Kickstarter-funded Ampy uses your body's kinetic energy to charge up a pager-sized device. Strap it to your arm or a belt and it can recharge a smartphone in real time; an hour of jogging or similar exercise yields about an hour of use. You could also just throw it in your bag and get the same extra hour of gadget life after a week of walking around _ not an awesome trade off, maybe, but possibly better than nothing. In the last decade though, the smartphone era has rendered current battery technology woefully inadequate. The latest iPhone is 16 times more powerful than the one Steve Jobs unveiled nine years ago, but the battery still lasts just a day. Given the chasm in power between the two, this is a feat of engineering, but it is one that has been achieved through more efficient processors, not better batteries. In terms of milli-Ampere hours – a measure of battery capacity – there has been just a 22 per cent improvement between the original iPhone in 2007 and last year’s 6s model.

The challenges of lithium-ion The design of a lithium-ion battery is relatively simple. When a battery is being charged, electrons flow through a circuit to a negative electrode, attracting lithium ions – electrically-charged particles – that are contained in a solution known as an electrolyte. When the battery is being used, those ions transfer to a negative electrode through the solution, in the process releasing electrons that then power the device. It is fairly-basic chemistry, and as a result, is difficult to tinker with. There are only so many elements, and lithium has been shown to be the best of these for the task at hand. Improvements tend to come from tweaking the chemical makeup of the electrodes or electrolyte, but are gradual and become more difficult over time. Despite the huge focus on batteries from technology’s richest companies, capacities tend to improve at around 5pc a year. In fact, many manufacturers have found the best way to improve batteries has simply been to make them bigger, thus allowing room for more ions. For most people, this is simply not good enough. Our smartphones are moving from an important to a fundamentally necessary part of our lives. We pay for things with them, used them to communicate, and rely on them for navigation. If they fail, it’s distressing. But this is nothing compared to an electric car, or a lifesaving health device, running out of power. And solar power, expected to account for a major part of our energy consumption in the future, will require high-capacity storage for when the sun fails to deliver.

As thin as they are, the Notebook 9 laptops are not fanless, and there's a pair of vents at the back of each computer to let heat out. Both computers use low-voltage models from Intel's latest Skylake generation of processors, with specs scaling up to a maximum of a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage for the 15-inch Notebook 9 or 128GB for the 13-incher. Those specs do hint at the fact that these laptops are intended to fill the middle of Samsung's lineup and not challenge the Pro members of its Book PC range. The Notebook 9s are also limited to a 1080p display resolution, which is fine, but setting one of these computers up against the new Galaxy Tab Pro shows a marked difference in quality and vibrance, with the Windows tablet being in the clear lead.

I like these Notebook 9 laptops. They don't have touchscreens or many fancy extras — though the 15-inch model does include a USB-C port and fast-charging capabilities, which are always appreciated. The hinge seems nice and reliable, opening up to a full 180-degree arc. The keyboard also has good key travel and a satisfying responsiveness. More than anything, though, the ease of toting one of these Notebook 9s around is just sublime. Unfortunately, Samsung has yet to finalize a few of the specs and set pricing and release dates for these laptops. Those, along with the performance of the batteries inside, are the key outstanding questions about Samsung's new Notebook 9 series.
