Tablets have much better energy efficiency than laptops. While the batteries are considerably smaller, they don’t need to power as many components. Laptop processors aren’t as powerful, and so use less battery. Another factor is the software running. Laptops have software meant for big desktop PCs, which require plenty of energy. Tablet apps are built specifically with the tablet in mind, and are better geared towards the tablet experience. That means less battery usage.

Another advantage: tablets don’t use much energy when not used. Take a fully charged tablet and a fully charged laptop and leave them unplugged for a few hours. The tablet will have used maybe one percent of its battery in that span. A laptop will have used much, much more. Traveling with a tablet, then, is much better than traveling with a laptop.

Making the switch It might be a strange feeling to switch from a laptop to a tablet, even if a tablet is a better device in the long run. Here are a few issues you might run into.Keyboard. Some people do not like the virtual keyboard of tablets and other touchscreen devices. This is mostly a matter of feel. We get tactile feedback when we type on our regular keyboards. On a touchscreen keyboard we’re just hitting a piece of glass. Typing on a touchscreen does become easier with time, but if you need a physical keyboard there are many small Bluetooth keyboards that do the job well.

Software. The good thing about using a laptop is that the software is compatible with desktops as well. Tablets, however, use different operating systems. This means buying various software that you might already have on your laptop. Thankfully, tablet software is relatively cheap. An office suite might cost you $400 on a laptop, but it costs less than one tenth of that on a tablet. Loading up your tablet with the best software is relatively cheap.

Blogging tools. All the major tablet platforms have WordPress apps. Many have apps for other blogging platforms. They are not necessary. Tablet browsers are as efficient as PC browsers, so you can log into WordPress just like you do on a laptop. Other blogging tools, such as an image editor and word processor, are also available for tablets. There’s really nothing lose in the transition.

Blogging from a laptop is nice. We’ve done it for years and years, so it has become familiar. But blogging from a tablet can change everything. It’s an ultra portable, simple, and efficient device that can fulfill all of our blogging needs. It’s tough to change over to an unfamiliar platform, but with a tablet, it just might be worth it.

If you blog from your tablet, please share your experience here. I started blogging from my iPad last year, and I’ve barely used my laptop ever since.

Lenovo pioneered the bend-back laptop design with its original Yoga, and now the leading PC vendor is taking that design to the next level. Starting at $1,199, the Yoga 900 features a number of improvements over last year's Yoga 3 Pro, including speedy Intel 6th Generation Core Series processor, longer battery life and a tighter hinge design.

We had a chance to spend a little time with the Yoga 900 and were impressed with its lightweight design, colorful display and solid build quality. Like its predecessor, 2014's Yoga 3 Pro, the Yoga 900 weighs just 2.6 pounds and is under .6 inches thick, making it extremely light and easy to carry in your hand or the smallest of bags.

Made from ABS plastic with a faux-leather deck, the new Yoga is available in three colors: silver, champagne gold and clementine orange. As with previous models, the orange color is only available online, not at brick-and-mortar retail stores. Also, like last year's model, the 900 has a 13.3-inch display with a very-sharp, 3200 x 1800 resolution. Though we didn't get to spend a lot of time gawking at it, colors on the display appeared vibrant and attractive.

The Yoga 900 uses a "watchband" style hinge that looks like the one on the Yoga 3 Pro, but offers more resistance. During our hands-on, we had the chance to poke the screens on both the 3 Pro and the 900 and found that the older model's hinge would bend back a little if we touched the screen too hard while new one remained in place.

Lenovo has also changed the keyboard for the new Yoga, adding a dedicated function row, which was missing on the 3 Pro. So, instead of hitting an the Fn key plus a number to lower the volume or raise the brightness, you'll be able to hit an F key on the top row. The deck still has a comfortable, soft-touch finish which looks like leather, but the 900's palm rest has a smooth rather than a dimpled texture. On the inside, the Yoga 900 differs from its predecessor by offering a full-fledged Intel 6th Gen Core i5 or Core i7 processor rather than a low-power Core M chip. The Yoga 3 Pro's Core M CPU provided unimpressive performance on our tests while its low-power usage didn't do enough to help the notebook achieve long battery life, as it lasted a mere 6 hours and 5 minutes on a charge.

Lenovo is using a larger battery on the Yoga 900 and advertises 8 hours of endurance on the new model. We'll have to see how it performs in our lab tests. The laptop's other key specs include 8 to 16GB of RAM and a 256GB or 512GB SSD.

The Yoga 900 will be available within the next week or two, both at Best Buy and Lenovo.com. Best Buy offers a superior base configuration as its $1,199 model has a Core i7-6500U processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD while the starting model on Lenovo has the same storage and RAM but only a Core i5 CPU. Intel's next processor platform has arrived. Codenamed Skylake, the new 14nm architecture will power Intel's 6th Generation Core series CPUs, along with a new lineup of low-power Core M processors for tablets and hybrids. For the foreseeable future — likely a year or more — most new Intel-based PCs will use one of these chips, which promise longer battery life, stronger performance and the ability to play several 4K videos at once without breaking a sweat. Here are five things you need to know about Skylake.

1.An Hour Longer Battery Life Skylake CPUs have a number of power-saving capabilities that promise significantly longer battery life. The integrated Intel 500 graphics chips use less power for more performance, enabling an hour of additional video playback over a similarly configured laptop with a prior-generation Broadwell CPU.

Intel's new Speed Shift Technology helps save power no matter the task by switching power states in just 1 millisecond — 30 times faster than prior CPUs, which relied on software to initiate the change. By changing such "P States" more quickly, Skylake avoids wasting electricity while it's waiting to go from full performance to idle after completing a task. It's also able to go from low power to high speed much faster, improving performance.

Skylake also provides "fine-grain" power gating, which means that it powers only the parts of the CPU that are in active use. While prior Intel CPUs had power gating, the new platform is able to target more specific "power domains" or parts of the chip. At a briefing, Intel VP of Platform Engineering Shlomit Weiss likened the new CPUs to a central air conditioner that only cools that part of a room where people are standing at the moment.

All Skylake-based chips have hardware 4K video decoding, which allows the chips to play ultra-HD movies without taxing the CPU. Intel says you can play RAW, uncompressed 4K files on the Intel Graphics 500 series GPUs that come with Skylake chips. A tablet running a low-power Intel Core M chip with Skylake can play four different 4K videos at once, with only 20 percent CPU utilization. Intel also says that its current-generation Intel 500 series graphics chips are fast enough to beat more than 80 percent of discrete graphics cards on the market, making the Intel chips good enough for people who aren't hardcore gamers. The new GPUs can also drive up to three distinct 4K monitors at once, allowing for quite a productivity setup. For many years, desktop PC enthusiasts have been able to overclock their CPUs, pushing them to higher speeds than they are specced for, by tweaking some settings. Now, with Skylake, Intel is releasing an overclockable Core i7 processor for laptops, the Core i7-6820HK, which is designed to run at up to 3.2 GHz in turbo mode, but can be turned up way beyond that. During a brief demo, the chipmaker turned a laptop with the chip up to 4.2 GHz, using a software utility.

In-Flight Wi-Fi Stuck in Coach ENLARGE ILLUSTRATION: JASON SCHNEIDER FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL Don’t get us wrong: Being able to get online at 30,000 feet is a modern miracle. But when you consider that for the price of a T-bone, you get two hours of CompuServe-like speeds, the awe quickly fizzles. It isn’t uncommon for service to fail after you’ve paid, and many in-flight entertainment systems require you to download a companion app—over poky in-flight Wi-Fi. But hope is on the tarmac: JetBlue’s new Fly-Fi service, offered free, is noticeably faster than Gogo’s current offering. Gogo has also received FAA approval to start deploying technology that will be up to 20 times faster than what you get now.

End Web Browser Tab Overload Looking for that one open browser tab you need at the end of a long workday? You’ll spot Waldo quicker. Robust Web apps and faster Internet speeds have us spending most of our days in our browsers, yet we’re still managing pages the same way we did over a decade ago. (Seriously, Netscape introduced tabs in 2002.) Sure, you can pin your favorite tabs in place or install an extension like Chrome’s Tab Wrangler to automatically close and save neglected tabs you had open. But we leave it to Silicon Valley’s greatest minds to concoct a fundamentally different, more intelligent way to manage our Web lives.
