, if only for the wider ramifications. With the launch of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, some were a little perplexed that Samsung had not fitted the flagship duo with the new USB Type-C connector; that's the type which uses a new cable and port design that allows the cable to be insterted either way round. This type of connector is slowly being phased in and has appeared on a few rival handsets, but Samsung has been slow on the uptake.

Why? Well one theory is that the firm was previously not keen on replacing the relatively new Samsung VR headset, what with VR being all-the-rage, and that device uses the old microUSB port design to connect with your phone; switching to the new type on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge may have pissed off a bunch of Gear VR owners. Anyway, the news on May 3 coming via SamMobile, is that the Galaxy Note 6 WILL feature Type-C USB, we can only assume that Sammy feels its been long enough to justify the switch now, but it will likely require the introduction of a new Gear VR headset with the new port type and the firm MAY launch this alongside the Galaxy Note 6.

Samsung Focus "Hub" Feature Rumoured According to a rumour emerging from reliable Samsung source SamMobile on May 11, Samsung intends to introduce a new productivity feature aboard the Galaxy Note 6, dubbed Samsung Focus. Samsung Focus is reportedly similar to the BlackBerry Hub seen aboard the last few devices released by the Canadian phone-maker, in the sense that it will act as an aggregation platform for communications and important information. At the very least, the sources say it will heap your emails in one place as well as calendar info, contacts, and notes - again very similar to the BB Hub and in the same way meaning that you don't have to hop from one app to the other all the time just to see new or important details. Samsung is also allegedly sticking very faithfully to the Google Material Design aesthetic in order to keep this a no-frill experience free from complications and distractions. The report says there may be additional features other than the ones mentioned, but there is no other info known at this stage. We're expecting Samsung Focus to be a central feature of the handset, so Samsung will probably hype it up quite a bit on launch, and with that being the case we suspect this isn't the last pre-launch leak of the feature before it arrives officially.
