As of this morning a total of 2,116 readers responded to our survey about the Apple iPad … and it looks like opinions are pretty evenly split. About 25 percent of respondents think the iPad will be a flop, 25 percent say it will easily attract a following, one third of our readers say it’s “nothing to write home about” while just over 15 percent think the iPad is “a sure hit.”
One thing is certain: The announcement of the iPad last week left a lot of consumers wanting to know more. Is it meant to be an ebook reader? Is it a portable web browser? Is it just a larger iPod Touch? Is it a mobile digital photo frame? Is it a fully functional slate tablet? The answer is simple: Yes. At least that is what Apple wants you to think. The marketing blitz over Apple’s new “media tablet” seems to be working as the iPad even made a surprise appearance at the Grammy awards thanks to Steven Colbert.
However, the buzz surrounding the iPad isn’t entirely positive if the discussion forums here at NotebookReview.com are any indication. Most of our forum members are concerned about the limited hardware and software on the iPad. Forum member MGS2392 summarized many complaints by saying: “The hardware isn’t too bad (just about netbook level), but the software is what holds it back. I really don’t see the need to run mobile apps on a bigger screen.”
Our audience seems pretty divided over the price of the iPad as well. Some people think the $499 starting price is reasonable for what you get while many others think $399 netbooks offer much more value for the money. Forum user Skyshade had this to say about the cost of the iPad: “All I can say is: Thanks, Apple. Somehow you made Sony VAIO X’s pricing sound reasonable.”
At the end of the day the jury is still out on Apple’s latest mobile device. The iPad offers consumers a great deal in terms of a mobile entertainment device, but we’ll have to see what software becomes available for the iPad before we know if this tablet offers any additional productivity compared to an iPhone.
Tonight, Apple sent out a notice to press outlets, announcing that it would be holding a press conference scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9am EDT. The topic? Recent decisions made by the top brass regarding what to do with the electronics manufacturer’s simply massive $100 billion war chest.
What are their plans? For now, only Apple CEO Tim Cook and a few other select higher ups can be certain. There seems to be little doubt that Cupertino will announce at least one or two acquisitions, negotiations for which are often conducted in secret so as to avoid giving away competitive advantages.
The other options, of course, would be to reward loyal shareholders. It seems unlikely that the company will distribute dividends at this point in the game, but a stock split wouldn’t be out of the question. Let us know what you think, or just wait until 9am, when they’ll let the rest of us know.Dell Laptop Battery & Adapter Online Shopping Mall - new-laptopbattery.com http://www.new-laptopbattery.com/dell.html
That’s Apple’s tagline for the iTunes U service, and it’s apt. Although some schools had made lectures and videos freely available through iTunes’ Podcast store, iTunes U was formally unveiled back in 2007 as a way for schools to manage free online distribution of audio and video lectures; in some cases, the courses include PDFs of handouts and assignments given to students in the actual classes. Originally, the content was limited to college or university level classes, but these days K-12 groups can also find things to use.
iTunes U is provided free of charge, both to the universities making classes available as well as to users downloading or streaming the content. iTunes U is widely viewed as a tipping point for free online education; it’s not the first portal for users looking to improve themselves, but it’s certainly become one of the biggest.
That point has never been more true than today, when Apple announced that iTunes U had served over a billion downloads to users, out of thousands of courses available. Its first year saw an OSU General Chemistry course enroll over 100,000 iTunes U students alone. Said OSU’s professor Dr. Matthew Stoltzfus, ?The interest my iTunes U course receives from non-college students is overwhelming. I?ve been working with high school teachers who use my iTunes U material to prepare to teach their own classes, high school students all over the world who are leveraging the course to tutor their fellow classmates, even retirees who download my iTunes U course to stay intellectually active.?
Apple says that over 60% of iTunes U app downloads come from areas outside of the U.S., which gives primarily U.S. schools a chance to show off to an international audience, as well as educate more people for less cost than ever before. The biggest numbers come from courses offered by Stanford and The Open University, each of which has garnered over sixty million downloads.
After the leak on Apple’s website last week that showed off a few Lion images and some all-new, Thunderbolt-equipped displays, it’s no real surprise that today’s product update included these dazzling new monitors. At 27-inches, and a resolution of 2560×1440, the panels inside of these displays might not have changed, but the tech to drive them surely has.
Apple Cinema Display with Thunderbolt
As the new Thunderbolt Displays come with Thunderbolt ports, it means that they can be attached to a single computer (like the new Thunderbolt-equipped Mac Mini) in a chain of up to six devices. Users will plug one monitor into the computer, then the next monitor, or hard drive array, or other high-speed peripheral, into the first monitor, and so on. Apple likes to say, “The fastest, most flexible I/O ever lets this display do things others simply can’t,” and for once, it’s not just hyperbole.
