Contrast levels are strong while colours are pleasingly warm, leaping right off the screen. Image quality doesn’t fade as you tilt the phone away from you and although this isn’t a Full HD screen, high-def movies still look great. The front-facing speaker, positioned beneath the screen, packs plenty of power for a mobile blaster. I’d still use headphones to enjoy music, but it more than does the job for kicking back with a Youtube video or a quick bit of Netflix. And if you plan on taking loads of photos or carrying around a massive media collection, that microSD memory card slot is going to come in very handy. The 16GB of built-in storage fills up fast, making expansion essential.

Windows 10 is of course the OS of choice, so you get the usual array of basic Windows features, including the Cortana voice assistant and Glance Screen (to check for notifications without powering up the phone). A handful of apps come pre-installed and you can grab more from the Microsoft Store. I really like the consistent look and feel between the mobile and desktop Windows OS and anyone who’s loyal to the Microsoft brand will appreciate the ability to quickly switch between devices, with super-quick file syncing over the cloud.

However, some Windows 10 features found on the flagship Lumias are very notable by their absence here. For a start, there’s no Windows Hello for unlocking the handset with your eyes. Admittedly this feature is still in beta and has its limitations, with low-light performance proving iffy at best. But it was nice to have the option to bypass PIN entry while keeping your privates secure. Here's hoping it comes to the Lumia 650 in a future update.

There’s also no Continuum here, most likely a result of the Lumia 650’s basic performance. This is a massive shame as the phone is being marketed at business users as well as everyday consumers, and the option to travel without a bulky laptop is very enticing. Microsoft is reportedly working on ways to bring Continuum to lower-end devices, but it sounds like Continuum is going to be premium-only for a while.

Still, it’s encouraging that the Microsoft Store is much better stocked these days, with popular services such as Netflix, iPlayer, Spotify, Instagram and Napster all supported with apps. Many of these apps aren’t as nicely designed as their Android or iOS versions, but the majority are fully-featured and stable.

As for connectivity, you get the same built-in antenna as the Lumia 950, designed to improve signal while also cutting battery drain. We had no trouble making calls, with perfect clarity and no drop-outs around the outskirts of London. The Lumia 650 also packs dual mics, which make it easier to use as a speakerphone during a conference call. Sadly there’s no 5GHz WiFi support, so you’re stuck with olde-worlde networking.

Performance and battery life

The Lumia 650 packs the same Snapdragon 212 processor as its cheaper sibling, the Lumia 550, which is surprising to say the least. After all, last year’s Lumia 640 ran with the more powerful Snapdragon 400 chipset for the same cost, while most Android rivals at this price point (or cheaper) sport more up-to-date tech.

Of course, Windows tends to run well even on budget blowers so performance isn’t terrible by any means, but you’ll still notice occasional little stutters when flicking through menus or loading up apps. Try zooming into a photo and you’ll be hanging around a couple of seconds while the image refreshes. You’ll also get dropped frames when playing games like Minion Rush, although the latest games are at least still playable.

The trouble with most convertibles is the way they connect with the keyboard. In most detachable convertibles, the keyboard is too light or just serves as a dock. Users can’t move the lid backward or forward. Also, a slight push not only topples the lid backwards but also sends the tablet flying away because of uneven weight distribution. The Canvas Laptab 2 suffers from no such issues. It has a metal clasp that firmly holds the tablet with the keyboard. The weight between the two is more evenly balanced, so the lid doesn’t topple backwards easily.

Scientists have developed a new way to use rechargeable lithium metal batteries at room temperature, an advance that may lead to far superior portable energy storage devices to power smartphones and laptops. Rechargeable lithium metal batteries offer better energy storage capabilities than today's workhorse lithium-ion technology that are used in our smartphones and laptops. However on being recharged, they spontaneously grow bumps called dendrites on the surface of the negative electrode. This makes it difficult to use these batteries in smartphones and laptops.Speaking at an event in Tel Aviv, Bruce Harris, one of Microsoft's Technical Evangelists, confirmed that the Hololens should last around five and a half hours of regular use and two and a half hours when pushed to its limits. That means you won't be able to strap on a headset and play holographic Minecraft all day.

Harris confirmed that the headset will be completely wireless, and capable of connecting to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled devices. He also revealed that people will be able to link multiple HoloLens devices together over the internet, so they can enjoy the exact same experience together. Any of you hoping to get your hands on a wired version are out of luck, because apparently Microsoft isn't making one.

As for field of view, which is the main concern people have had about HoloLens, Harris said that using the headset would be the equivalent of looking at a 15-inch monitor from two feet away. In other words, it's still not that great.

He did add that things like price and battery life will improve as Microsoft develops the tech, and this could mean that the field of view will improve with future iterations of the hardware. It doesn't sound like there's anything concrete at the moment, though.

Unfortunately we still don't know when HoloLens will go on sale, just that developer kits will be on sale for $3,000 in the coming months. [The Verge]

With the new technology developed at the Cornell University in US, creating a highly efficient lithium metal battery for a cellphone or other device could be reality in the near future. Current technology focuses on managing the dendrites by putting up a mechanically strong barrier, normally a ceramic separator, between the negative and the positive electrodes to restrict the movement of the dendrite. The relative non-conductivity and brittleness of such barriers, however, means the battery must be operated at high temperature and are prone to failure when the barrier cracks.

Researchers, led by professor Lynden Archer and graduate student Snehashis Choudhury, found that by designing nanostructured membranes with pore dimensions below a critical value, it is possible to stop growth of dendrites in lithium batteries at room temperature. Archer credits Choudhury with identifying the polymer polyethylene oxide (PEO) as particularly promising. The idea was to take advantage of 'hairy' nanoparticles, created by grafting PEO onto silica to form nanoscale organic hybrid materials (NOHMs) to create nanoporous membranes.

Battery life is about average for a five-inch phone. We regularly made it through a full day on a single charge, even with plenty of play time, with the screen on auto-brightness. If you try streaming movies non-stop, this drops to between seven and eight hours, which is a better-than-average result.

Charging the phone back up to full takes just under two hours, as long as you’re connected to the mains.

The Lumia 650 finally introduces some premium design elements into Microsoft’s mid-range offerings and has a few positive elements that will appeal to the average consumer, including a strong screen for the £150 price point.

However, the limited performance and lack of killer features such as Continuum make it difficult to recommend as a business device, especially as the competition from the Android market is very strong. For less money you can grab a Moto G, Wileyfox Swift or Vodafone Prime Ultra, which offer excellent features and dependable performance. And if you’re dead set on Windows, you can still pick up last year’s brilliant Lumia 640 LTE for under £100.

Laptops liberate us from wires and desks, but they have quirks and pitfalls that you have to remain vigilant about. Battery issues, overheating, and unresponsive input can make your liberation feel like tribulation, so here are solutions to those issues and other common problems with Windows laptops.

Turning on your laptop

Can't turn on your laptop? Most of the time, the issue is just a drained battery. First, check for a bulge on the laptop's underside. This is the hallmark of a damaged battery, which is unsafe to use: A damaged battery with power going through it can catch fire. So replace a faulty battery before plugging in your laptop.

If your battery's undamaged, plug in your power cable and boot up. If the battery doesn't want to hold a charge, you can replace it. Mac laptop batteries are not intended to be replaced by users, and attempting to do so will void your warranty. But most Windows laptop users should be able to buy a replacement battery and install it themselves, instead of sending it to the manufacturer or an authorized repair shop.

Battery power settings

If your laptop's still not coming back on, it may have changed to another power state since you last used it. For example, a laptop may be set to go into sleep mode if you close it or leave it idle for a few minutes, then transition to hibernation mode if left alone for a couple hours. If that's the case, opening the laptop won't wake it. You need to tap the power button or hold it for a few seconds.

Change this behavior by hitting your Windows key to open the Start menu, typing "power options" (without the quotes), clicking the Power Options shortcut that appears in your search results, and clicking Change Plan Settings. When you're done, click the Save Changes button to make them take effect. You can also press Windows-X to open the Mobility Center at any time, where you can choose between the Balanced, Power Saver, and High Performance power plans.
