There are lots of reasons why your laptop might be running out of juice before you have a chance to recharge it. It could be loaded with bloatware, rubbish software running in the background, as we explored in How to remove bloatware and speed up your PC. Or, as we discovered in our investigation on download sites, seemingly innocuous free software could be loaded with harmful and processor-hungry malware and adware.
To test the theory that some browsers might be greedier on battery life than others, we ran tests with each of the three most popular browsers on the web. We tested Google Chrome, both its 32-bit and 64-bit beta version, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. Each browser was run on a laptop with the same pages open. We conducted three tests: the first was with eight relatively intensive tabs open, including a YouTube video. The second was a YouTube video only and the third was Google's constantly-updating Flash-based Analytics web tool.
During our testing, Google released a new beta version of Chrome that automatically pauses annoying Flash animated adverts, so we tested this, too. You'll see this highlighted with a * in the first graph. Our results, as you can see below, show a marked difference between each browser. Our testing generally pointed towards Firefox and Internet Explorer as the superior browsers in terms of battery conservation, although in the Analytics test, Chrome came out on top.
So your browser does make a difference, but of course it's mainly your browsing behaviour that's going to affect your battery life. Chrome is widely regarded as being one of the more battery-hungry browsers, but it has plenty of other virtues, so simply not using it isn't the best course of action.Making sure you have enough power for your gadgets when you are on the move is a constant headache. As the number of devices we all carry has expanded, so has our consumption of power. Britons alone throw away 600 million batteries every year, but batteries are no longer the only way to carry the power you need to keep your devices working all day every day.
When working on the move the importance of a reliable and plentiful supply of power is even more important. However, keeping phones, tablets and your notebook PC charged and working is only the tip of the iceberg. Today it's possible to create a mobile office that doesn't need a mains power socket to deliver truly off-grid working. And the need for power is clear with EE's recent Power Bar giveaway being a runaway success. At the other end of the spectrum is the Onaji Pawa Card that measures a svelte 92 x 58 x 4.9mm and weighs just 32 grams with a 500mAh battery. The Olixar enCharge boasts a slightly chunkier 2000mAh battery at 58 grams – and the Veho Pebble Smartstick offers 3000mAh charging in a pack weighing 80 grams.
Battery packs are also being built into all manner of objects. Some of the most useful for business users and individuals that want something a bit different are bags and holdalls. Phorce (pictured at the top of this article) is a great example – the Pro version offers 26000mAh battery capacity with all the connectivity you'll ever need. However, the bag is pricy at £449 (around $700, or AU$880). And the Everpurse uses wireless charging to recharge a built-in battery.
Of course making sure you have enough power for your phone, laptop or tablet is your priority, but there are a number of peripherals that can also be powered without access to a mains supply. When you need to print on the move Canon offers the Pixma iP100, a compact inkjet printer that runs completely off battery power. The HP Officejet H470b is a compact printer that can run from mains, battery or USB.

Scanning on the move is also now possible with a number of battery operated units available including the Doxie that have built-in memory and Wi-Fi allowing connection to any device. VuPoint Solutions also have a range of 'wand' scanners if you want a unit that is ultraportable.Charging a battery pack is a road warrior's first instinct, but what if you could generate your own power and really go off-grid? Renewable power in our context means solar.Today there are a number of products that can offer a level of power security if you will be away from mains power for lengthy periods of time. Or if you want to do your bit to protect the environment, solar charging is the way to go.
There are also a number of solar charging cases for your phone. Good examples include Juse, WakaWaka, and XD Design has a number of models to choose from including a compact unit that sticks to a window.Folding solar panels have also been available for some years. SunJack is a good example, as is Powermonkey from Powertraveller. But if you want to get serious about generating your own power, the Expedition from Powertraveller is the ultimate in self-generating power sources, but it'll cost you about £450 (around $700, or AU$880).
When you need to carry a load of stuff and keep it all charged, the TyIt Energi backpack is ideal. Voltaic Systems have also been supplying backpacks with built-in solar panels for years. In addition to the usual suspects, there are also a number of more exotic ways to generate power when on the move – the hydrogen fuel cell has been promised as a power source pretty much since the arrival of portable devices. But today this promise has been largely realised. The myFC is an ultraportable fuel cell that is designed to be as convenient as your smartphone. The MiniPak is also a handy unit. All you do to generate power is insert a Hydrostik hydrogen cartridge into the main unit to charge using USB.
There are also other factors – do you want a large keyboard for easier typing, or something ultra slim and small? Is a touchscreen important?Laptops typically range from 10” models, up to 17”. There are larger screens available, but they are less common and are not generally portable. If screen realestate is critical, consider a second USB monitor.10” laptops are very portable, and often have excellent battery lives. But the keyboards can be a bit smaller, and they are not as comfortable for longer work sessions. These smaller laptops also typically have much lower end hardware.13” is the sweet spot between portability and still being able to get higher end performance and battery life.15” screens are where the real workhorse laptops enter the equation, with extras such as discrete videocards. You also get full sized keyboards and a screen big enough to view two documents side by side at a decent size.
17” laptops can still be thin, but are starting to add a lot of extra heft. But the extra screen real estate can be critical for some uses, such as video editing. You also tend to find more extras, such as gaming ability, is this size, without going too overboard in price.

Getting through a day of school and Uni is hard enough without having to hunt for power plugs.Ensuring a long enough battery life to make it through the entire day without recharging is ideal.Ditching an unnecessary charger can also lighten your backpack load. That said, having to grab a charge occasionally is not the end of the world. In our experience, a 10 hour battery life is the minimum needed for constant use. 5 Hours will suffice for those lower usage, whilst 15 hours + is useful for those with long travel time. One option to extend the time away from the wall socket is to use a laptop Power Bank. The Comsol 20,000 mAh Notebook Power Bank costs $149 and can give your laptop (as well as other devices) a second wind.
When laptop shopping, it’s a good idea to know what specs are important. Lower end Celeron CPUs are just fine for basic word processing, but an Intel Core i5 or i7 is needed for more intensive tasks.2GB of RAM is the bare minimum, whilst 4GB is good and 8GB is great. More is only needed on specialist high end machines.Touchscreens and convertible tablet style laptops can be handy, but think carefully about your possible uses before paying extra for these features. The two major options are screens that detach, and ones that fold or twist around behind the laptop.USB 3.0 is a must for fast file transfers. An SSD is best, but not a deal breaker on a more affordable model.
A 1920 x 1080 screen resolution is ideal, and while higher is nice, it tends to sap battery life. 1366 x 768 is very common, but still ok on 13” or smaller laptops. Many people have a loyalty to a specific OS, and each has it’s own advantages. While other options such as Linux are available, most laptops run Windows, followed by Mac OS, and Chrome OS.Apple laptops are typically extremely well built, with great service and support options. Some software is only available on Mac OS, while other programs are not available at all.
Apple laptops are only available as more expensive models, which range from ultra portable to more powerful. On the plus side, Macs generally have excellent battery life.Windows laptops are built by a huge range of manufacturers, and can be ultra cheap through to super high end. Most schools and Universities use Windows based computers for students, so cross compatibility is good. Most (good) systems run Windows 10.Chrome OS is a simplified operating system mostly available on more affordable hardware. It has excellent productivity options (word processing etc) for no extra cost, but can’t run many third party programs. Chrome OS is well optimised for low end hardware, and can feel fast and snappy on even very cheap laptops.
The touchpad is also a little less responsive than we would like, although we found the keyboard absolutely fine for high-speed typing. It’s heavier than the ASUS EeeBook, but it also feels a lot more solid, with a suitably stiff hinge and heavy plastic casing. We tested this device under Windows 8.1 (‘cause that’s what it came with), and as expected, it performed somewhat better than the rest of the competition — especially in CPUMark, thanks to its superior processor.
However, its 3D performance was a bit of a let down. This is still not a laptop that you can play games on (good, if you want your kids to do their homework).Okay, we have a confession to make: we let Toshiba cheat on this one. The Satellite Click 10-C00H breaks our price rule by a little less than $100 — but we let it slide because this is definitely worth looking into. For a start, it’s a detachable, a 10.1-inch tablet computer that docks with a (supplied) keyboard base. That base, in addition to including a very good keyboard and responsive touchpad, also includes two USB 2.0 ports and an additional battery that pushes the device’s total battery life to an impressive 15 hours.
