It’s easy enough to create a text document, but iPad keyboards are designed to the width of the iPad, which means the keys are crammed together and typing is slow and uncomfortable.

The iPad Pro’s 12.9-inch screen means the Apple Smart Keyboard case is wide enough to comfortably type.

Critique of reviewing

This is my first review typed entirely on an iPad, and I typed it as fast as I would on my regular keyboard.

This is the first iPad I’ve had that seemed big enough to show and use two apps at a time on the screen, although today very few apps are optimized to take advantage of the split-screen multitasking feature.

I had been using a free writing program called iA Writer for the iPad. When I launched it on the iPad Pro, I found it was not compatible with the iOS split-screen multitasking.

A quick trip to the iOS App Store showed the $4.99 iA Writer Pro app was a nice step up, including the ability to go split screen.

The combination of typing on a keyboard and navigating a browser with my finger on a screen took a while to become comfortable.

I also found the iPad Pro the perfect way to read magazines and newspapers online. I subscribe to Time magazine, and the electronic edition looks great on the larger screen.

If I can toot my own horn, The Dallas Morning News’ e-edition looks great on the iPad Pro as well.

I fired up Sling TV and the four speakers worked really well for watching videos.

As for the iPad Pro replacing my MacBook Pro? Almost, but not quite.

What Mom thinks

I could use it to do my writing and Internet surfing, but at work, I have to use programs and log into systems that I can’t do on an iPad just yet.

So while Jim the columnist could get along with an iPad Pro, Jim the IT guy still needs a laptop.

Numerous ports support a variety of connectivity options. These are found on the left edge of the display and include a headphone jack, AC power jack, two USB 3.0 ports (one for recharging), an SD card reader, a LAN (RJ45) Ethernet port, a mini DisplayPort, and HDMI output. One of the challenges with reducing friction, or effort, in digital transactions is it’s tough to know where to begin and exactly what needs fixing. Optimally, a financial marketer or product manager would like to evaluate account opening and application processes, eliminating all steps that stand in the way of a quick and easy interaction.

The VAIO Z Canvas’s keyboard is called “detachable” but this is a misnomer since it doesn’t connect physically to the tablet screen at all. It is instead entirely detached, connecting wirelessly to the display via radio (RF) instead of Bluetooth. The downside is that it can’t be used in traditional “on the lap” orientation.

The keyboard comes included with the purchase of the Z Canvas. It’s lightweight and battery-powered, adhering to the display magnetically when it’s placed on top of the screen in the closed position. The keyboard battery automatically charges through a small connecting nub when placed in this position. A switch turns the keyboard on, off, or disables the trackpad. The keyboard is full-size, as is the track pad, but it lacks a 10-key numeric pad.

The key travel is shallow, only about 1.35mm, but it’s crisp, with maximum snap. Unfortunately, it’s not backlit.

The VAIO Z Canvas comes with a battery powered N-Trig active digitizer stylus pen powered by a AAAA battery. It has 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity. The lower tip of the stylus has a rubberized comfort grip that houses two function buttons – one for launching Windows OneNote, another for clipping. Tip sensitivity can be adjusted between Soft, Normal and Hard. Built-in screen palm rejection aids in preventing errors when using the tablet for writing or sketching.

That seems completely reasonable to us. Compare that to sitting through a two-hour movie, and I would argue that 2.5 to 5.5 hours is plenty of time to invest before having to put the HoloLens down for charging.

Microsoft has managed to get such arguably decent battery life by limiting the field of view (described by Harris as similar to a 15-inch monitor about 2 feet away). As costs come down (Microsoft is manufacturing the device itself), the company plans to expand the field of view.

But the best part of Harris’ talk was the mention that the HoloLens will apparently be able to connect with other units, including over the Internet. HoloLens owners will thus be able to share experiences with other HoloLens users, viewing an object together at the same time. The experience will naturally depend on the available bandwidth, like for any Internet-connected device.

Microsoft still has not shared a release date for the HoloLens. That said, the Developer Edition will be available this quarter for $3,000.

Samsung has thrown the gauntlet at Apple iPad Pro with the launch of the latest Galaxy TabPro S tablet. Both the Apple and Samsung offerings have the potential to become laptop alternatives, but the question remains: Which is the better of the two?

Laptop owners often need to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. The tablets may not be fitted with high-end processors found in many regular laptops. However, both tablets produce enough speed that will allow customers to perform laptop tasks on the tablets.

Overall, the laptop has a premium feel and is fun to look at.

DISPLAY The display is a 15.6-inch full HD (1920×1080 resolution) IPS display. It’s an LED anti-glare backlit screen and features a multi-touch display. I seldom use touchscreen displays as the ability doesn’t flow with how I use laptops. In a time where QHD displays are becoming normal, you’d think the 1080p screen would be terrible to look at, but I found it enjoyable.

Another boon to having a 1080p screen is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M doesn’t have to push extra pixels. Though, while I feel the graphics card could handle it, it means higher frame rates for gaming. The viewing angle of the screen was also pretty good and I found I was able to see the screen from a lot of different angles.

SOFTWARE The laptop runs Windows 10 Home 64-bit. As with other Windows 10 computers, I found Windows to work quickly and smoothly. Whether you love it or hate it, Windows 10 flies on the ideapad 15-inch. Like other Lenovo machines, the laptop comes with its fair share of other applications — or bloat depending on how you look at it — and trials. As Jason pointed out in his review, I found a few Lenovo applications onboard. They included:

Depending on your stance, these applications can either be helpful or hurtful. On a 128GB solid state drive, they take up space and that may rub people the wrong way. Though, they can be uninstalled and you’re not forced to use them. My personal preference is to get rid of these apps.

You’ll also get 30-day free trials of McAfee LiveSafe and Microsoft Office. You’ll also see a free three-month (90-day) trial to OnePlay, which gives you access to over 1,500 games. One thing annoyed me was the random (and large) popups for McAfee’s software. Though, that was remedied with a quick uninstall.

PERFORMANCE With a sixth generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor coming in at 2.60 GHz, a GeForce GTX 960M with 4GB of RAM, a solid state drive and 16GB of RAM, you can expect this thing to fly. It darn well did. The typical day-to-day operations had no lag to speak of, but let’s talk about gaming — let’s face it, that’s why you’re here — because that’s where the ideapad 15-inch really did shine.

My personal benchmark when it comes to how a gaming machine performs is to fire up World of Warcraft on ultra settings. While the game looks halfway decent on lower settings, it looks like a whole new game on ultra. Having a computer that can keep up however, is an entirely different story.
