Following Design Capacity is the Full Charge Capacity, which represents the amount of charge that the battery will actually hold. In the case of my example system, the full charge capacity is actually less than the design capacity. This drop in capacity is directly related to the age of the battery. This battery is two years old, and we'll find more detail when we get to the Battery Capacity History section in a moment.
The last item in this section is called Cycle Count. This value indicates the number of times the battery has used up 100% of its charge. For example, a cycle could be measured each time the battery has run all the way down and then been recharged. A cycle could also be the result of discharging to 50%, charging to full, then discharging to 50% again. Batteries can go through a limited number of cycles before they are considered consumed. The maximum cycle count value will vary depending on a number of factors, but the battery manufacturer will list a maximum count value in the battery's specifications.
You may have noticed that the cycle count on my example system is not being reported. Unfortunately, I've found this to be the case on many systems I've investigated.
Battery Capacity History The Battery Capacity History section, shown in Figure G, displays the charge capacity history of the system's battery. This table lists both the full charge capacity and the design capacity, along with a usage period, thus providing you with a way to track the health of your battery over time.
For example, you can see that when I first started using this laptop in September 2013 with Windows 8, the full charge capacity was close to the design capacity—about a 3,000 mWh difference. This is pretty typical. My example Battery Report also shows that with regular use the first year, the full charge capacity steadily dropped during each measurement period. The difference ended up being a drop of 8,176 mWh.
After the second year, the full charge capacity continued to drop. The difference ended up being a drop of 3,670 mWh, as shown in Figure H. So over a two-year period, the full charge capacity dropped 11,846 mWh. Over the last several months the full charge capacity has leveled out.As they say, your mileage may vary—but chances are good that you'll see that your battery is no longer charging to its original full capacity.
Battery Life Estimates At the end of the report is the Battery Life Estimates section. It includes a table that indicates how long you can expect the battery to last at full charge capacity and at design capacity. These estimates are based on the observed drains. This too will provide you with a good indication of the health of your battery.
As you can see in Figure I, when I first started using this system, I could get about three and half hours of use on a full battery charge; today, I get only about two hours.Have you run the Battery Report on your Windows 10 system? Have you discovered a drop in the full charge capacity? What's your laptop's battery life estimate? Share your experiences in the discussion thread below.

If you bought a Dell XPS 13 in the past couple of months, you may not be getting all the endurance you're entitled to. However, a future BIOS update, which is due in mid-December, promises to improve the battery life by close to 25 percent on XPS 13 laptops with Intel 6th Generation Core (aka "Skylake") series processors.
We had a chance to install a beta copy of the update on a review unit, which increased its runtime from 9 hours and 37 minutes to 11 hours and 54 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery test (continuous surfing over Wi-Fi at 100 nits). That's a huge difference.
More importantly, Apple is opening up the search API so that third-party apps can be searched. A good example is that you’ll be able to search through your Evernote notes directly from the home screen.
Notes has largely remained unchanged, but Apple’s revamping the app for iOS 9. In addition to entering standard text, you can use the sketch button to add drawings and there’s a direct link to add photos (or take a new photo with the camera). Bullet points can be added, so you can make a simple checklist, such as for a shopping list. Notes is also available as a share option from any app, so you can quickly share a map and have it embedded in a doc, for example. It might only be simple changes, but it changes Notes from being a rather basic app into a much more powerful one. The only downside is that new Notes can only be shared via iCloud without other iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 El Capitan devices, so you'll want to upgrade all of your devices before you hit the Update button to move to the new system.
Ever since it debuted last January, the XPS 13 has been one of the top ultrabooks on the market and our top choice for best laptop overall because of its svelte design, strong endurance and nearly bezeless screen. This past fall, Dell released an updated version of the XPS 13 with the same award-winning design but with new Intel "Skylake" 6th Generation processors instead of the 5th Generation CPUs on the original. When we ran our battery test on the Skylake XPS 13, we were unpleasantly surprised to see that its battery life was over two hours less than its predecessor's, shrinking from 11:42 to 9:37.
After we shared our findings with Dell, the company told us that the difference in battery life was due to increased power consumption from the new model's NVME PCIe SSD (the old model used an M.2 SATA SSD). While PCIe SSDs are significantly faster than typical SATA drives, they also consume a little bit more power, but apparently the real problem was not the NVME's own use of electricity but its ability to prevent the CPU from entering a higher C-state. In other words, the SSD was telling the processor to remain at a higher power state.
The BIOS update fixes this problem and, as a result, the new XPS 13 actually lasted 12 minutes longer than its predecessor on our test.If the CPU model number begins with a 6 (ex: Core i5-6200U you have a Skylake processor, but if it begins with 5, you have an earlier-model XPS 13. The BIOS version also appears in this app. If you need the BIOS update, you'll be able to download an installer from Dell's product support page for the XPS 13 (9350). The version you need carries the number 1.17 or higher. As of this writing, the updated BIOS isn't available to the public, but Dell told us to expect a release sometime in mid-December. After the update, the XPS 13 takes its rightful place among the longest-lasting laptops on the market. The iPhone 6S is great, but its battery life was never its strong suit. I said that in my review, and I felt the same way about the iPhone 6, too. I pair multiple fitness bands and smartwatches, stream music and generally wear out my iPhone so that it always needs a top-off charge by 4 p.m.

Apple has danced around the battery limitations on the smaller 4.7-inch iPhone, adding a low-power mode in iOS 9 (which stretches battery life a bit) and pushing power-hungry users to the larger, more capacious 5.5-inch Plus phones -- whether or not they preferred its jumbo size. Third-party accessories have long addressed the battery issue, meanwhile, with everything from pocketable battery dongles to form-fitting battery cases.
If, on the other hand, you work with huge images in Photoshop, work with large spreadsheets or databases, then more RAM is a better investment than a faster processor. The good news is that every current Mac comes fitted as standard with a processor that's more than capable of handling almost everything most of us are likely to throw at it.The problem was flagged by German site PC Games Hardware, who found that heavier heatsinks could mess up users' CPU's, as well as motherboard sockets. This is apparently due to the thinner substrate used in the Skylake chips as opposed to their Broadwell counterparts, despite the fact that Intel claims they should be able to take the same weight.
