Une sortie 1A suffit pour la plupart des smartphones. Une tablette réclamera 2A. Avec une batterie équipée de deux sorties (1A et 2A), vous pourrez charger les deux appareils en même temps. Les batteries externes mentionnent également leur puissance d’entrée et de sortie. La puissance d’entrée (pour recharger la batterie elle-même) est standard, fixée à 5V/1A. La puissance de sortie (utilisée pour délivrer l’énergie aux autres appareils) est plus déterminante. Une sortie 5V/1A permettra de charger les smartphones et la plupart des autres appareils. Mais pour une tablette tactile, une puissance de 5V/2A sera nécessaire.

Temps de charge et nombre de recharges Les temps de charge varient d’un modèle de batterie à l’autre, qu’il s’agisse de celui de la batterie elle-même ou de celui de l’appareil à recharger. Les batteries sont livrées sans adaptateur secteur, ce qui invite à les recharger en les connectant au port USB de son ordinateur. En utilisant l’adaptateur d’un autre appareil (celui de votre tablette ou de votre enceinte Bluetooth, par exemple), la charge sera plus rapide. Unfortunately, this glorious revolution in personal mobility has gotten off to a fiery start, thanks to some of these devices’ tendency to burst into flame. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating more than 50 fires involving hoverboards, which were Christmas 2015 must-have toys, made popular by the likes of Justin Bieber and Wiz Khalifa. The CPSC also regards hoverboards as falling hazards.

Due to the risk of fire, New York’s MTA flat-out banned all such devices in January, joining the airlines and air-shipping services. The month before, U.K. officials confiscated more than 15,000 shoddy, fire-prone “hoverboards.” “Protecting consumers from harm is our top priority and [we are] preventing thousands of these unsafe items from being released onto the market every day,” said Lord Toby Harris, chair of the U.K.’s National Trading Standards.

But as a matter of technical fact, the culprit is not lithium-battery technology but poor device quality and rushed, haphazard engineering. Some of these devices lacked basic circuit fusing, while others did not have safeguards against overheating (prolonged discharge of such batteries produces intense heat). “Lithium batteries are completely safe,” said Mr. Cotter of Organic Transit. “But a lot of stuff on the market is junk.”

The near-outlaw status of these devices comes when, conceptually at least, such machines could be very helpful. Last Friday, for example, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced a “safety surge” of infrastructure repair that will curtail and disrupt service throughout the District. New York’s MTA will close the Canarsie Tube between Manhattan and Brooklyn for 18 to 36 months to repair damage from Hurricane Sandy.
