The new Apple Time Capsule is relatively compact, measuring 7.7-inches on a side and just 1.4-inches tall. It weighs three and a half pounds. Each backup appliance can operate on both Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) and wired (three Gigabit Ethernet downstream ports) networks for moving data between computers.

In addition to the 2 or 3TB hard drive that sits inside the device, the Time Capsule has a single USB 2.0 port on the back that can be used to hook up an additional external hard drive or hard drive array (that presents itself as a single hard drive). It can also be used to make a printer available across the network.

Teardowns, however, have revealed bog standard Western Digital Caviar Green drives. They’re great drives and all; they’re simply not server-grade.While Apple has Sagan-like (Billions and billions) of dollars in the bank, they aren’t just sitting pretty. While Cook neglected to mention just what Apple is buying with it (“Not until we have to.”), he did say that on average, Apple buys a company every 70 days or so – but they’ve acquired a whopping 9 since October alone.

As one of the most visible targets in the electronics industry, Apple famously gets called out all the time, both for taking environmentally-friendly actions, and for the reverse. They’re serious about keeping green, however, and to prove it, CEO Tim Cook announced that they’d recently hired ex-EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to lead the way. What her title is, exactly, appears to be something of a mystery – but trust us, it’s about the environment.

During the interview on stage at D11, Kara Swisher remarked that while she uses iOS more often than Android, she doesn’t love it as much – and that has a great deal to do with how open Apple’s iOS is, or rather, how open it isn’t. Android manages to outcompete iOS in some areas in part because it grants developers greater latitude in hooking into the devices’ operating system. That may be changing later this year, as Cook said that we can expect Apple to get a bit more open, and give devs more room to tinker. That doesn’t mean you’ll be able to swap out the dialer for some tricked-out app from the App Store, but it might let you put your weather on the lockscreen.

Happily, the new box will cost just $99, the same as the current generation. There’s no word yet as to what’s inside, but we’ll update the post as soon as the technical specifications come online. Our guess? An A5, not an A5X or A6. Apple CEO Tim Cook said that orders for the new unit will start today, with, again, retail availability starting next week.

Unlike a theoretical Apple HDTV, however, a budget model from Westinghouse would lack basically any functionality whatsoever aside from the 4K panel itself.

Given that an Apple television still doesn’t exist, it’s difficult to suggest what sort of technology it might feature. The most suggestion is an always-on Siri digital assistant that would help users with more complex tasks, such as recording every new episode of a given television show. One possible outcome is a tight integration with its current Apple TV smart box; by upgrading the Apple TV yearly or every other year, Apple could milk a few more dollars out of a market that typically sees very slow turnover.

Upon using the laptop initially you are confronted with settings where you have to assert your desire to not have your information shared with companies. Afterwards you are bombarded with a collection of awful Lenovo programs, offering tools for jobs that a majority of customers would have no need for, and could be done with much better free programs. This is coupled with hardware scans that the laptop was very insistent I take, informing me not to touch the laptop for a ten minute scan, which it then told me was insufficient as I was connected to the internet.

Despite this one pre-installed program stood out, the One Key Optimizer, which I found to be a great and simple tool that offers brilliant cleaner tools to the common user. The laptop also includes student essentials such as Skype (Webcam is below average quality) and aforementioned Netflix, but is lacking any word processer.

It’s not a gaming laptop, it won’t be able to handle anything stressful, there are not tonnes of memory; but if you need a cheap laptop for university or a job, this one shouldn’t let you down.

Your newshound has heard rumours that Realsense adds about US$100 to the cost of a laptop. The key points KitGuru took away from the event were that Intel isn’t interested in talking about clock speeds or graphics capability but instead is focusing on power consumption and battery life. The flip side is that screens are moving from 1080p to 4K and more pixels requires more power. Panel quality is improving and the norm is either IPS or PLS technology with superb colours and wide viewing angles.Intel’s video decoder uses slightly more power than running at idle for video playback – the aim is to reduce power consumption until it is the same as idle. Clearly this refers to the Intel chip and excludes power for the screen.

Lenovo Yoga 900 is an example of laptop first. Last year this 2-in-1 convertible used Core M but now it has a 15W Core i7 in the same form factor while HP Spectre X2 is tablet first, weighs under a kilo and is powered by Core M. The Ultrabook term is well and truly deceased and it was interesting to see that Intel is far more discriminating about touch screen technology. A year or two back touch screen was essential. In this show case it was clear that tablets require a touch screen however conventional laptops such as the MSI GS60 gaming power house rely on mouse and keyboard. This makes perfect sense and is a welcome change in emphasis.

Most smartphones today pack huge, high-resolution screens, powerful processors and lots of memory to multitask and handle really complex tasks. This also unfortunately means that they struggle to handle a full day's worth of heavy usage, and so power banks are now a must-have accessory.
