You struggle to find a plug point in your cafe – but before you do, someone sends you another quality gif document and then suddenly… your computer conks out. Very annoying. But developers behind the browser Opera think they’ve got a solution – a ‘power-saving’ mode you can switch on when you’re running low on charge.
Apparently it can keep the laptop running 54 per cent longer compared to Google Chrome, and an extra 49 per cent compared to earlier versions of Opera. But if you’re wondering if it will work on your clapped-out iPhone, no such luck – it’s not available on mobile browsers yet. It works by simplifying code and keeping any animated themes to a minimum. It also reduces the activity on tabs you’ve kept open in the background, and cuts the frame-rate to 30 frames per second. Krystian Kolondra, senior vice president for engineering at Opera Software, said: ‘Our new power-saving mode will nudge you when the laptop starts to consume battery, and, when enabled, it can increase the battery life by as much as 50 per cent.’ The single biggest occupier of battery resources, day in and day out, is your laptop's display. More specifically, it's the that energy goes into powering the backlight that illuminates the pixels on your laptop's display.
The obvious move to extend battery life is then to lower your display's brightness. On either a Windows 10 laptop or an Apple MacBook, you can usually do this on the keyboard, but there are a couple other settings to change that will help automate the process. The tech world moves pretty fast and so do shifting opinions. If you searched for Chromebooks back in 2013, it seemed almost every stuffy article claimed they were useless and almost always missed the point entirely. By 2014 people were starting to take notice that Chromebooks were selling well, rapidly being picked up by schools, and consumers were enjoying their Chromebooks. That same year they overtook iPads in US schools. Indeed, they’re the ultimate school computer because they’re stateless, cheap, and have a physical keyboard.
Fast forward to this month and the Chromebooks now outsell Macs in the US (there isn’t an official word on European sales). So why did so many people initially hate the idea and why is it now so successful? Amusingly, it’s the very features that put people off Chromebooks that are driving their success today, which is a sure-fire sign of something released ahead of its time. The Chromebook is an unconventional laptop because users do almost everything within the Chrome browser (there is a desktop, taskbar, and file system). You can’t install applications to the hard-drive (technically you can, we’ll get to that), and a Chromebook is most useful when connected to the internet.
Gigabyte has published the product page for its Aero 14 gaming laptop on its New Zealand web site. German site WinFuture spotted the details, which are thought to have been published a bit early, ahead of an expected Computex reveal. This is an interesting laptop from Gigabyte which has definite niche appeal; it offers potent mobile hardware, great portability, and (rarely for such a device) claims to offer a capacious battery capable of a "full-day" of productivity.
As you would guess from the name, this is a 14-inch laptop. Gigabyte selected a 14-inch QHD 2560x1440 IPS Wide Viewing Angle Anti-Glare Display LCD to fit into this machine. The key performance components are a 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ (2.6GHz-3.5GHz) and a choice of Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M GDDR5 3GB or GTX 965M GDDR5 2GB and uses Nvidia Optimus tech to intelligently switch to the built-in Intel HD Graphics 530 when appropriate.
The Gigabyte Aero 14 comes equipped with 8GB or 16GB of DDR4 2133 and has two slots for a maximum RAM capacity of 32GB. Dual-storage is on offer here, with this laptop sporting 2 x M.2 SSD slots (Type 2280, supports NVMe PCIe X4 & SATA) for transfers of up to 2GB/s. Gamers will appreciate the auto-adjusting backlit keyboard which features individual macro keys.

Other key features are the inclusion of a USB 3.1(Type-C) port, as well as 3x USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, mini-DP, audio combo jack, SD card reader plus wireless communications via Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 4.1. An HD webcam and microphone is built-in. Audio playback isn't neglected as this laptop is equipped with a pair of 1.5W speakers, offering Dolby Digital Plus Home Theatre sounds.
Last but not least, this laptop sports a "94.24Wh huge battery capacity for full-day productivity," according to Gigabyte. This makes it a pretty good portable powerhouse, considering the fast mobile components and its weight and dimensions. The Gigabyte Aero weighs 1.89Kg and measures 335(W) x 250(D) x 19.9(H)mm. Hopefully we will see some more of this laptop following its expected official launch at Computex 2016 next week.
You have any problems with the ThinkPad x41 battery life of your laptop? If you work on your computer, then you might be stored throughout the day at home because your laptop signals a low VGP-BPS8A battery all the time.If your hard drive spins faster, the ThinkPad x300 battery less work. If you cut programs running in the background, it is sure to wring from which additional current. External devices such as WiFi and USB can easily empty your Sony pcga-bp2nx, So when you do things more important than other things, set your priorities and close other programs.
Sounds terrible? Read on. Here are our top 10 reasons to get a Chromebook. Many have been following the developments of the rumored Surface Book 2 by the Microsoft Corporation. First released in 2015, the Surface Book has been well-received by tech users and it has given the company bigger opportunities to expand its laptop venture. There were reports that the Surface Book 2 will arrive as early as next month. However, the latest rumors suggest that the public will not see the next generation of Surface Book until early next year.Earlier reports show that Microsoft is planning to formally introduce the new Surface Book 2 laptops to the public in June. While the electronics giant has not made any statements to confirm the ongoing development of the Surface Book 2, these reports should be taken lightly.
Although the rumored appearance of the Surface Book this year would coincide with another rumored big release by Apple, as the MacBook Pro 2016 model is reportedly under way.If the rumors are correct, the new MacBook Pro laptops will be unveiled during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year. The anticipated release of Surface Book 2 is seen to rival Macbook Pro 2016 in the market.A recent report came up as per the PC Tablet website stating that Microsoft will launch the new Surface Books in 2017 instead.According to the report, Surface Book 2 is no longer expected to arrive this year, although the extra time for more waiting may be worth it as the laptop is expected to boast much-improved specs feature compared to its predecessor.
For starters, the Surface Book 2 is reported to use the next generation of Intel Kaby Lake processors. The first Surface Book uses the Intel Skylake technology for a fast computer system. With Kaby Lake, the new Surface Book is expected to get even faster and the laptop's battery life will be optimized. Also, the Kaby Lake chipset will make the rumored 4K screen resolution of Surface Book 2 possible.Microsoft has been telling us that tablets are the future of personal computing since the original Surface and Windows 8, yet after all these years, very few Windows tablets have been able to hit the size, weight and battery life we’ve come to expect from Android and iOS tablets.
Samsung tried to change that with the TabPro S. We liked it a lot when we first tried it out, but naturally needed more time to assess the finer details of performance and battery life.Samsung’s designers have been at their best since the Galaxy S6, and that design language continues to be reflected here. An aluminum frame borders the tablet, and its back panel and keyboard cover come in either white or black. The keyboard cover itself is well-built too, with a high-quality leather build that snaps magnetically onto the back of the tablet with a satisfying click. Unlike the Surface line, you can only adjust the tablet to two angles, but unlike the iPad Pro, you don’t have to be an origami artist to figure out how to set the different positions.
Although the Tab ProS is a fairly striking tablet in its own right, the display is what really holds you attention, if only for being so different. That’s because it uses an AMOLED panel instead of a traditional LCD, one of very few PCs to use the technology. We’ve become used to the pure blacks of AMOLED on many smartphones, but it’s rare to see it on a screen this size, and it makes for a great night-time movie experience; shadows fade into true black, instead of the dark-grey letterboxing you normally experience with LCD panels at night. There are some caveats to the technology though: the Pentile subpixel structure means that you can notice some faint coloration green and purple coloration around text and lines if you look really closely, especially at the screen’s good-but-not-great 216 ppi.

The screen hue shifts to slightly purple or green hues off-center, and the colors are too vibrant to be accurate; it’s not the ideal choice for photo editing. I’m also slightly concerned about longevity – OLED panels are more prone to burn-in than LCD ones. However, my biggest issue with the TabPro S panel doesn’t have to do with the display tech at all: the screen’s automatic brightness is too conservative. The screen gets bright enough for use outdoors, but indoors Samsung seems to have calibrated the screen for conserving battery life.
Even at maximum brightness, the screen was generally dimmer than I preferred, and I found myself disabling the adaptive brightness setting when editing photos or watching video.Caveats aside, it’s still a great panel, and the blacks alone are worth it – it’s just not perfect. As for audio, the speakers are okay. Adequately loud for small rooms with decent stereo separation, but little bass presence. They seem to be design to spread sound out around a room more than directional audio – cupping your hands around the speakers makes for a big volume increase. Sound out of the headphone jack is also good, but nothing to write home about.
After spending more time with the TabPro S, I’ve come to conclude the typing experience is decent for a keyboard this thin, but not great in the grand scheme again. I’d rank it somewhere around the Surface Pro 3 – better than the 12.9-inch iPad Pro but worse than the Surface Pro 4, which I consider as good as some laptops. The keyboard was stable enough to be used in my lap, and I didn’t find myself particularly limited by the screen’s two angles. I’ll take its 1.4mm of travel over the 2016 MacBook’s god-awful keyboard (some of my co-workers swear by that keyboard, but I hate it).
That said, the keyboard flexes more than I’d like, and the overall typing experience feels a little ‘meh.’ After being spoiled by the Surface Pro 4 and Pixel C, I’ve come to expect better. The trackpad is surprisingly good. A little on the small side if you’re coming from a laptop (close to the size of the Surface Pro 3) but responsive with no jitteriness and smooth scrolling. The TabPro S is not a desktop replacement, nor is it even in the class of the Surface Pro with a max of 4GB RAM. That doesn’t mean you should ignore it as an everyday computer. The tablet is mercifully free of bloatware, and Windows 10 felt smooth throughout my usage. It’s powerful enough for some light photo editing, and it can play back 4K video smoothly (well, except for in Chrome, which is terrible at playing back video everywhere).
I was also likewise mildly impressed with gaming performance. Obviously, the integrated Intel HD 515 chipset will do you no good at high resolutions with more intensive games, but older titles like ‘Portal 2’ or ‘Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.’That 4GB of RAM does come back to haunt you. While it rarely slowed down, Chrome and Edge did reload tabs frequently when things got really busy – this is not a machine for you if you need to have 30 tabs open at any given time.In all though, I felt like I could do most of my everyday work on the Tab ProS without feeling too hindered. If your workday revolves around an office suite, you’ll probably be fine too.
Samsung claims the TabPro S can last for up to 10.5 hours, and you know what? They weren’t too off – or at least nor as far off as most PC manufacturers.I used the TabPro S with a mix of light Web browsing in Edge and video-watching throughout most of a seven-hour bus ride with adaptive brightness maxed out, and managed to get through with 20 percent battery life left. That’s a success in my book. That said, it’s worth reiterating that Samsung’s adaptive brightness is extremely conservative: Samsung basically tried to keep the screen as dim as it possibly can while still remaining legible. If you disable automatic brightness, expect worse results. As usual, Chrome is a battery hog, but the Core m3 processor is relatively efficient and doesn’t suffer as much of a battery drop-off as the higher end i-series does when doing more intensive tasks.
Fast charging is a much welcome inclusion; you can charge the tablet from empty in under two hours, making it easy to top up. Single-port issues aside, USB-C is welcome too; it’s pretty wonderful to be able to charge my tablet with the same charger as my HTC 10.There isn’t that much special about the TabPro S on the surface. It’s a Core M processor with too little RAM and questionable port selection, and at $899 there are certainly more powerful options.Still, I found myself liking it more than I expected to, probably for much the same reason people like the new MacBook: it’s incredibly portable, good looking, and performs well enough for everyday use. It’s lighter than both the MacBook and the iPad Pro, and is a pleasure to use on the go. If only Microsoft had the apps to match. That makes it probably the best Windows tablet at being ‘just a tablet’ so far – and it’s not too shabby as an actual computer, too.On Sunday afternoon the Metropolitan Fire Brigade issued a warning to remind people not to leave devices plugged in and unattended.
'This is a timely reminder to anyone who uses a laptop, tablet or other device that requires charging to remove the unit from the power source once the item is fully charged or if you are not there to supervise,' a spokesperson said. A team of researchers at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) developed new ultra long-lasting batteries essentially by accident.A study published last week in the journal Energy Letters revealed the UCI research behind a new type of battery that could potentially revolutionize how future batteries are made, reported Phys.org. UCI doctoral candidate Mya Le Thai was reportedly playing around in the lab when she coated a set of gold nanowires in manganese dioxide before applying a “Plexiglas-like” electrolyte gel.Nanowires, which are microscopic, ultra-thin and highly conductive fibers, normally die out after 8,000 charge cycles due to their fragile nature. However, the nanowires in Thai’s gel-coated battery remained intact after three months of tests. The researchers suspect that the gel caused the metal oxide in the battery to plasticize, providing its nanowires new-found flexibility and longevity.
