Starting in January 2008, European customers will be able to buy Dell notebooks in a variety of DSGi stores, including PC World and Currys stores in the UK and online at Dixons.co.uk. Other DSGi stores including Electro World, PC City, and Elkjop will also carry Dell notebooks. The deal places Dell notebooks in stores in Norway, Greece, Spain, Finland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. Dell has been steadily expanding into the retail arena over the past few months, moving away from its direct business model it used for over 20 years.

Cnet editor Don Reisinger claims that the rumored Apple subnotebook that is supposed to be announced at Macworld is "dead in the water". He points out that subnotebooks are typically not beautiful devices and questions whether Apple would be able to design a better-looking one and sell it. He also points out that subnotebooks are usually very underpowered and good for only simple tasks; people buy Macs for an all-around solution to do everything on. Reisinger claims that if Apple releases the subnotebook, it will be the biggest mistake they could ever make.

There is no doubt AMD was in trouble this year. The company’s problems started with the ATI acquisition and late arrival of the HD 2000 series graphics cards. The company saw its graphics card market share drop from 23% at the end of 2006 to 19% in 3Q 2007. AMD’s new Barcelona and Phenom processors are already off to a bad start, plagued with bugs and delays. And finally, AMD’s chipset business was hurt by the company’s decision not to release any samples of its 7-series chipsets and its Spider platform for review before launch time, which gave some the impression that the company would fail to deliver again. CEO Hector Ruiz and members of the company’s management team finally admitted to the company’s failings in 2007 at the annual AMD analyst day on December 13 and apologized. AMD showed off their 2008 roadmap which seems to have a lot of potential.

Quanta Computer is expected to ship about 15,000 OLPC XO computers this December. Future monthly shipments of the notebooks are expected to be around 8,000 – 10,000. Component makers for the XO are expected to do well next year.

HTC first took the wraps off its first UMPC — the HTC Shift — back last spring, but this device still has not yet gone on sale. According to an announcement from the company though, this will soon change.This model has been expected "soon" for months now, and the last that was heard from HTC was that the Shift would launch in November. This didn’t happen, and now the company says this eagerly anticipated UMPC will debut in "Early 2008".

HTC didn’t get any more specific than that, but it’s likely hoping to be able to introduce the Shift at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January.Also new are bells-and-whistles aimed at making OS X more “iOS-like,” including spelling autocorrect; natural scrolling, application restore; and launchpad, a feature that makes all of your apps seem to fly to the screen through a simple “pinch” gesture.

All of Apple’s top software execs go back with Apple for many years, but Tribble — who led development of both the original Mac OS and its GUI — stretches back the farthest.

Jobs left Apple in 1986 after feuding with then-CEO John Sculley. He went on to found NeXT Computer with the help of Tribble, not returning until ten years later, when Apple bought NeXT. Tribble headed up NeXT’s software development.Tribble has also served stints at Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, and elsewhere, and he’s earned a medical degree. The updated 20-inch or 24 inch iMacs feature faster processors with 6MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus, up to 4GB of memory, five USB 2.0 ports (including two on keyboard) and Energy Star 4.0.For a while it seemed as if Apple was getting all lopsided with its desktop line—its 27-inch iMac lines were actually outperforming some of its highest end (not to mention significantly more expensive) Mac Pros. That’s all changed now, though.

As part of the spec increase, the Mac Pros now get up to 3.33GHz quad-core Xeon processor for just a couple of bucks…make that twelve hundred bucks. You can’t get that high-speed processor in the dual-CPU configuration, however, as eight-core configs hit the ceiling at just a little under: 2.93GHz. They’ve also finally added more storage capabilities, as you can now configure Mac Pros with up to 8TB of disk space in four 2TB drives. Expensive? Sure. Stylish and study? You bet.

Apple today announced a 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro w/ Retina Display. It’s predecessor, the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, remains as the epitome of a great notebook visual experience, providing an ungodly 2880 x 1800 resolution. Now Apple is looking to harness that same aesthetic beauty in a smaller, mobile package.

Now, with new and still not completely defined competition coming down the road from rivals ranging from Microsoft’s Windows 8 to Android 4.0 (“Ice Cream Sandwich”), Apple can’t really afford to rest on its earlier software laurels.

In moving Apple forward, those left behind will be building on traditions already set down — whether intentionally or not — by Jobs as their shared mentor of sorts. At the same time, they’ll be encountering new and unpredictable competitive challenges. How might they handle this tough balancing act, both individually and collectively?

In spite of all of Apple’s stellar successes over the past three decades, Jobs’ openness to taking risks contributed to some colossal flops on both the hardware and software fronts. After each misstep, though, Jobs strode on with his well known determination, often taking the best components — sofrware, hardware, or otherwise — from a failed project to build a better product.

To give one example, iCloud — first announced along with iOS 5 at the Apple Developers Conference in June — is a replacement for Apple’s earlier MobileMe, an ill-fated effort plagued with sync up problems and lost e-mails.
