Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 Battery

Microsoft has proposed a slightly different approach to extending laptop and tablet battery life - make the devices themselves much smarter at using a broader range of power options. It's widely accepted that battery technology hasn't kept pace with processor and screen technology. It's why successive generations of laptops and mobile devices seem to be stuck with the same less-than-satisfactory levels of stamina.

While the biggest tech companies are spending big to discover superior battery technologies, Microsoft has proposed a slightly different approach.Rather than making the batteries better, why not make the computers better at utilising what we've already got?Microsoft's proposal, as outlined in a recent blog post, is to come up with a system that uses multiple kinds of existing battery technology, and to use smarter software to determine which ones were used and when.

"We think we can get you the benefits of the different types of batteries that have already been invented, rather than having to keep on waiting for the ultimate battery to be invented," says principal researcher Ranveer Chandra. The research project has assembled a number of working prototypes that contain multiple battery types, all of which are optimised for different tasks. The operating system will then recognise the task that's being executed, and will apply the most efficient battery for that task.

For example, the type and amount of power needed for writing a Word document is very different to what's needed for editing HD video footage, but modern systems don't make much of a distinction.

Related: Which phone has the best battery life?Microsoft also applies machine learning to figure out an individual's usage habits. It can then optimised battery usage accordingly.

So, for example, if a user routinely plugs their laptop into the mains at 2:45 and delivers a PowerPoint presentation at 3pm, the system will establish that a quickly charging battery should be utilised at around that time.

Naturally, while Microsoft is currently experimenting with laptops and tablets, it can also see the potential benefits for smartphones and even cars. All in all, it seems like a highly practical solution to a very modern problem.

There's a saying in laptop land: you can never be too skinny or have too much battery life. And Dell's clearly been listening to such wise words, as well as to the business travellers and corporate road warriors who make up a large chunk of the PC maker's market. Exhibit A is the revamped Dell XPS 13, which turned heads and won hearts upon its debut at the January 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. How to make this stunningly sleek but surprisingly powerful Windows ultrabook even more desirable? An October refresh sees the XPS 13 upgraded to the latest Intel 6th Gen Core processor along with options for more storage and memory (up to a 1TB solid state drive and 16GB of RAM, respectively), an SD Card slot and versatile USB Type-C / Thunderbolt 3 port. The 13 inch screen now sports a barely-there frame, in what Dell calls "a virtually borderless InfinityEdge display" with a standard Full HD 1080p panel and optional 3200x1800 touchscreen. Battery life is rated at up to 18 hours – yes, that's no typo – meaning that even with less aggressive power conservation measures the XPS 13 truly gets you into 'all day battery, leave the charger at home' territory. Starting price on the new Dell XPS 13 is $1,799. Dell's also cooked up another piece of travel-friendly kit in its $169 Power Companion battery.

It's a laptop version of those compact smartphone battery packs, designed to keep you working even when your laptop's fuel gauge finally hits 'Empty'. The compact Power Companion contains a 12,000mAh battery sufficient to give your Dell laptop up to an extra 7 hours of juice. It'll also top up smartphones, tablets or other USB devices through a pair of USB ports. Desperately trying to find a power outlet to charge your laptop in the middle of a meeting or presentation may soon be a thing of the past. Instead of waiting for the next breakthrough in battery technology, researchers at Microsoft are working on a way to improve battery stamina using existing technologies.

This means that a future in which your dead laptop battery could quickly charge up in time for your next meeting, or having a laptop maintain enough battery life to last you through a transAtlantic flight, may be ready sooner than you think.

To create this perfect battery, Microsoft is using a variety of different types of battery, machine learning and smart software.

Current battery technologies Battery advances have not kept pace with improvements in computing components, such as faster processors, higher resolution displays and faster wireless speeds.

Today, battery charging on a laptop is controlled by hardware rather than the operating system, which means that it is not as efficient. Hardware alone cannot determine, for example, how a user is using their laptop and in what context or setting to give the proper charge needed.

Microsoft researcher Ranveer Chandra points out that people use their devices for different tasks, each with different battery consumption needs. For example, viewing web pages and editing Word documents may have less battery impact than editing videos or performing complex data analysis.

Batteries in computing devices should address these different needs, Microsoft claims. Microsoft's goal is for the laptop to understand a user's immediate needs and provide a fast or more sustained charge.

Taking the software approach By moving the battery charging controller from hardware to the operating system, Microsoft is taking a machine learning approach, not unlike what Google-owned Nest is doing for connected homes. By learning when users perform certain computing activities, the OS will be better able to determine what kind of charge is needed.

In addition to controlling the charging from a software level, Microsoft is also using different types of batteries to optimize power delivery in the research prototypes. Because no single battery can deliver the requirements of fast charging, high capacity, low cost, less volume, light in weight, less heating, better longevity and high peak discharge rates, different batteries are combined to address these different requirements.
