At first glance, 5 or 6 hours of battery life may not sound horrible, but it's important to remember two things: First, the average ultraportable laptop lasts 8 hours and 20 minutes on this test, and some systems last much longer. For instance, the 13-inch MacBook Air offered 14 hours of endurance, actually 2 hours longer than Apple claims, but the system benefits from a lower-resolution display, which uses less power. The nontouch version of the Dell XPS 13 with a full-HD display lasted 11 hours and 54 minutes (Dell claims "up to 18 hours"), and the touch version with an even sharper, quad-HD screen lasted a fairly good 8:08. It's also worth noting that our battery test is more demanding than what vendors use to puff up their claims. Manufacturer battery tests are based on either wishful thinking or an unrealistic workload. MobileMark 2014, the most popular test amongst PC makers, runs a series of local applications but requires that your laptop be connected to a router but disconnected from the Internet. The test can also be run with screen time-outs during "idle periods."

Others vendors, such as Microsoft, use video rundowns, which involve playing a movie — usually a clip saved locally on the laptop — on continuous loop until the battery runs out. However, most CPUs are designed to use a lot less power when playing video than when performing other tasks, and if the video is a local file, the device doesn't even have to connect to the Internet. According to a note on the bottom of its Surface Pro 4 product page, Microsoft states, "Testing consisted of full battery discharge during video playback. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network." There is no word on whether Surface was streaming the video from the Internet or running it locally and what the exact brightness and screen settings were.

Like a car that gets 30 miles per gallon if you drive at the speed limit without hitting traffic, your laptop's endurance will vary based on how you use it. For the Laptop test, we tune the screen brightness to 100 nits; on most notebooks, that's less than 40 percent of the maximum. The average laptop screen hits 272 nits and, let's be honest with ourselves, how often do you run your laptop at a higher brightness?

You probably do spend most of your time in the Web browser, the act our test is designed to simulate. But if you have other applications open or just a lot of tabs, you're taxing your laptop more than our test does. If you're doing productivity work with the brightness turned up, one of the laptops or 2-in-1s above could die on you after 4 hours. When TechRadar tested the Spectre x2 on PCMark 8, a benchmark that includes a combination of Web surfing and offline tasks, the device lasted only 3 hours and 54 minutes, over 2.5 hours less than we got. However, the site's review listed "decent battery life" as one of the 2-in-1's strengths.THE XPS 15 LOOKS LIKE DELL BLEW UP THE XPS 13 Unfortunately, I’m not a big fan of the keyboard on the XPS 15. It feels like it could be a little bigger given the extra space here, and the keys are a little mushy. I was hoping for something closer to Microsoft’s Surface Book keyboard.

Moving from a 13-inch laptop to a 15-inch model can be challenging, especially if you’re as used to smaller sizes as I am. The XPS 15 doesn’t fit inside my bag for a start, and its extra weight is definitely noticeable. It’s around the same weight and thickness as Apple’s MacBook Pro Retina, so it’s not exactly bulky or heavy compared to other 15-inch Windows machines. If you’re coming from a 13-inch laptop, be prepared for compromises like shifting around regularly when you use it on your lap because of the weight, or simply buying a new bag to carry it around.

The model I’ve been testing has a 15.6-inch 4K touchscreen display (3840 x 2160), 16GB of RAM, and Intel’s latest Core i7 processor. It’s priced at a steep $2,229.99, but the base model starts at $999.99 with a 1080p display, 8GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i3 processor. Dell’s 4K edge-to-edge display is simply stunning on the XPS 15. I love the XPS 13’s display, but the larger, higher-res version on the XPS 15 looks even better. Viewing angles are solid, and color reproduction is really crisp. The upgraded display is a $450 option, and I think it’s worth it, but I really wish there was a matte option. I dislike glossy displays with a passion, and while this one is really nice, a matte finish would have really put it over the top.

The computer was bought with Windows 10 pre-installed. The hard drive of the computer was formatted before Windows 10 was installed. This is also known as a Clean Installation. If this is your case, then click here for options on how to remove Windows 10 and install Windows 7 or 8 on your computer. One of the interesting things I’ve been observing with regard to the near forced march to mobile devices is the increased need for a desktop computer where you can just sit and get work done. With all of the background sync capability in the various platforms provided by Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and others the old annoying problems of keeping you files in sync across multiple devices is pretty much over. You can pretty easily start creation on one device today and finish it on another.

Gaming, although clearly increasingly focused on mobile devices, still favors desktop computers for the most engaging and realistic games and VR, in its most realistic form, will require the kind of graphics performance that few laptops without access to a desktop graphics card will be able to enjoy. Seeing this as an opportunity AMD just refreshed its desktop processor line and introduced a new fan, the Wraith Fan, and although I personally still prefer water cooling for a bundled fan it isn’t bad.

Like many I still live off a desktop PC when I’m working in the office. It is simply great to walk in, sit down, wake up the machine and start working. I’m not fast cycling my laptop battery, this is what happens when you work on most laptops while plugged in, which lowers its battery life dramatically over time and find that at the end of like for my laptop the battery is still pretty much as it was when the laptop was new as a result. I used to be able to pull the battery out of my laptop to keep it from wearing out in desktop use but with these new sleeker designs that is no longer possible (and frankly I rarely remembered to do this even when I could).

The additional advantage is that if something happens to your laptop you always have a backup both in the cloud and on your home machine so that you can either pull the file down from the web or have your spouse mail you the critical file.

Finally you can build your own desktop computer, configure it just as you like it, and with AMD’s announcement you can build a pretty nice machine full sized PC for under $1K, a nice micro PC for around half that, or upgrade your existing machine for far less.If we had to complain about one thing when it comes to Apple's laptops, we'd gripe about battery life. And that's especially true if you own an older MacBook Pro. Simply run the Chrome browser on your machine for a couple hours, and before you know it, you'll be hastily scrounging around and looking for a place to plug in and charge. It's annoying. You know this, and we know this, and apparently, Apple has taken notice of the issue as well. As noted by Sky News, Apple has recently submitted a patent application for a new fuel cell system. This power system could keep its devices charged for "days or even weeks" at a time. The application detailed a "portable and cost-effective fuel cell system for a portable computing device" and indicated MacBooks would get the tech first. The system uses different fuel and energy sources to provide power. The application, for instance, listed sources like sodium borohydride and water, sodium silicate and water, lithium hydride and water, magnesium hydride and water, lithium borohydride and water, lithium aluminum hydride and water, aluminum hydride, and more.

According to the application, the actual power cartridge would run out and need to be replaced instead of re-charged. Keep in mind most patents never come to fruition, but nonetheless, it's still interesting to see that Apple is at least considering new and unique ways of improving device battery life. Microsoft has outdone themselves by offering us a fantastic deal of free Windows 10 upgrade for one full year. It is not surprising that many people have taken advantage of this great offer which saves them from spending over $300 on a new operating system. While some persons have given Windows 10 great reviews and recommendations, not everyone is content with Microsoft’s new operating system. Such persons are not content because they:

Battery packs Basically, when creating portable power sources you have two choices: you can carry battery packs, or generate the power you need, when you need it. The number of portable battery packs is bewildering. These packs need to be small and compact, yet offer enough juice to make carrying them justified. Not all battery packs are made equal, which is where a bit of battery education can come in handy when choosing the right one for your needs.

All batteries have a mAh (milliampere hours) rating, which indicates how much power the battery can deliver for an hour. For instance, a 1000mAh rated battery can deliver that level of power for one hour of use. The practical upshot is that the higher the mAh number, the longer the battery will last. To work out how long a battery lasts for you simply divide the device's power usage by the mAh rating of the battery pack, and that figure is how many hours of power it can give you.

In addition you will also see battery packs and chargers rated at 1A or 2A – this shows their capacity in Amps. Most smartphones charge at 1A, with tablets using 2A. If you are going to charge these devices with a third-party charger, it's worth checking the rating to ensure you get the same charging performance as you have experienced with their dedicated chargers.

The selection of battery packs is wide-ranging indeed. However, not all battery packs are the same, so it's important to match your needs to the right battery. When choosing the right battery pack, ask yourself these questions:

Which devices do you need to power? How long will you be away from mains power? What kind of recharging connector do they use? Are the weight and dimensions of the battery pack important? How much power do you need to carry? At the heavy-duty end of the battery pack market is the EC Technology 2nd Gen Deluxe 22400mAh, and it offers masses of battery power, but it's heavy at nearly 450 grams (though slim with a thickness of 22mm). Or the Zendure A8 Pro offers 24000mAh in a 4cm enclosure weighing 480 grams.
